Chapter 423 Expanding Enrollment
In a makeshift house buried by wind and snow, a small flame burns in a brazier, where a thin young man and a little girl of about ten sit warming themselves.
The door was blocked tightly with various plastic bags, but a chill still seeped in. The flames in the brazier flickered precariously, as if they might go out at any moment.
"After waiting for so long, we can finally join the Dawn Base. We're finally going to have a good life."
A joyful smile spread across the young man's face.
The little girl next to him wasn't happy at all. She huddled her head in the layers of clothes wrapped around her body, looking sullen. "Brother, I heard it all. It seems like Dawn Base is going to be at war. The other side must be pretty powerful. They're recruiting a lot of ability users now, just for the war. People will die in war. I don't want to join Dawn Base anymore."
Who wouldn't want to join Dawn Base?
It's a place where spring lasts all year round; you don't have to suffer from the cold or go hungry. It's the only pure land in the world.
But if such good days require her brother to fight in battle, she no longer wants to go.
"Ji Chun, listen to me. I'm an ice-type ability user, a very powerful one. With the ability enhancement fluid, I can take down a whole group of enemies by myself, even in war. You can get the ability enhancement fluid for free by joining the Dawn Base. This is great news for me. Let's pack up and join the Dawn Base now."
Ji Qiu stood up and began tidying up the various broken and tattered items they had collected.
More than a year has passed since the apocalypse, and he and his sister have survived. Joining the Dawn Base is the best outcome for them now.
Even if war were to break out, he could die in peace knowing that his sister could live a peaceful life within the Dawn Base.
Moreover, this is his only chance to join the Dawn Base.
It was too difficult for him to collect crystal cores with his younger sister. He was worried about leaving her at home alone, but it wasn't safe to take her to kill zombies.
He used all the crystal cores he had to exchange for living supplies and food, so he rarely had the chance to drink the ability-enhancing liquid.
He himself didn't know when he would have the opportunity to join the Dawn Base, but he never expected that the opportunity would be presented to him like this.
Ji Chun was still being petulant. "I won't go. I don't want you to go to war. I can't live without you. It's enough for the two of us to survive. Don't do anything big."
Ji Qiu explained, "Once we get to Dawn Base, you'll be able to live a peaceful life, and I'll be able to drink the free ability-enhancing fluid. It's my choice to join Dawn Base, and I'm willing to go through any danger."
If war really breaks out, do you think any other base is safer than Dawn Base? What if other bases are also dangerous? Dawn Base is the strongest, so it's actually the safest.
Ji Chun was skeptical. "Really?"
"Really, hurry up and pack your things. Let's go. The sooner we go, the sooner we can enjoy ourselves. The weather is too cold right now. You're just a kid without any superpowers. It's just suffering for you."
Ji Chun stopped being stubborn and started packing her things along with them.
Actually, there's not much stuff, mostly warm blankets and clothes. These things aren't worth much inside the Dawn Base, but they're very valuable outside.
They all chose to carry them with them.
After the brother and sister finished packing, they came out of the house carrying large and small bags, and saw that there were already groups of people walking towards the Dawn Base.
Clearly, quite a few people want to take this opportunity to join the Dawn Base.
When the brother and sister arrived, there was already a long queue, and more people were constantly gathering there.
The two were at the very back of the line. The line was long, but it was moving forward quickly.
The surrounding area was filled with the sounds of discussion.
"Great! Once we enter the Dawn Base, we won't have to freeze anymore, and there will be good food and drinks. Finally, we can live the life that people are supposed to live."
"I'm just curious who we're going to fight. With this heavy snow, we can't go far at all. All the bases are just living peacefully. Who wants to fight?"
"That's right, the snow is several meters deep now, so people and cars can't go far. How can this war even start? We can't expect wind-type ability users to fly over and fight, can we? The more I think about this, the more something seems off."
"I can't even figure out who the enemy is right now. Dawn Base is on good terms with Seed Base and has business dealings with other major bases. It's impossible for them to start a large-scale war out of nowhere. Could it be foreigners? That's even more impossible. They can't possibly fight over this heavy snow."
"I suspect that the war is just a pretext, and the real reason is to test our loyalty. If someone is scared away by mere talk, they're definitely not loyal. This will filter them out."
"Yes, yes, your statement makes sense."
This was the topic of most discussion. Since no one had discovered who the enemy was, people felt that Dawn Base's statement was a test for them, and the atmosphere at the scene became much more relaxed.
Ji Chun tilted her head back. "Brother, is that how it is?"
Ji Qiu shook his head. "I don't know. Let's take it one step at a time. Even if we really go to war, we'll fight. Dawn Base is such a good place, it's worth defending."
When it was their turn, the process of entering the Dawn Base was very simple.
The only thing they did was have Ji Qiu release his superpowers to prove he was a superhuman, and then he went in to register his information.
Ji Chun has no special abilities, so he is managed and assigned tasks separately from Ji Qiu.
After that, Ji Qiu followed the team to the training camp, which was the unified residence and training place for people with superpowers.
It would be easier to manage people with superpowers if they lived together.
Afterwards, they were called downstairs to assemble, given a speech, and told some of the local rules.
The new superhumans were all filled with surprise, looking around in astonishment. They discovered that the Dawn Base looked completely different from what they saw from the outside.
This place feels like a completely normal new world. It's not cold at all, the sun is shining, the air smells of plants, and the farmland in the distance is thriving. Everywhere is full of life.
Lei Zhe handled it personally, dividing them into large and small teams for easier management.
After the teams were divided, each team of superhumans was managed by a team leader. Soon, someone brought over superhuman enhancement liquid, and each person was given two vials to drink on the spot.
The people with superpowers were immediately in an uproar.
"It's a power enhancement liquid! The power enhancement liquid worth 999 crystal cores was really given to us for free, and we even got two vials at a time."
"Dawn Base never fails to deliver on its promises. From now on, we won't have to risk our lives every day for a single dose of ability-enhancing fluid."
"After all this time, I feel that only Dawn Base treats us like human beings. I am willing to serve Dawn Base."
When they are outside, they fight zombies every day for food and to collect crystal cores. They also have to worry about theft and robbery. Even people with superpowers find it very difficult.
What's more, some of them are struggling with relatives, making it even more difficult for them.
Once inside the Dawn Base, they received free ability-enhancing fluids, food and lodging, and most importantly, their relatives were completely safe there, with food and drink to live a normal life.
For all of this, it was worth risking their lives for Dawn Base.
