Chapter Forty-Eight: Dividing the Spoils of War
The boy hesitated for a moment: "Can we stay?"
Mu Qingyu shrugged and said, "This village isn't mine. But I advise you not to do those things again." She wasn't qualified to persuade people to do good, nor was she anyone's life mentor, so her words were not advice but a warning.
If these kids team up with other adults who come here to resume their old ways, it won't be a good thing for Mu Qingyu.
"In short, as long as you don't threaten my safety, I won't interfere. You can choose from the supplies in the truck outside," Mu Qingyu said.
The boy moved his lips as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he said nothing. He handed the child in his arms to the girl beside him and then went out to the truck.
Mu Qingyu did not go out to supervise; he was free to choose for himself.
"Xiao Rong, go find Xiao Mo. It's safe here now. Have him come over. Also, you should thank him for saving your life," Mu Qingyu instructed Mu Qingrong.
"I understand, sister." Mu Qingrong nodded and quickly ran towards the place where Xiao Mo was hiding.
Mu Qingyu then went to finish off the remaining people, giving each of them a blow to the head. It wasn't that she was petty and worried they weren't completely dead, but rather to prevent them from mutating into zombies after death—damaging their brains would prevent them from mutating.
At the same time, Mu Qingyu had no interest in collecting the corpses of scumbags. After dealing with them, she left their bodies exposed where they died.
Mu Qingrong returned quickly, pushing Xiao Mo's wheelchair as he ran back: "Sister, come quick, Xiao Mo has fainted." His voice was full of anxiety.
When he found Xiao Mo's hiding place, Xiao Mo was already unconscious. He called out to him several times but couldn't wake him. He was worried that Xiao Mo had been attacked by zombies. However, Xiao Mo had no wounds, and there were no signs of zombie invasion in the room where he was hiding.
Therefore, Mu Qingrong could only hurriedly push Xiao Mo to find Mu Qingyu.
Mu Qingyu touched Xiao Mo's forehead, and after carefully checking Xiao Mo's condition, she breathed a sigh of relief and said, "It's alright, he just used up his superpower and is exhausted. He'll wake up once he recovers."
Mu Qingrong was relieved upon hearing this, but then felt a pang of guilt: "He wouldn't have done this to save me, would he...?"
"That's part of the reason." Mu Qingyu nodded, not denying it to lessen Mu Qingrong's guilt. "However, it seems to be a good thing for now."
"Good news?" Mu Qingrong asked, puzzled.
Mu Qingyu didn't explain further. The boy had returned after she went out to pick out things. He couldn't carry too many things, so she could only push the box he wanted out of the car.
"I've made my choices. I only took three boxes, one for each of us," the boy said calmly when he returned.
Mu Qingyu then went out to take a look. The boy had chosen a box of self-heating rice, a box of instant noodles, and a box of biscuits, all of which were food items. The biscuits were obviously prepared for the youngest child.
Clearly, these children are unaware that the water is no longer drinkable.
Mu Qingyu jumped out of the carriage and threw three more boxes of water out. After thinking for a moment, she remembered that she had once collected a warehouse full of maternity and baby products from Mu Xiangyuan. She picked out some that the children could use, and then pretended that she had found them in the carriage, and threw them out as well.
As for cleaning up, let those kids clean up themselves.
The boy watched silently as Mu Qingyu threw things away, tears glistening in his eyes.
Mu Qingyu didn't emphasize that the items were for them, and didn't even speak to the boy again. She simply greeted Mu Qingrong, telling him to keep a close eye on Xiao Mo and be aware of any zombies nearby.
Then she drove the truck herself straight to Building No. 3.
They were all in the same village, so it was a quick drive, only three to five minutes. Mu Qingyu then walked back in another car.
When Mu Qingyu returned, Xiao Mo had just woken up. He was still very tired, but his eyes were shining brightly.
Upon seeing Mu Qingyu, he couldn't wait to say, "My mental power can block other people's attacks!" Originally, he could only "observe," but now he can actually defend against them. What Mu Qingyu told him yesterday was indeed enlightening!
"Congratulations, you've found the right direction. Perhaps in the future, you'll even be able to research methods to attack others with mental power." She didn't say the last part aloud—"or even control people and zombies."
“Those people were wiped out; it was the result of our combined efforts. We were supposed to split those two truckloads of supplies equally—one for you and one for us.” Mu Qingyu paused slightly before continuing, “But you saved Xiao Rong, so to repay you, we’ll give you our truckload too. All the supplies we captured tonight are yours.”
"In addition, I took a portion of it and gave it to those three children. This portion is mine, and I can compensate you separately."
Xiao Mo shook his head upon hearing this: "You distributed the supplies incorrectly; it wasn't fair."
Mu Qingyu was taken aback, clearly not understanding what he meant. She felt that she had divided the money fairly, and she didn't know what he was dissatisfied with.
Xiao Mo calmly looked at Mu Qingyu and said, "Tonight, the three of us are working together. The supplies should be divided equally into three portions." As he spoke, he glanced at Mu Qingrong.
Clearly, he meant that Mu Qingrong should also have his own independent set of supplies, instead of having his and Mu Qingyu's combined.
Mu Qingyu was slightly taken aback and then glanced at Mu Qingrong. Indeed, her calculation was unfair to Mu Qingrong. He had also put in a lot of effort, and she had clearly not respected his contributions enough.
"I'm sorry, Xiao Rong, it was my oversight that I didn't consider this carefully," Mu Qingyu apologized sincerely.
Mu Qingrong waved his hand. He hadn't expected Xiao Mo to say that either. He and his sister were originally family, and if the distribution was done by family, his sister hadn't actually made a mistake.
"So I saved your brother, so you can give me his share. Keep yours for yourself," Xiao Mo continued.
"And the things you gave to those children, count them as mine, let's not count that part." Today is the first time we've worked together, and Xiao Mo doesn't want to take advantage of anyone.
Moreover, fair distribution is beneficial for everyone's future cooperation.
Since Xiao Mo had already said all that, Mu Qingyu naturally had no reason to object. She nodded and agreed to Xiao Mo's arrangement.
"Then," Xiao Mo didn't finish her sentence, "the house we live in now and the supplies inside were all given to us by you. I already owed you a share of supplies. Yesterday, your brother helped us reinforce the house, which is also something we owe you. So, your brother's share is still being returned to you."
