23. Do you smell a fishy smell?
After math class, Wang Rui said, "Xu Wenqiang, come with me."
When Xu Wenqiang walked out of the classroom, she felt a chill passing over her neck.
As soon as they left the classroom, Wang Rui put her arm around Xu Wenqiang's neck like a good friend: "How was your weekend?"
"I'm quite happy." said Xu Wenqiang.
"Really?" Wang Rui was unhappy when she heard that and let go of Xu Wenqiang. "I was so worried about this weekend, I was thinking about how to quickly improve your grades in the next two months."
Xu Wenqiang smiled guiltily: "Teacher Wang, you should have a good rest on the weekend."
"I'm not in the mood to rest," Wang Rui said with a melancholy look on her face. "Since I chose you to be my class representative, then you must always be my class representative. There's no reason to change you midway."
Xu Wenqiang was deeply shaken by Wang Rui's words, nearly tempted to keep her position as class representative. But she held on, undeterred by Wang Rui's boasts. After all, she had been a student for so many years, and she still deeply hated studying and had a deep understanding of it. To achieve this, she would have to summon the determination and perseverance of a mortal cultivating immortality. But for now, she still found the mortal world quite pleasant and had no desire to attain immortality.
Wang Rui has already started the work of helping people become immortals. She instructed Xu Wenqiang on the study methods of various subjects.
"For physics and chemistry, listen carefully in class, keep up with the teacher's pace, and do more exercises, especially typical ones."
"For English, learn grammar and tenses in class, memorize words after class to expand your vocabulary, and do reading comprehension exercises when you have free time."
"Just follow me on this math, I won't say much."
“This language—”
Wang Rui was stuck.
Xu Wenqiang looked at Wang Rui's distressed expression and said with deep understanding: "Teacher, learning Chinese is too abstract. I understand."
Wang Rui once again embraced Xu Wenqiang in a friendly manner and laughed, "As expected, you are destined to be my math class representative. You understand me so well! Let me tell you, when I was in school, I couldn't learn Chinese well no matter how hard I tried. I only scored over 90 points in the Chinese exam..."
Wang Rui's smile was so dazzling that Xu Wenqiang looked away. She hoped that she would still have that smile in two months.
While Xu Wenqiang and Wang Rui were hanging out in the corridor outside the classroom, there was constant discussion in the classroom.
Gao Zhe was playing with a basketball in the back of the classroom, stopping from time to time to look at Wu Ruixue sitting in his seat, and Dai Ze standing next to Xiao Cheng. Although Gao Zhe didn't want to admit it, he was actually looking at Dai Ze.
Dai Ze was a man, but he was thin and his skin was even whiter than Wu Ruixue's. He had no flesh on his face, high cheekbones, thick, protruding lips, and a sharp, sarcastic expression.
Dai Ze also graduated from Lixin Middle School, and Gao Zhe had heard of him long ago. In his third year of junior high, two girls in his class had one change classes and the other transfer to another school because he overheard them making fun of his appearance behind his back.
Gao Zhe always tried to avoid such powerful people if possible, and run away if he couldn't. But Xiao Cheng was much more calm. When Dai Ze spoke, he smiled appreciatively, looked at him intently, and nodded in agreement from time to time.
Gao Zhe looked at Xiao Cheng and stuck out his tongue: "He's not afraid of having nightmares at night after looking at that face."
Wu Ruixue and Dai Ze came to discuss the publicity board project with Xiao Cheng. Qingshi No. 1 Middle School had erected several publicity boards along the main road. Each first-year class was responsible for one, creating their own theme, which changed monthly. Wu Ruixue, a publicity committee member and a student of soft brush calligraphy, and Dai Ze, a longtime art student, were assigned to them. So, Fu Dongqing assigned them the responsibility for the boards.
Although Xiao Cheng could neither write nor paint, Wu Ruixue and Dai Ze trusted him immensely. After one asked, "Xiao Cheng, what do you think?", the other would immediately ask, "Xiao Cheng, what's your opinion?"
As the three of them were talking, they talked about the math class representative. Wu Ruixue and Dai Ze both had something to say about this matter.
"Although the math class representative is not as important as the class committee member and anyone can be the one, do you know that Xu Wenqiang graduated from Qingshi Junior High School?" Wu Ruixue showed contempt when she mentioned "Qingshi Junior High School".
"What's wrong with graduating from Qingshi Junior High School?" Dai Ze didn't care. "We judge people by their grades. Su Xiaoshan also graduated from Qingshi Junior High School and is also a class committee member, right?"
Upon hearing this, Xiao Cheng looked at Dai Ze with a higher opinion: "Qingshi Junior High School does have a bad reputation, but what Dai Ze said makes sense. A hero is not judged by his origin."
Wu Ruixue was naturally unhappy and snorted, "You two are in cahoots."
"Great minds think alike." Xiao Cheng said with a smile.
Just as Xiao Cheng was beginning to look at Dai Ze with new eyes, Dai Ze continued, "It doesn't matter where Xu Wenqiang graduated from, but as the last in the class, she really shouldn't be the math class representative. There are many people in this class who are more qualified than her. She really should take a piss and look in the mirror to see what kind of person she is before making a decision."
Dai Ze's face already had a mean look, and when he said such nonsense, his face became even uglier.
Wu Ruixue clapped her hands and laughed: "This time, I think the same as Dai Zeyingxiong."
Xiao Cheng's smile remained unchanged, but it had faded. "She was appointed as the class representative by the homeroom teacher, with the approval of the math teacher. It's disrespectful of the teacher for us to discuss her privately like this."
"Xiao Cheng is right. Let's not talk about it anymore." When Wu Ruixue heard that the teacher was involved, the smile on her face fell. "Anyway, this matter is already set in stone. There's no point in talking about it anymore."
"So what if it's set in stone? Don't we have pliers to pull out nails?" Dai Ze sneered, "Didn't the homeroom teacher say that we have to re-elect in a month? And—"
Dai Ze stopped and motioned Wu Ruixue to come over.
"What's wrong?" Wu Ruixue moved her stool and moved closer to Xiao Cheng somewhat awkwardly.
"Didn't you smell a fishy odor on Xu Wenqiang?" Dai Ze whispered.
"A fishy smell?" Wu Ruixue looked puzzled. "I don't smell it."
Wu Ruixue was still half-comprehending, but Xiao Cheng could already see the malice in Dai Ze's eyes. He glanced at Xu Wenqiang, who was oblivious outside the classroom, and felt a pity for her. She had done nothing wrong, yet she had to endure this unprovoked calamity, a high-level hunt.
Xiao Cheng suddenly became irritated and nearly burst into a swearword like Xu Wenqiang. But he wasn't Xu Wenqiang, he was Xiao Cheng, so he forced himself to smile as usual, but the smile was gone. "There's no fishy smell at all. Classmates, don't gossip like that. Class is almost time, go back to your seats."
"Xiao Cheng, wait a moment." Wu Ruixue no longer cared about being shy. She leaned over to Xiao Cheng and asked Dai Ze, "Tell me, what's that fishy smell?"
Dai Ze no longer kept the secret and said in a gloomy tone, "I've always smelled a faint fishy odor coming from Xu Wenqiang, but I didn't dare to confirm it. Until yesterday, Sunday, when I accompanied my mother to the Qingshi Farmers' Market to buy vegetables, I saw Xu Wenqiang and her mother setting up a stall selling seafood in the market. Only then did I confirm where the fishy odor came from."
Wu Ruixue suddenly said "Oh" and suddenly realized: "Now that you mention it, I also feel that Xu Wenqiang really has such a fishy smell. I didn't notice it before. Xiao Cheng, do you smell it?"
"I don't smell any fishy smell." Xiao Cheng shook his head in denial, then whispered, "On the contrary, I feel that Xu Wenqiang has a faint rose scent." This is what he smelled when Xu Wenqiang was sitting on the back seat of her bicycle.
"That only means she sprayed perfume to cover up the fishy smell on her body," said Dai Ze.
"That must be the case." Wu Ruixue nodded.
Xiao Cheng lost all patience to maintain his composure, and his expression turned completely cold. He was about to explode when Gao Zhe came back with a basketball in his hand: "What are you talking about? You look so excited."
Wu Ruixue looked eager to try: "Gao Zhe, let me tell you——"
"Wu Ruixue, Dai Ze, class is about to start, let's go back first. We'll talk about the bulletin board later."
Xiao Cheng used his last bit of rationality to order the guest to leave. Then, he strode out of the classroom, but happened to meet Xu Wenqiang who was returning to the classroom at the door.
There were two people, one inside the door and one outside.
His face was frosty and hers was full of questions.
She turned left, and he followed.
She turned right again, and he followed her right.
Xu Wenqiang looked up at Xiao Cheng with an impatient look on her face: "Make way!"
Xiao Cheng looked at the unruly Xu Wenqiang in front of him, reached out and tapped her on the forehead, then walked out of the classroom.
This high-level hunt had already begun when Xu Wenqiang agreed to be the math class representative, and that unexpected disaster was a vine that grew from the darkness in people's hearts, so Xu Wenqiang had long become the prey of the vine and had nowhere to escape.
After about a week, Xu Wenqiang felt something was wrong.
