Chapter Eleven: Building a Post-Apocalyptic Fortress
Mu Qingyu claimed to work for a television station and wanted to rent the house to film a variety show, similar to an escape room, and that the house might be renovated.
They first asked two families, and both refused. It wasn't until they asked a third family that the people there showed great interest in the variety show.
Mu Qingyu had no choice but to rely on her storytelling skills to fabricate a completely non-existent variety show. The owner of the third house finally agreed to lend it to Mu Qingyu. The owner didn't even want money; they just wanted a cameo appearance on the show. Mu Qingyu, naturally, politely declined, feeling both amused and exasperated.
Through the owner of the third house, Mu Qingyu contacted the owner of the fourth house. With the owner of the third house actively persuading her, the owner of the fourth house also agreed to lend the house, but rent and deposit would still be required.
Day 25 of the apocalypse countdown.
Mu Qingyu met with the owners of rooms 3 and 4 early in the morning to sign contracts and establish good relations. Houses in the suburbs aren't valuable; a single apartment costs only 2300 yuan a month, with a three-month lease and a one-month deposit. Both owners were decent people and didn't try to raise the price just because the property was being used for filming a variety show.
Mu Qingyu signed the contracts for both apartments for a few yuan. Apart from the third apartment owner asking her a few more questions about the variety show filming, everything went smoothly.
After leaving the small village, Mu Qingyu went to the goods trading center in the southern suburbs. When she saw Boss Zhao's wife again, she was even more enthusiastic.
This time, Mu Qingyu wanted some fresh meat and some agricultural products such as seeds. Most importantly, she hoped the proprietress could help her find a construction team.
"A friend is investing in a variety show themed around doomsday fortresses. He wants everything to be built like a real doomsday fortress, such as installing bulletproof glass and steel doors. I need an engineering team that can handle the construction and installation of these special materials."
Mu Qingyu has become quite adept at making up stories; she has even created the background of the entire variety show and which celebrities will be invited.
Boss Zhao was as enthusiastic as ever. Although she didn't have the goods Mu Qingyu wanted to buy this time, her relatives did! She happened to have relatives in the fresh meat business and friends in the aquatic products business. She didn't have any relatives or friends who sold fruit and vegetable seeds, but she was sure others would! Who wouldn't want to share in such a good deal—bringing a big client?
“I know quite a few construction teams. We business people deal with them all the time. But Xiaoyu’s requirements are special, so I’ll have to ask around some more. Don’t worry, I’ll definitely find you a reliable one,” the proprietress assured her, patting her chest.
Mu Qingyu's status with the landlady has evolved from "Miss Mu" to "little sister" and now to "Xiaoyu".
"Thank you so much, Sister Yan. I've been troubling you a lot lately."
"Don't be so polite. You've already called me 'sister,' so I'm like family. Come on, I'll take you to find Old Xie."
The owner's wife mentioned Lao Xie, who is one of the largest fresh meat wholesalers in the area. His stall is not in this trading market, but in an agricultural wholesale market more than ten kilometers away.
With the shop owner's help, Mu Qingyu successfully purchased a batch of frozen fresh meat. There was lamb, beef, pork, chicken, duck, and goose—all fresh, chilled meat that had just been slaughtered and frozen.
Frozen beef was 1 yuan per ton, and frozen offal was 7,000 yuan per ton; Mu Qingyu ordered 20 tons of each. Frozen mutton was 1 yuan per ton, and she ordered 10 tons. Pork was 9,000 yuan per ton, and she ordered 50 tons.
Frozen chicken, duck, and goose meat are quite cheap, costing 1700, 1800, and 2000 yuan per ton respectively. She ordered 100 tons of each; with this in the apocalypse, she could even keep a dog as a pet if she wanted.
As per usual practice, and with the boss also looking for a long-term partnership, he gave Mu Qingyu a 10% discount on the total price, which brought the total to 1,413,000.
Then the proprietress took her to a seafood wholesale center, where Mu Qingyu bought another batch of frozen fish, shrimp, squid, and the like. Mu Qingyu didn't need much of this, mainly because frozen seafood wouldn't taste good after the apocalypse; she just wanted a token amount to try something new. So she bought a little of everything, totaling only 500,000 yuan worth of goods.
With the proprietress leading the way, Mu Qingyu didn't even need to explain anything.
As usual, I paid a deposit of 300,000 yuan, and then waited for the goods to arrive before paying the rest.
Through the connection with Lao Xie mentioned by the landlady, Mu Qingyu found a seed wholesaler and a vegetable wholesaler, buying a portion of almost every type of fruit and vegetable seed they had, spending 68,000 yuan. She also bought one or two tons of various types of vegetables, but the total cost was only 172,000 yuan.
With too much debt, Mu Qingyu simply settled the "small amount" of ten or twenty thousand yuan and then had the goods delivered to Mu Xiangyuan.
Lu Peng and his men had long been adept at having people help Mu Qingyu open warehouses and receive goods.
These past few nights, Mu Qingyu has also taken advantage of the quiet of the night to go to the warehouse and sweep all the things that have been purchased and stored into her spatial storage.
After Mu Qingyu finished shopping, the construction team that the shop owner had helped her contact also got news.
Through the landlady's connections, they got in touch with a construction team. The team leader's surname was Wang, and everyone called him Brother Wang.
This Brother Wang has some connections with military industrial units and takes on special projects. For example, he does special renovations of chemical laboratories, renovations of classified units, and also undertakes special renovations for film crews and variety shows.
This person is shrewd in his work, but his prices are fair and he treats everyone honestly, young and old.
Mu Qingyu went to meet him that very night, and the two got along quite well. They then decided on the spot to entrust the house renovation to Brother Wang.
Over the next few days, Mu Qingyu devoted herself entirely to the renovation of houses number 3 and 4!
Mu Qingyu first reinforced the courtyard wall. She demolished the original wall, which was only for aesthetic purposes, and then built a high wall that was 3 meters high and 5 meters thick, with sharp steel needles 15 centimeters high installed on top of the wall.
Installing an electric grid is unnecessary. In the apocalypse, electromagnetic waves are disordered, global power suffers devastating damage, and humanity has almost lost the ability and right to use "electricity".
Villas 3 and 4 were decorated identically and remained separate from each other. However, Mu Qingyu still installed a small steel gate between the two courtyards to facilitate future access between the two houses.
The main gate to the courtyard has been reduced in size. It is still made into an iron gate, but it is only large enough for two people to pass side by side, and the steel bars of the gate have all been thickened and reinforced.
The construction of this wall made the two small villas look a bit like a small prison.
Secondly, the glass needs to be replaced. So, all the glass in the doors and windows, including the sunroom on the third floor, will be replaced with bulletproof glass.
