Chapter 178 If you want to die, go die yourself.
Upstairs, Cao Yang led a group of armed soldiers, protecting the survivors behind them, and retreated up the stairs floor by floor.
He yelled, "All survivors, get to the rooftop first, hurry up!"
A large group of people were so frightened that they ran upstairs crying.
A blond man grabbed a woman's clothes for leverage and suddenly leaped up several steps.
The woman stumbled and tumbled down the stairs as he pulled her.
A terrified scream rang out, and Cao Yang turned around to see the woman falling rapidly.
He reacted quickly and grabbed the woman's body, preventing her from rolling into the horde of zombies below.
By the time the woman regained her balance, she was already deathly pale and her face was covered in tears.
"Li Huai, you're a fucking beast! You've caused us so much trouble, how dare you run away so fast?"
"Li Huai, if it weren't for you, we wouldn't be in this situation where we have to run for our lives. If we die here today, I will haunt you even as a ghost."
Everyone was absolutely furious with that blond guy; if looks could pierce, they would have torn him to pieces long ago.
The crowd ran upstairs while cursing.
Cao Yang led a dozen soldiers, retreating while firing their guns at the zombies surging up the stairs.
There were just too many zombies surging forward. Even if you shot and killed a batch, the zombies behind would just step over the ones in front and keep charging forward.
The zombies were very fast, so they could only run and shoot at the same time. If they were even slightly careless and slowed down, they would be caught by the zombies and their bodies would be devoured until nothing remained.
They ran desperately upwards, while the zombies, smelling their fresh flesh and blood, howled and chased after them.
Only by retreating to the rooftop as soon as possible and closing the iron gate there might be able to stop the pursuing horde of zombies and escape this calamity.
With a loud bang, the sound of a metal door colliding was heard.
The situation was not as they had imagined; not only were the zombies locked in the stairwell, but all of them were also trapped inside.
The blond-haired man running at the front leaned against the door, waving the keys in his hand at the crowd, a sinister smile curling at the corner of his mouth.
Everyone's breath caught in their throats and their hearts skipped a beat when they saw this.
They stared intently at the key in the blond man's hand; it was their only hope of escape.
He swallowed the curses and swears of the crowd and nervously offered them kind words of advice.
"Li Huai, calm down. Let's go to the rooftop first, and we can talk about other things there."
"Open the door quickly, or we'll all die here. No matter what happens, nothing is more important than staying alive."
"Enough people have died outside. We've survived with great difficulty; we can't die so easily. Open the door quickly."
The blond-haired man looked at their panicked expressions without saying a word, but his smile widened.
In full view of everyone, he threw the key into the gap in the stairs, where it clattered and fell to the first floor.
"ah!!!"
Some people followed the key with their eyes and climbed up the stairs to try and retrieve it, but the small key, carrying their hope of survival, was falling towards the first floor.
The zombies were still pushing their way up the stairs, and Cao Yang and his team wouldn't have enough bullets to last much longer.
Even under a hail of bullets, the horde of zombies continued to slowly close in.
Their original hope of surviving on the rooftop was now completely blocked, and they would soon become one of the rotting, foul-smelling zombies.
The woman who had just been dragged away by the blond-haired man finally broke down in fear of impending death.
She charged at the blond-haired man, yelling, "Are you crazy? If you want to die, go die by yourself. Why are you dragging us down with you? I've finally made it this far, I don't want to die. I'll fight you to the death!"
As the woman spoke, she swung her fist, ready to smash the blond-haired man.
Unexpectedly, the blond-haired man, who hadn't retaliated despite the insults, suddenly went berserk and shoved the woman hard against her chest.
The woman was no match for his strength and fell straight backward.
The person next to her tried to catch the woman, but only managed to grab her clothes. However, the momentum was too great, and the clothes slipped from their hands, causing the woman to tumble down the stairs.
The woman's body slammed heavily onto a soldier's calf. The soldier, who was diligently firing his gun to fight off the zombies, slipped from the impact and fell into the horde of zombies.
By the time Cao Yang and the others noticed and went to pull the person away, it was too late; the soldier and the woman had already rolled into the horde of zombies.
The impatient zombies, seeing the fresh humans delivered to them, immediately swarmed and devoured the two.
The sounds of teeth tearing flesh, the screams of men and women in agony, the grinding of teeth against bones, and the smacking of zombies chewing echoed in the narrow stairwell.
The zombies stopped climbing and swarmed to grab the flesh. Soon, the two were devoured, and the smell of blood filled the stairwell.
The crowd was so frightened by the scene that they fell to the ground, their faces pale and their bodies trembling uncontrollably.
The two people who were just alive a moment ago were now reduced to ashes in front of them. After being devoured by the zombies, their faces covered in blood, they stared at them greedily.
They wanted to devour their flesh and blood alive.
Some people cried out in fear, unable to bear watching what had just happened.
With red eyes, Cao Yang kept firing at the horde of zombies, trying to hold them off for as long as possible.
Only the blond-haired man stood by the door, laughing wildly, "Hahaha, good riddance, good riddance! You'll all be eaten by zombies, none of you will escape."
His current appearance is more terrifying than a zombie in everyone's eyes.
"Don't get agitated. Tell us what you're upset about. There's no need to kill yourself."
A man was trying to calm the blond-haired man down, quietly approaching him, intending to pull him open the door and force his way out.
But the blond-haired man was very vigilant and saw through his intentions. He pulled out a pistol from his pocket, his eyes bloodshot, and said, "Don't come any closer, or I'll shoot you dead."
With a gun pointed at him, the man dared not make any rash moves and could only take two steps back to keep his distance from the blond-haired man.
Behind them are hordes of zombies, and in front of them are reckless lunatics with guns. They might really die here today.
Everyone huddled in a corner, far away from the zombies and far away from the blond guy.
They watched helplessly as Cao Yang and his companions ran out of bullets and the zombies drew ever closer, huddling together to await their deaths.
They were unwilling to accept it; they didn't die at the hands of zombies, but at the hands of their own people.
Just then, the iron gate slammed shut again.
The iron gate, which was originally locked, was forcibly kicked open from the rooftop.
The blond-haired man guarding the iron gate was slammed against the wall by the huge impact, and two bright red streaks of blood instantly flowed from his nose.
Everyone looked over at the sound and saw the scorching sunlight shining obliquely from the doorway onto the stairs, casting a human silhouette in the shadow.
She was slender, wearing loose sportswear, with her hair tied in a ponytail, and huge wind wings on her back that were slowly dissipating.
At that moment, the people waiting to die seemed to see an angel coming to save them.
