Chapter Twenty-Seven: Awakening of Superpowers
After settling Aunt Mei and the other two, Mu Qingyu and Mu Qingrong, siblings, finally braved the cold wind and returned to Building 3.
"Sis, the temperature seems to have dropped quite a bit again. Maybe by ten degrees or so?" Mu Qingrong said, grimacing as she closed the door. It was freezing.
It's only 12:30 a.m., and the temperature is already below -20 degrees Celsius? It's terrifying to even think about.
"Don't be afraid, we're fully equipped, we'll get through this safely," Mu Qingyu said, pulling Mu Qingrong upstairs.
"Let's move some more firewood upstairs," Mu Qingrong said. There was already almost half a room full of firewood on the first floor. Mu Qingyu had prepared it during the renovation, using the same excuse she used when filming a variety show, and had the renovation company help prepare it.
The timber on the first floor had been flooded, but the high temperature of the afternoon dried it up considerably. There was a similar stockpile in the neighboring Building 4.
So the two of them carried firewood for a while longer, but after two or three trips they were so cold they could barely walk. They gave up and retreated to the warm master bedroom.
Back in the master bedroom, Mu Qingyu didn't rest. After thinking for a while, she moved a lot of quilts from the next room (actually, her space) and together with Mu Qingrong, they pinned the quilts to the wall and then spread them all over the floor. The whole room was warm and cozy, and only then did the two of them stop.
At this moment, the master bedroom was completely filled with all sorts of things.
Just as the siblings finished everything and were about to lie down and rest, "snap!" the power went out!
However, the room was not plunged into darkness; the three battery-powered heaters were still working, and the firelight in the kang (a heated brick bed) was flickering.
Mu Qingyu lay on the bed, but Mu Qingrong insisted that she sleep on the bed while he went to sleep on the floor, saying that he was a boy and should take care of his older sister, and there was no reason for a girl to sleep on the floor.
The master bedroom was warm and cozy; the two of them even felt a little hot.
It's warm and makes me feel a little happy! In a daze, Mu Qingyu remembered her past life. How did she get through that extremely cold night in her past life?
She left the Mu family alone at that time, and she didn't take the bank card that Old Master Mu gave her. Perhaps she still wanted to prove herself.
With only two or three thousand yuan on her, she couldn't even afford the deposit for a house. So she returned to the house she used to rent—it was going to be demolished, and eighty or ninety percent of the residents had moved away, so the landlord hadn't asked her for the keys back when she left.
The area hasn't been demolished yet, so she can stay there temporarily. The bed and furniture are all things the tenants have used, and the landlord is too lazy to take them away.
In her previous life, Mu Qingyu faced the apocalypse in a cramped rented room. Two thin quilts, a few worn-out cotton-padded coats, and no heating...
The only advantage is that the surrounding area is full of uninhabited houses and unwanted old things.
When the temperature started dropping to below -10 degrees Celsius, Mu Qingyu found tools to break down her neighbor's door and brought everything flammable inside to burn. She searched for anything combustible with almost all her might; the fire was so big that it nearly set several houses ablaze—if those weren't resettlement houses, she probably would have frozen to death rather than have done that…
She endured the heat by frantically tending the fire until dawn, and then she fainted.
She must have developed a fever that night, but the urgency of survival kept her from letting her guard down until dawn, when she finally collapsed from exhaustion.
When she woke up again, the house had indeed burned through. Fortunately, the fire did not reach her, and she awakened her superpowers!
Although it was the most common type of strength mutation, Mu Qingyu survived until five years after the apocalypse thanks to this most basic ability...
"Sis, do you think the apocalypse is really coming?"
Mu Qingrong's anxious voice pulled Mu Qingyu back to reality from her memories.
Mu Qingrong chuckled upon hearing this, "Didn't you all set up apocalyptic mutual aid groups? Why don't you believe them now?"
"It's not that..." Mu Qingrong's voice was muffled, "It just feels so sudden..." He didn't know how to describe his current feelings.
Mu Qingyu could actually understand. It was one thing for people to talk about the apocalypse all the time, and young people were happy to take risks and try new things, so they made serious preparations for the "apocalypse." But in reality, deep down, they still didn't believe that the apocalypse would really come.
So when the end times truly arrived, they were completely bewildered.
Mu Qingyu did not try to comfort Mu Qingrong. No amount of comfort could compare to the facts. When man-eating zombies began roaming the streets tomorrow, she would have no choice but to accept it, no matter how much she resisted.
Neither the siblings were sleepy, so they chatted until 4 a.m. The weather had grown even colder; the temperature must have exceeded minus 100 degrees Celsius.
Even in Mu Qingyu and Mu Qingrong's room, with all the heating devices running at full power, the two still felt a chill.
By five in the morning, the room had become chilly.
"Sis, I suddenly feel so hot," Mu Qingrong said in a muffled voice, huddled in her sleeping bag.
Mu Qingyu also began to have the same feeling; she knew they all had fevers!
But it doesn't matter, this is the prelude to the awakening of superpowers. In her previous life, she and Mu Qingrong were both superpowered individuals, and the current situation is normal.
"It's okay, just bear with it. The temperature will start to rise around six or seven o'clock," Mu Qingyu replied, also huddled in her sleeping bag.
Just after Mu Qingyu finished speaking, she suddenly fainted, just like in her previous life.
Mu Qingyu was awakened by the heat.
When she opened her eyes, Mu Qingrong was rummaging through her sleeping bag, also covered in sweat.
"Sister, you're finally awake! I called you for ages and you didn't respond. You scared me to death!" Mu Qingrong breathed a sigh of relief.
Mu Qingyu crawled out of her sleeping bag. Mu Qingrong had already turned off all the heating in the room. Seeing that Mu Qingyu was awake, she hesitated whether to open the door and go out.
"Let's go out and check on the neighbors next door," Mu Qingyu said. There were three other people living next door, and she wondered how they were doing. The child named Xiao Mo had started having a fever last night, and judging from his appearance, it seemed like he was about to awaken his special abilities.
Mu Qingyu wasn't worried that Xiao Mo would mutate, because the zombies weren't people infected with the virus, but people who froze to death that night!
Of course, people who were already sick during the rainy season were more likely to freeze to death.
The actual zombie virus infection and water pollution began after the zombies appeared.
The siblings tidied themselves up and went out. When they opened the door, they found that the outside temperature had returned to normal; it was no longer icy cold, but rather had a chilly feel, like the approaching spring.
When Mu Qingrong's hand touched the metal door on the first floor, he felt a little dizzy.
"Sister, I feel like something's wrong with me..." Mu Qingrong said, touching her forehead.
Mu Qingyu knew what was going on and was just about to say something when—
"Help—help me—"
"It's eating people! The monster is eating people—Aaaaaah—"
Several sharp cries pierced the sky.
