Chapter 153 Father and Daughter
Mu Qingyu carefully walked towards the staff break room, Tang Dao already in her hand.
Slowly push open the door. It's unlocked. The lounge has a window, and although it's dark, you can see everything inside clearly.
A gaunt man was lying on a resting bed, and a small girl was holding him tightly.
Both men were extremely nervous upon seeing Mu Qingyu. However, the gaunt man visibly relaxed upon discovering that Mu Qingyu was human.
He even felt a little surprised and looked at Mu Qingyu with hope.
Mu Qingyu frowned, not letting her guard down just because the other party didn't seem threatening: "Who... are you people?"
It's a bit strange that she's asking this, since she's the intruder, but who knows if these two are!
Hearing Mu Qingyu speak, the man was clearly very agitated, but he seemed very weak: "I...I'm the librarian here, my name is Shen Guang, this is my daughter Shen Zhuzhu. You...how did you get in?"
When he asked that, Mu Qingyu knew that the bolt on the library door must have been pulled by Shen Guang.
"We climbed over the wall. We came in to find some supplies," Mu Qingyu explained simply.
Shen Guang didn't seem to care about how Mu Qingyu came in. He licked his dry lips and asked, "Are there still many man-eating monsters outside now?" There was a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
Mu Qingyu nodded: "There are more zombies than before."
Shen Guang's eyes quickly darkened: "Has the government...not organized a rescue operation?"
Mu Qingyu shook her head: "Many people died in the extreme cold night, and the early zombies also ate many people. I'm afraid no one can organize a rescue."
Shen Guang's eyes darkened further. He had actually guessed it. He and his daughter had been hiding here for almost two months. The library was quiet, and no living person had ever come here. This woman, who was wrapped up tightly, was the first one they had ever met.
At night, he could hear the monster's roars from the fifth floor. He had been clinging to unrealistic hopes, but Mu Qingyu's confirmation completely extinguished all of Shen Guang's hopes.
"Then...outside, outside now..." He desperately wanted to ask something, but didn't know what to ask.
“There’s a sandstorm outside, zombies everywhere, and no water or electricity. The world is in chaos,” Mu Qingyu stated calmly, without approaching the father and daughter.
If she wasn't mistaken, the incredibly fast little figure she saw in the library earlier must have been that girl, Chen Zhuzhu. The child was very young, looking only five or six years old, but that speed indicated she was a superhuman.
Upon hearing this, Shen deflated like a punctured balloon, his body collapsing even further. He was already emaciated, but now he looked even thinner than a sheet of paper.
"Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, eat! Eating gives you strength!" Seeing her father's condition, the girl, Shen Zhuzhu, quickly took something out of her pocket and hurriedly stuffed it into Shen Guang's mouth.
It was a chocolate bar, a staple in the library staff lounge. Mu Qingyu had taken it downstairs before.
Shen Guang didn't refuse. He chewed and swallowed it. Seeing Mu Qingyu looking at the two of them, he explained after swallowing the chocolate, "I'm not like this because I'm starving."
As he spoke, he pointed to the corner of the bed, where there were still many packaged foods scattered around, all of which were originally from the lounge.
It seems they took the items from the downstairs lounge. They probably ate all the food there first, and then took things down floor by floor.
Shen Guang appears to have difficulty moving around, so the things must have been carried back by the little girl Shen Zhuzhu time and time again.
“On that extremely cold night, I was on night shift. There were no other adults in my family, and Zhuzhu always came with me when I was on night shift,” Shen Guang said.
He didn't explain in detail how he and his daughter survived the freezing night. But Mu Qingyu remembered that a shelf of books was missing from the library; they were probably burned for warmth.
"The next day, we were about to go home when we went downstairs and found that Lao Zheng and the others... had all turned into monsters. They pounced on us and tried to bite us..."
"We finally managed to escape them and get to the first floor, but when we opened the door, there were even more monsters outside. I had no choice but to lock the door and bring Zhuzhu back here again."
"I injured my waist and legs while trying to avoid Lao Zheng. After finally getting back here, I gradually became unable to move..." Shen Guang's face showed an extremely bitter smile.
Mu Qingyu guessed that the "Old Zheng" he mentioned was probably one of the zombies wandering downstairs. Shen Guang's injuries were probably not from being scratched or bitten by zombies, otherwise he wouldn't have survived until now.
Mu Qingyu carefully observed Shen Guang. Although he could still speak, his face was ashen. If it were before the apocalypse, he might have been able to be saved, but after the apocalypse, his condition was so critical that he was probably beyond saving.
Shen Guang seemed to see through Mu Qingyu's thoughts. He reached out and lifted the corner of the blanket covering his legs, and said with a wry smile, "I'm probably beyond saving. My legs are already rotten."
His leg and back injuries tormented him for almost two months. If it weren't for his reluctance to leave his daughter and his fear that no one would take care of her after his death, he might have died long ago.
In an effort to survive, he slowly took all the medicines, both edible and inedible, available in the staff room. However, his physical condition continued to deteriorate day by day.
These past few days, he'd had a feeling that his time was almost up. But his poor daughter was only six years old. What would happen to her once the food in the library ran out?
