Chapter 188 Encountering an Acquaintance Again
The young soldier who had come to report earlier saw Mu Qingyu silently following along, constantly watching the people not far away, so he kindly explained to Mu Qingyu, "Those big trucks and buses are for picking up passengers."
"Touting customers?" Mu Qingyu asked, puzzled.
"A bottle of water or half a bottle of mineral water's worth of gasoline is enough for a day's ride. Or a pack of instant noodles or a pack of biscuits, the price is negotiable. Where the convoy rests at night counts as a day. When we set off again the next day, we have to pay again," the young soldier explained earnestly.
"So, those who drive their own cars are capable people. Those who ride in trucks and buses are people who won't starve. The rest..." Mu Qingyu understood somewhat.
“Some people’s electric bikes still have power, and some people can keep up on bicycles… For those who walk, it’s all a matter of luck…” The young soldier was still quite downcast when he said this.
That's why they always put in extra effort whenever the captain ordered them to get out of the vehicle and kill zombies to clear the way.
If they stop, those who have lost their way will still have a chance to catch up. As long as they keep killing more zombies, the survivors behind them will have a greater chance of survival.
“We know the captain doesn’t want us to meddle in other people’s business for our own good, so that we can survive. We all know that. It’s just that sometimes… It’s just that sometimes the world is too cruel, and they can’t get over the moral hurdle in their hearts.”
Mu Qingyu didn't know how to comfort him, so she remained silent.
However, as Mu Qingyu walked, she suddenly stopped—among the people slowly disembarking on the bus, Mu Qingyu saw a familiar figure.
She ignored Gao Yingwei and the people stealing the rat meat. She quickly walked towards that familiar figure.
"Attorney Zhou?" Mu Qingyu called out to the gray-haired man who was helping his wife out of the car.
The other person hesitated for a moment before looking up at Mu Qingyu, and then exclaimed in surprise, "Xiaoyu?!"
What are you doing here?
How did you get here?
The two asked each other in unison.
No wonder Mu Qingyu was surprised. Attorney Zhou lived in downtown A city. Gao Yingwei, on the other hand, came from B city and was passing through on his way to C city.
Aside from the fact that this place is still under the jurisdiction of City A, there shouldn't be any entanglement between them.
"Aren't you at your home in City A? This is... Aunt Zhou?" Mu Qingyu noticed the woman that Lawyer Zhou was supporting.
"Ah, yes, this is your Aunt Zhou. We... well, it's a long story. We had to go to City B before the apocalypse broke out. Luckily we went, otherwise we would have survived." Lawyer Zhou said with emotion.
In fact, before the apocalypse, Mu Qingyu had given Lawyer Zhou a hint. She even had someone send Lawyer Zhou a batch of supplies, which included food and drink, as well as enough warm clothing to help them get through the coldest nights.
"When I called you before..."
"Oh, oh." Attorney Zhou nodded and smiled wryly. "Yes, you said on the phone that you had someone send me some things. Actually, I didn't tell you at that time because I was afraid you would worry. I was already on my way to City B with your Aunt Zhou."
“I didn’t tell you because it was raining heavily at the time, and I didn’t want you to worry. I had my neighbor sign for the things you delivered; he’s an old friend of mine. He called me later to tell me that you’d delivered a whole truckload of things…”
As Attorney Zhou spoke, he was filled with emotion.
So much time has passed that he almost forgot that Mu Qingyu had repeatedly reminded him that the weather was bad and he needed to stock up on some supplies.
Attorney Zhou did stockpile the supplies, but he didn't really take the matter seriously. At that time, like most people, he thought it was just an unusually heavy rain.
Once the rain stops and the sun shines, everything will be alright. He and his wife are not young anymore, and they have stockpiled too many supplies, which they cannot consume. They will all be wasted when the supplies expire.
As a result, just two days before the apocalypse, Attorney Zhou received news that his old friend in City B was critically ill. This old friend was not only his friend, but also his wife's older brother, his brother-in-law.
So the couple braved the torrential rain and drove themselves to City B overnight.
Later, Mu Qingyu called to say that she had sent him something, but at the time he was preoccupied with his old friend's illness and didn't pay much attention to it. He just thought that Mu Qingyu, as a junior, was sending him a gift to repay him for his usual care.
Later, his neighbor called and said that Mu Qingyu had delivered a carload of things. He was very surprised, but at that time his old friend's condition was relapsed, and he didn't have the mood to think about that matter too much.
Then came the apocalypse. He was only able to survive because he stayed at his old friend's house. After that, he had too many things to do and gradually forgot about Mu Qingyu.
It wasn't until they met that Attorney Zhou slowly began to recall the events of the past.
Mu Qingyu thought to herself that the things she sent to Attorney Zhou hadn't been of any help. But she wondered if Attorney Zhou's neighbor, who had received the items, had managed to save his family's lives thanks to them.
"Then how come you're here again?" Mu Qingyu asked. Lawyer Zhou and his wife are not young, it's quite a miracle that they've made it all the way here alive.
“It’s not just us, but also my old friend and his grandson,” said Attorney Zhou, adding that he has become accustomed to treating his old friend as a friend rather than a relative.
"Grandpa, did you run into someone you know?"
As Attorney Zhou was speaking, a young man who looked to be about eighteen or nineteen years old helped an elderly person get out of the car.
The old man's hair was white, but his body was not hunched over and he looked quite healthy. He wore glasses and remained refined and cultured even in the post-apocalyptic environment, like a highly educated intellectual.
After turning his head and agreeing, Attorney Zhou introduced to Mu Qingyu, "This is my old friend Fang Jingnian, and his grandson Fang Rushi."
Then he said to his old friend, "A-Nian, this is Jinxiu's granddaughter, Mu Qingyu. You can call her Xiaoyu."
Mu Qingyu knew that "Jinxiu" was the courtesy name of Old Master Mu. People of their generation would also have a courtesy name, and only very close old friends would call each other by their courtesy name.
Fang Jingnian was clearly not the kind of strict old scholar. After listening to Lawyer Zhou's introduction, he greeted Mu Qingyu with a smile and said, "Xiaoyu, is that right? Your grandfather and I were friends when we were young, but we haven't kept in touch much since. Why don't you be as close to him as you are to Awen?"
Mu Qingyu knew that the "Awen" he mentioned referred to Lawyer Zhou, whose real name was Zhou Ruiwen.
"Hello, Grandpa Fang. How are you feeling?" Mu Qingyu quickly asked.
