16. Something to do with youth

16. Something to do with youth

After military training, real high school life began.

While others have been fully prepared for the college entrance exam three years later, Xu Wenqiang is still doing the same as she did in Qingshi Junior High School: listening to lectures in class, completing homework after class, and doing the same things as she should in the rest of the time. There is not much change.

Lin Tong said, "Xu Wenqiang, why are you so lazy and lacking energy?"

Xu Wenqiang said, "I have always been like this."

"But you are a high school student now, and you should act like a high school student," said Lin Tong.

"You are a kind of high school student, I am a kind of high school student, we are not of the same kind," said Xu Wenqiang.

Lin Tong was angry.

After the military training, Xu Wenqiang and Lin Tong became closer and looked no different from ordinary classmates.

A week into the semester, on Friday, the last class, Fu Dongqing held a class meeting. The main purpose was to announce the names of the class committee members and the class representatives for each subject. This was an announcement, not an election, because it was just the beginning of the school year and everyone was unfamiliar with each other, so an election would be pointless. Fu Dongqing arranged the class committee members based on the class rankings based on their high school entrance exam scores: class monitor Xiao Cheng, study committee member Xu Zhenhua, physical education committee member Gao Zhe, publicity committee member Wu Ruixue...

Only at the end did Xu Wenqiang hear the name of the health committee member, Su Xiaoshan. Before this, Su Xiaoshan had always been the class monitor.

Xu Wenqiang twisted her neck and looked back at Su Xiaoshan, but her sight was blocked by the piles of books on the table, and she did not see Su Xiaoshan.

As for the subject representatives, each class committee member took charge of a subject.

"We'll hold another election in a month." Fu Dongqing finished the class meeting and tapped the blackboard. "We still have a little time. Let's review the key points of the last physics lesson. Everyone, take out your textbooks."

While flipping through the pages of a book, Lin Tong handed Xu Wenqiang a note.

Xu Wenqiang opened: There is no Xiao Cheng and mathematics.

Xu Wenqiang replied: It’s only a matter of time.

The cafeteria at Qingshi No. 1 Middle School faces east, with an outdoor basketball court in front. During dinner time and before evening study, it's packed with people—people playing, watching, eating, just passing through—making it the busiest spot in the school. The north side of the first-year teaching building faces this basketball court, so the boys often rush to it with their basketballs in hand as soon as class is over.

During the meal, Xu Wenqiang sat opposite Su Xiaoshan.

Su Xiaoshan looked up at her and asked, "Are you alone?"

Xu Wenqiang glanced at him and said, "Aren't you alone too?"

"Where's your deskmate?"

"She's having dinner with her old friends."

"The military training was all in vain?"

"Who said Bai Gang? We are table mates, not friends. Only friends eat together."

The two people who were eating together paused with their chopsticks and did not continue the topic.

Halfway through the meal, Su Xiaoshan looked up at Xu Wenqiang, who was picking carrots out of the plate.

"They are all saying that the math teacher said she wants you to be her class representative," said Su Xiaoshan.

"This is true, but Fu Dongqing disagrees." After picking the carrots, Xu Wenqiang looked at Su Xiaoshan's plate and said, "Su Xiaoshan, give me some of the fried pork tenderloin."

"It's all yours."

"Generous."

After Xu Wenqiang had distributed all the fried pork tenderloin, Su Xiaoshan asked, "Do you want to be the class representative?"

"Of course I don't want to be one." Xu Wenqiang answered directly. She had nothing to hide in front of Su Xiaoshan. "Although this is a good thing, and I like Wang Rui very much. But, this is not going to happen."

The fried pork tenderloin in Xu Wenqiang's mouth was hard and dry. She glanced at Su Xiaoshan. No wonder he was so generous.

"Forget it if I can't be one." Su Xiaoshan put down his chopsticks. The food in this restaurant was really hard to describe.

Xu Wenqiang puffed out her cheeks while chewing the meat and said, "Well, if you can't be one, forget it. The same goes for your squad leader."

"I understand. I'll be the one next time." Su Xiaoshan said. He knew that Xu Wenqiang came to him for dinner just to say this last sentence.

Xu Wenqiang hadn't swallowed the meat in her mouth yet and couldn't speak, so she gave Su Xiaoshan a thumbs up.

"Take your time eating, I'm going back." After saying this, Su Xiaoshan took the plate and left.

Looking at the nearly half-eaten meal on Su Xiaoshan's plate, Xu Wenqiang decided that she would finish the remaining fried pork tenderloin no matter what. In her family, simply preparing a meal was considered a good deed. She thought of Xu Yanmei; she probably hadn't eaten yet.

After dinner, Xu Wenqiang looked around but didn't see Chen Yang. It had been a week since school started, and Chen Yang hadn't shown up, which made Xu Wenqiang feel uneasy.

As soon as I walked out of the restaurant, I heard a lot of cheers coming from the basketball court.

Xu Wenqiang glanced at the cheering crowd and saw Xiao Cheng take the ball from Gao Zhe, rush to the basket in a few steps, make a fake move, shake off the defender, and then jump shot to score.

"nice shot!"

“So cool!”

......

Under the setting sun, in the orange sunlight, on the boiling basketball court, the boy playing basketball has his hair wet with sweat, and the girl watching the game has shy eyes...

Even if she had no more feelings, Xu Wenqiang's heart would still beat faster in this situation. This is the greatest power of youth, and no one can escape its embrace.

After being hugged, Xu Wenqiang felt a little lost, but also satisfied. She felt that she had had some connection with youth. She was about to leave when she heard someone calling her name.

"Xu Wenqiang, wait a moment."

It seems to be Xiao Cheng.

Xu Wenqiang walked away.

In this situation, if she was stopped by the dazzling Xiao Cheng, and then had a few words with him beside the basketball court in public, and then became an ambiguous couple in the eyes of others...

No matter how unromantic Xu Wenqiang was, she knew this was a touching scene depicted in many campus novels. This was also a great opportunity to embrace youth. But this time, Xu Wenqiang didn't intend to pay attention to the throbbing in her heart. She decided to escape immediately.

She always remembered the day before school started, when she sat on the ground at the farmers' market. Xiao Cheng, disgusted by the dirt, was even reluctant to reach out and help her. So Xiao Cheng, despite his radiance, wasn't always easy to get along with. Xu Wenqiang feared that he would be engulfed by her radiance and then hurt.

"Xu Wenqiang, be careful—"

A basketball, wrapped in a strong wind, rushed towards Xu Wenqiang's face, and Xu Wenqiang only had time to close her eyes.

But the expected blow did not happen. Xu Wenqiang opened her eyes. Before her stood a man much taller than her. The setting sun cast a golden edge along his figure with its afterglow.

"Are you okay?" The person in front of him turned around with a basketball in his hand.

"Xiao Cheng, Xu Wenqiang, are you okay?" Gao Zhe ran over.

"We're all fine." Xiao Cheng said.

"Thank you, Xiao Cheng." Xu Wenqiang looked at Xiao Cheng in front of her and stretched out her hand, "Give me the ball."

"What are you going to do?" Xiao Cheng patted the basketball on the ground a few times and did not give the ball to Xu Wenqiang.

Xu Wenqiang said: "What I can do is, of course, return the basketball."

Xiao Cheng approached Xu Wenqiang with the ball, leaned over and whispered in her ear, "This is Qingshi No. 1 Middle School, not Qingshi Junior High School, nor your farmers' market."

"I know." Xu Wenqiang said, reaching out and patting the basketball from below, and the ball jumped out of Xiao Cheng's hand.

Xiao Cheng was caught off guard, and Xu Wenqiang took the opportunity to grab the ball.

Xiao Cheng's eyebrows twitched. She actually stole the ball from him. Gao Zhe was also stunned watching from the side.

"Don't worry, I know what to do." Xu Wenqiang said.

Then she turned to the onlookers and said, "Chen Yang, your ball is here, don't you want to come and get it?"

"Oops, sorry, my hand slipped." Chen Yang lazily walked out of the crowd.

"It's okay, it's no big deal." Xu Wenqiang casually tossed the basketball in his hand.

"Since you're fine, give the ball back to me." Chen Yang stretched out his hand and stared at Xu Wenqiang warily.

Xu Wenqiang glanced at him, raised her arm and threw the ball into a basket next to her, and the ball went in.

A low cry erupted from all around.

Xu Wenqiang clapped her hands and looked at Chen Yang, "You should shoot the basketball into the basket. If you slip, go home and practice."

Chen Yang's face turned red and white, and he walked towards Xu Wenqiang. Xu Wenqiang was not afraid of him at all. Just as she was about to meet him, Xiao Cheng blocked her behind her.

"Classmates, evening self-study is about to begin. Let's practice our basketball skills next time." Xiao Cheng said with a smile.

"Don't meddle in other people's business." Chen Yang pushed Xiao Cheng, but Xiao Cheng didn't move.

Gao Zhe saw why they were fighting again and came forward: "Classmate, let's play basketball another day."

Chen Yang was still unwilling to give up, but he heard people around him start whispering:

"Do those look like Xu Wenqiang and Chen Yang from Qingshi Junior High School?"

“Are they all coming to No. 1 Middle School?”

"Is it so easy to get into No. 1 Middle School now?"

"You're here to fight, fire you immediately!"

"But they sang together during military training."
