Chapter 45: Blocking Arrows
Before he finished speaking!
“Swish, swish, swish—!”
A piercing shriek tore through the night sky! A dense stream of arrows, like a sudden, deathly rainstorm, descended from all directions, from the direction of those green pupils that lit up, accompanied by a shrill sound of wind, like an overwhelming force! The arrowheads flashed a poisonous, cold blue light in the darkness!
"Shields raised!" the leading guard roared. The only two leather-covered wooden shields were raised high. At the same time, the flashes of swords and sabers instantly danced into a curtain of light!
"Knock, knock, knock, knock!" The arrows hit the wooden shields and embedded themselves into the earth walls. Many of them penetrated through the gaps in the defense, causing a few groans and screams!
A personal guard of the Wen Mansion was shot in the shoulder, and the arrowhead pierced through his body. He staggered a step, gritted his teeth, and swung his sword to cut off the arrow shaft. The blood instantly dyed his clothes red.
"Puff!" A cunning poisonous arrow grazed Cui Junji's cheek and hit the thigh of a Cui family guard standing by the carriage behind him! The man screamed and fell to the ground, the blood flowing from the wound a strange purple-black color!
"Protect the prisoner!" Wen Youqing swung her sword to parry two poisonous arrows fired at the carriage, the blade and arrowhead colliding, sending sparks flying. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Cui Junji leaning over to check on the fallen follower. With swift movements, he tapped several acupuncture points on his leg to slow the spread of the poison.
"Ah——!" An extremely ferocious wolf howl sounded like an attack horn!
Dark figures flashed like ghosts from the gaps in the wall, above the collapsed earthen walls! They were wrapped in tight black night clothes, their faces covered with ferocious wolf-head masks, revealing only their cold, bloodthirsty eyes devoid of human emotion. In their hands, they wielded strange short knives that curved like fangs!
These "werewolfs" moved as swiftly as the wind, with the ferocity of wild beasts, fearlessly attacking with all their might! The flash of their blades brought about a bloody storm!
"Kill!" Wen Youqing's eyes flashed with a chilling murderous intent. With lightning speed, she positioned her crossbow on the wall and charged at a "werewolf" that pounced from the wall!
The "werewolf" scimitar came with a sharp sound and struck her face!
Wen Youqing did not dodge or evade, the arrow turned into a stunning streak, and it was shot later but arrived first, hitting the opponent's eyebrows with incredible precision.
"Swish!" The icy arrow precisely sliced through the opponent's wolf-head mask! The mask fell away, revealing a young, yet fierce, human face. Even more striking was the distinct mark just below his left ear, resembling a soaring eagle—the Xie family's unique mark!
"Xie Family?!" Wen Youqing's heart was pounding! The Wang family's poison, the Xie family's soldiers! These two Central Plains giants had actually joined forces! They were determined to bury Zhu Shisan, her, and Cui Junji in this desolate mountain! In the moment she was distracted, another "werewolf" pounced silently from the side, his scimitar going straight for her ribs! The angle was tricky, and the attack was extremely ruthless!
"wind!"
A low shout rang out beside him, and a dark figure swooped in like a ghost!
Wen Youqing couldn't see the "werewolf"'s face until he fell straight down.
With such amazing strength, Cui Junji still has a backup plan!
"Dang!" The sound of metal clashing! Cui Junji did not dare to slack off either. The feminine and clever power contained in the knife burst out instantly, and he actually knocked away the powerful scimitars of those "werewolfs".
"Crack!" With a tooth-grinding sound of bone cracking, the "werewolf"'s wrist bent at a strange angle, and the scimitar flew out of his hand! He let out a howl that was not human.
Cui Junji's eyes were cold, his steps were like a butterfly flying through flowers, he got close to the other person in an instant, and slammed his shoulder into the other person's chest!
"Bang!" The "werewolf" flew backwards as if hit by a huge hammer, blood spurting from his mouth, and hit the earth wall heavily, collapsing like mud.
The situation reversed instantly, and the secret guards and Cui Junji's guards chopped down two layers of werewolves.
"Behind!" Cui Junji's hurried voice with a slight gasp woke her up.
Wen Youqing spun around abruptly, firing a barrage of arrows and crossbows at the "werewolf" that lunged at him again! Swords clashed, sparks flew! Back to back, the two men formed a brief but solid fulcrum on the chaotic and bloody battlefield.
"Go to the carriage!" Cui Junji shouted, and the long sword in his hand danced out a shadow, forcing back the two enemies.
Wen Youqing understood, and the two of them fought and retreated, moving closer to the carriage, which was being fiercely guarded by the guards. The courtyard of the post station had become a Shura slaughterhouse.
Swords flashed, flesh and blood flew everywhere. Screams, the clash of blades, and the deep roars of werewolves mixed together. Several more bodies were found on the ground, some in black, some belonging to guards. The stench of blood was too strong to dissipate.
"Ugh... uh uh..." Zhu Shisan, who had been curled up and trembling in the carriage, suddenly let out a painful and strange groan. His body convulsed violently, his face turning a terrifying purple at a visible speed, his eyeballs bulging, and a large amount of foamy black blood gushed out of his mouth and nose!
He struggled to raise his head, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Wen Youqing and Cui Junji, his eyes filled with extreme pain and a strange, dying madness, "Save me."
"Poison... the poison has taken effect!" Wen Youqing said in horror, "No!" She rushed forward and was about to check.
No, Wen Youqing immediately shot an arrow under the carriage. After a wail, it turned out to be the old postman hiding under the carriage! He was also from the Wang and Xie families!
"Ugh... Ho-ho..." Zhu Shisan's convulsions intensified, black blood gushing out. His life force was like a candle in the wind, rapidly extinguished. He used up his last bit of strength, his blood-stained fingers clawing at the carriage wall, a broken sound emanating from his throat. "I... have done my utmost loyalty... Why doesn't the prince believe me?" His head slumped forward, his body completely limp. Only his bulging eyes remained wide open, staring intently at the moon.
Those two words struck Wen Youqing and Cui Junji like thunderbolts, their hearts pounding with shock. Their movements froze for a moment, their bodies trembling with fear! Behind Wang Xie's private mining operation stood the crown prince?!
"Roar!" A "werewolf" seized this momentary flaw and pounced on the terrified Wen Youqing like a real wolf! The scimitar, with a fishy smell, slashed straight at the back of her neck! The faint blue light on the blade was particularly dazzling in the dim light!
"Be careful!" Cui Junji's eyes were bloodshot! He was still half a step away from Wen Youqing, and Feng was already unable to rescue him! At the critical moment, he relied entirely on instinct and suddenly threw the long sword in his left hand. At the same time, his body exploded at astonishing speed and rushed towards Wen Youqing!
“Puff!”
The long sword pierced the shoulder of the "werewolf" with a shrill scream! The force was so great that it penetrated directly! The "werewolf" let out a miserable howl, and the scimitar's trajectory deviated.
But Cui Junji's body rushed over and just blocked the deflected blade and Wen Youqing!
“Sizzle!”
The harsh sound of a sharp blade cutting through cloth and flesh reached Wen Youqing's ears extremely clearly in the chaotic battlefield!
The warm liquid, with a strong smell of blood, instantly splashed on Wen Youqing's neck and cheeks!
Wen Youqing's body suddenly stiffened! Time seemed to freeze at that moment. She turned abruptly, and what came into view was Cui Junji's suddenly pale face and the hideous wound on his left arm, deep enough to see the bone! Blood gushed out like a fountain, instantly staining his moon-white robe red, and it continued to expand and spread rapidly! The glaring crimson, under the dim, flickering light, was a terrifying red!
Cui Junji groaned, his body swayed, and he almost couldn't stand steadily, but he still forced himself to stand in front of her. He picked up the long sword in his right hand again and pointed it forward, his eyes as sharp as a wounded lone wolf.
Before she recovered from the shock of the dead witness, Wen Youqing looked at the gushing blood, looked at Cui Junji's face that instantly lost its color, looked at his back that was still straight and standing in front of her... An unprecedented and extremely complex emotion, like volcanic magma, suddenly broke through all her coldness, rejection and disgust!
"Cui..." Her voice was very dry, but her hands were quick. She fed Cui Junji the only three detoxification pills she had, then pulled down the hem of her skirt and used it to strangle Cui Junji's arm proximal end.
Cui Junji was panting rapidly, his voice hoarse from the pain, but with unquestionable determination, "Zhu Shisan is dead! We can't stay here! Rush out under the cover of the wind! To the southwest... three miles... there is an abandoned mountain temple... easy to defend but difficult to attack... hurry!" With every word he spoke, the wound on his shoulder twitched violently, and blood gushed out.
Wen Youqing snapped back to his senses! The overwhelming wave of power brought on by the word "Crown Prince" was temporarily suppressed. Now the only option was to fight for survival! Even if it broke through on its own, it wouldn't survive until tomorrow. Cui Junji was its winning chip.
"Wen Mansion's personal guards! Cover the rear! The rest of you, protect Lord Cui! Break out to the southwest!" Her orders were decisive, carrying with them the iron-blooded murderous spirit honed on the battlefield!
She grasped the shaky Cui Junji, and where she touched was a warm, sticky wetness—his blood! Her heart twitched, and an unfamiliar, sharp pain came over her. She suppressed it, and her eyes instantly turned as cold as polar ice.
The remaining guards, with a final burst of bloody courage, followed closely behind, piercing the dark encirclement like red-hot knives! The cold gleam of swords and the dark blue scimitars of the black-clad "werewolf" clashed wildly in the night, each collision sending up a trail of sparks and splattering blood! The screams were incessant.
I don't know when the cold rain started to fall, and soon it became a continuous rain. The cold rain washed away the blood stains on the ground, but it could not wash away the thick smell of blood and murderous intent in the air.
