Chapter 92 Being Kept

Chapter 92 Being Kept

Jiang Ye was so angry he almost laughed.

After this incident, Bai Chenzhu was extremely wary of him. Every time he took a step closer, Bai Chenzhu would immediately step back, accompanied by a vigilant look.

"I told you we're a couple."

“I know.” Bai Chenzhu gestured. “So you just stand there, yes, stand there, at least two meters away from me. Don’t come any closer, thank you.”

He paused, then awkwardly reassured her, "Boyfriend."

Anyone who opens their eyes to find they have a partner who's always trying to be affectionate and kissy would feel uncomfortable.

Bai Chenzhu felt something was strange; everything was very strange. So he decided to keep the other party calm for the time being.

"Tsk." Jiang Ye was completely helpless against him. He circled around him twice and, seeing that the man was as impenetrable as a tortoise shell, had no choice but to adapt to the current situation.

"Now that you know he's my boyfriend, don't leave so easily. Don't worry, I won't do anything to you." Jiang Ye's eyes flickered. "While you were gone, I found myself a job."

"What kind of work?" Bai Chenzhu walked beside him and saw that the man was indeed different from before when he was serious, so she mustered up her courage and walked alongside him.

Jiang Ye felt like he was raising a cat; he needed a lot of patience to get Bai Chenzhu to approach him. He thought about it carefully, "It's a job that doesn't pay. Speaking of which, I still owe it to your recording."

He initially promoted exchanges between cities in order to find Bai Chenzhu as quickly as possible, but he didn't expect what would happen later... He glanced at Bai Chenzhu beside him and left it at that.

——

Jiang Ye led him into the Dawn Research Institute in a grand manner. The guards all nodded and saluted the two of them, clearly recognizing Jiang Ye.

Bai Chenzhu looked around, feeling even more uneasy, especially when he heard someone whispering "Commander" to Jiang Ye.

Commander? What's that?

Before he could figure anything out, Jiang Ye led him into a small hall, which was empty except for a few tables and chairs in the middle. There, Bai Chenzhu saw Zhou Mengmeng.

She was embracing a young woman and sitting with a middle-aged man; all three of them had red eyes.

"Sorry to disturb your reunion," Jiang Ye said apologetically, but there was no embarrassment on his face. "I have a patient here, and she's in a real hurry. You should know Sister Zhuohua."

"Xiao Bai!" The young woman recognized the newcomer and quickly walked over. She wore silver-rimmed glasses, had her hair tied in a ponytail, and was dressed in a white robe. She looked neat and refreshing, and her appearance was somewhat similar to Zhou Mengmeng's. Her eyes were red.

Seeing that she looked like she was about to pounce on him, Bai Chenzhu instinctively took a step back.

His actions startled Zhou Zhuohua, who stopped a few steps away from Bai Chenzhu. "What's wrong with you?"

“Look,” Jiang Ye turned his head to the side, carefully observing Bai Chenzhu’s actions, “He not only doesn’t recognize me, but he also seems not to recognize you.”

Bai Chenzhu frowned.

Jiang Ye said half-jokingly, "Don't be afraid, you know the Dawn Research Institute, right? We're just here for a simple check-up, we won't sell you for experiments."

"Where did you find him?" Zhou Zhuohua lowered her head and wiped her eyes. She had first seen her long-lost sister, and then she saw the missing Bai Chenzhu. Her emotions, which had gone up and down, were hard to control.

“He came back on his own. Someone notified me as soon as he appeared at the city gate. I don’t know as much about the details as your sister does.” Jiang Ye said, his gaze falling heavily on Zhou Mengmeng.

“Brother Bai isn’t seriously injured, he just doesn’t remember anything from before.” Zhou Mengmeng looked at her sister, then at Bai Chenzhu. Seeing that Bai Chenzhu seemed somewhat resistant, she couldn’t help but say, “Brother Bai, you can rest assured. Although Brother Jiang’s personality isn’t great, he’s not a bad person. I’ve watched him grow up since I was a child.”

No sooner had he finished speaking than Zhou Xuan slapped him on the head, not hard, but like a gentle reprimand.

Zhou Mengmeng narrowed her eyes and chuckled, "Okay, I got the last sentence backwards."

While everyone here was enjoying themselves, Bai Chenzhu felt like an outsider, an outsider who had been forced into the room and felt out of place. But everyone was looking at him, which made Bai Chenzhu feel both convinced and doubtful.

He glanced at Zhou Zhuohua, who was deeply moved, and remained silent.

The fact that they didn't immediately turn and run already shows their choice.

"I'd like to ask you to give him a full check-up. I'm worried he might have other injuries." Jiang Ye's gaze shifted from Zhou Mengmeng to Zhou Zhuohua's shoulder.

Zhou Zhuohua hurriedly said, "Of course! Mengmeng, you stay with Dad for a while, I have to leave for a bit. Xiaobai, come with me."

——

Bai Chenzhu followed her through several laboratories, which were all routine examinations he had seen in the hospital before. His furrowed brows relaxed, and he breathed a sigh of relief.

"Xiao Bai, how much do you still remember?" Zhou Zhuohua asked, examining the report closely.

Bai Chenzhu said, "I only remember that I was entertaining guests at a hotel when I suddenly fell from the building..."

What kind of social engagement?

"Work-related."

"Aren't you still in university?" Zhou Zhuohua put down the report, her expression inscrutable.

How could she be so sure I was in college? Bai Chenzhu realized something and quickly said, "I got it wrong, my memory is all over the place, I can't remember."

The wrinkles between Zhou Zhuohua's brows deepened.

Bai Chenzhu tentatively asked, "How do you know me?"

Zhou Zhuohua was completely unprepared. "Jiang Ye, if you know Jiang Ye, then I know you. If you don't remember Jiang Ye, then you don't remember anything from university either?"

Jiang Ye is related to 'my' university? Bai Chenzhu's eyes flickered slightly, "Apart from common sense, I don't remember anything else."

“This is a big problem.” Zhou Zhuohua looked distressed. “Wait a minute, I’ll go find my dad.”

Bai Chenzhu sat alone in the laboratory, looking around the cold and unfamiliar room. He watched as Zhou Zhuohua returned, bringing Jiang Ye with him.

"You only have minor injuries, nothing serious. However, there's some blood stasis in your brain that hasn't dissipated. We'll focus on conservative treatment, and you should rest in bed as much as possible. I'll prescribe some medication for you now; come back to see me after you've finished it. Also, since medications are limited right now, I recommend trying acupuncture and massage..."

Seemingly sensing Bai Chenzhu's unfamiliarity and wariness towards her, Zhou Zhuohua only inquired about the illness and gave instructions, without saying anything else. She always looked hesitant, as if she wanted to say more but was afraid of saying something wrong and being misunderstood by Bai Chenzhu.

Bai Chenzhu was feeling dizzy from listening, but Jiang Ye listened very attentively. He went to get the medicine and came back, gesturing with his chin at Bai Chenzhu. "Let's go, it's getting late, let's go back and rest."

Where to?

"This is where I live." Jiang Ye tossed the medicine in his hand, his expression nonchalant. "I'll have to make sure you take your medicine from now on."

Bai Chenzhu didn't say anything, but stood up and followed a step behind Jiang Ye. Jiang Ye reached out and grabbed his wrist without turning around. Bai Chenzhu jumped and reflexively shook him off, "What are you doing?!"

"Holding hands," Jiang Ye said matter-of-factly. "Have you forgotten you have a boyfriend?"

Bai Chenzhu took a step back.

"Okay, okay, fine, we won't hold hands then." Jiang Ye raised his hands in surrender and sighed heavily. "You were already thin, and now you're even thinner than before. Haven't you been eating properly?"

Casual conversation can easily lower a person's guard. Bai Chenzhu shook his head, "Where did the food come from?"

He ate fruit and foraged for food.

However, he and Zhou Mengmeng couldn't hunt many meaty wild animals. Bai Chenzhu didn't seem to mind; he hadn't had much of an appetite lately.

Jiang Ye looked at him with heartache, "You used to be either a fish or a chicken when you were with me, how come you live such a miserable life?"

Bai Chenzhu was too lazy to refute and simply turned his face away.

"Don't be so wary of me. I have something to tell you." Jiang Ye paused, looked around, and said, "Never mind, I'll tell you when we get back."

Bai Chenzhu's curiosity was piqued for once.

Jiang Ye led him into a small, empty villa. There were only a few chairs on the first floor. He openly and honestly took Bai Chenzhu back to his master bedroom and put the medicine down.

Before Bai Chenzhu could even suggest sleeping on the sofa, Jiang Ye dropped a bombshell, "When Sister Zhuohua was talking to you just now, you didn't think you were using someone else's identity or anything, did you?"

Although Bai Chenzhu didn't speak, his eyes clearly revealed his true feelings.

Jiang Ye smiled. "I know some of our little secrets, so I said you can trust me a little more."

If it weren't for this trip to the research institute, Jiang Ye wouldn't have remembered this at all.

He tilted his head, a slight smile playing on his pale lips. "There was indeed an original owner with the same name, but he was gone when you arrived. The one we've known from beginning to end is you; we've been working together since the early days of the apocalypse... Speaking of which, you've forgotten the book that led us to meet?"

He was so certain that Bai Chenzhu had no room for doubt. For example, did Jiang Ye really know him? How did Jiang Ye recognize him? Bai Chenzhu had many thoughts in his mind, but only a light question came to his lips: "What book?"

Jiang Ye asked, "Do you remember what kind of work you were doing at those social events?"

Bai Chenzhu fell into a long silence. He rubbed his throbbing forehead; he really couldn't remember. But because of Jiang Ye's words, he did feel that the man in front of him might be trustworthy.

"It's okay, you'll remember eventually." Jiang Ye was optimistic about this. "As long as you're still alive."

This time, he absolutely refused to let anyone leave first.

He thought everything was foolproof, so he sent Tang Zhao and Bai Chenzhu away first while he covered their retreat. Unexpectedly, the seemingly safe man led a large group of pursuers into danger, while he himself took the alien leader hostage and escaped with the spaceship…

God knows how his heart nearly jumped out of his chest when he found the wrecked car.

But he quickly realized that Bai Chenzhu might have jumped out of the car.

Jiang Ye swallowed hard, forcing back the excitement in his heart, in order to maintain a composed demeanor and not frighten the people who had just returned.

“I have two sets of blankets, and the bed is big, so we can sleep together.” Jiang Ye took another set of blankets out of the closet.

Bai Chenzhu asked politely but distantly, "May I sleep on the sofa?"

"No." Jiang Ye's expression immediately changed. "The doctor told you to rest in bed as much as possible. Have you forgotten? Bedtime!"

Bai Chenzhu pondered for a moment, glancing at Jiang Ye.

Jiang Ye countered, "Mr. Bai is kind-hearted and beautiful, he wouldn't be so willing to let the homeowner sleep on the sofa, right?"

Having actually thought this, Bai Chenzhu forced himself to answer, "Um...yes, I think so."

"Eat first, then take your medicine. Wait a minute, I'll go get dinner." Jiang Ye said, pushing open the door and leaving.

A short while later, Bai Chenzhu, who was standing by the bed staring blankly at the blanket, heard someone calling her name.

He pushed open the door and saw Jiang Ye had placed two meals on the table. Looking at the steaming food, Bai Chenzhu was momentarily bewildered.

Vegetables, rice, and meat?

Not only is the accommodation good, but the food is also this good? Bai Chenzhu had the illusion that he was being kept. After thinking about it deeply, he realized that he was indeed in a similar situation.

Is there anything I can do? Bai Chenzhu asked with a serious expression, lost in thought.

"Aren't you coming to eat?" Jiang Ye chuckled at the person's cautious manner. He sat on the chair with his arms crossed, pushed the chair back with his feet on the ground, and the front leg of the chair dangled in the air.

After waiting for a while, Bai Chenzhu came over.

"Sit down." Jiang Ye handed him the chopsticks, but instead of eating, he stared intently at Bai Chenzhu.

Bai Chenzhu hesitated, picked up a small mouthful of rice, chewed it carefully, and swallowed it after a long time. "Aren't you going to eat?"

"Eat up, I eat very fast, it won't delay anything. You eat first." Jiang Ye squeezed his wrist, and this time Bai Chenzhu didn't dodge.

Bai Chenzhu's frame is very standard, with a thin layer of muscle attached to the frame. The rolled-up sleeves reveal clearly defined, supple and strong arms.

He touched it, but it was all bone. Jiang Ye withdrew his hand, frowning deeply.

Bai Chenzhu ate very slowly and had little appetite. He said he was full after eating less than a third of the food, and his appetite was far below that of a normal adult male.

Jiang Ye raised an eyebrow, wanting to reach out and poke Bai Chenzhu's cheek, but remembering how Bai Chenzhu had dodged the whole way, he moved his finger and then withdrew it. He asked again and again, "Are you really full?"

"Um."

"You've taken very poor care of yourself." Jiang Ye sighed for the umpteenth time, took the leftover food from him, and ate it all, including his own portion.

As Bai Chenzhu watched him eat heartily, looking quite hungry, she felt a strange sense of familiarity.
