Chapter 1 Traveling to the 1980s

"Shu Hui, you need to know your own limitations. Jian'an is no longer a good match for you!"

“Shu Hui, Hui Lan is right. Jian An is already a college student. He could marry anyone, not just you, but even the county magistrate’s daughter. Although you are his wife, you only have an elementary school education. You need to think more about his future. If people knew he had a wife and children back in his hometown, would they still value him?”

Who is it? Who is speaking? Her head felt like it was sinking into a swamp, and her eyelids were so heavy she couldn't lift them. Chu Yu tried to open her eyes, but it was all in vain.

I heard a sobbing sound; it was from that woman named Shu Hui.

“Mother, elder sister-in-law, you can’t say that. I gave birth to four children for Jian’an and worked hard to support his studies. How can he just abandon me like that?”

"How dare you say that! Look what you've raised your daughter to be! To steal a man from Xu Yiyi, she pushed him into the river. Luckily, Yiyi was quick-witted and dodged it. Your daughter, in her attempt to do evil, rolled into the river and injured her head. How could our Zhou family have given birth to such a shameless slut!" Mother-in-law Jiang Meifeng scolded.

Chu Yu's head was spinning. She opened her eyes groggily and saw wooden beams covered with cobwebs and mottled yellow mud walls. Opposite the bed was an old calendar poster with the year 1983 clearly written on it.

Many unfamiliar memories flooded her mind; they belonged to the original owner of Zhou Chuyu's life.

The original owner's mother, Shu Hui, gave birth to three daughters and one son. The original owner was the eldest daughter in the family. When the college entrance examination was reinstated, the original owner's father, Zhou Jian'an, changed his age on the household registration book to be two years younger, and successfully took the exam and became a college student.

To support Zhou Jian'an's education, Shu Hui worked like an animal, cultivating over ten acres of land by herself, doing all the farm work for the family, earning money to take care of the children and her in-laws, and sending living expenses to her husband every month.

The man was a heartless man who fell in love with a woman with a child in college. He would rather raise someone else's child than even glance at his own.

Shu Hui cried and made a scene, but she couldn't win back his heart.

Three days ago, Shu Hui finally saw Zhou Jian'an return to his hometown, but she was also told that he wanted a divorce.

Shu Hui was in unbearable pain, crying and making a scene, unable to believe that men could be so heartless. Influenced by her mother, the original owner of this body also had no kind attitude towards the vixen her father brought back.

The fox spirit's name is Dai Qinxue. The original owner had a dispute with her daughter Xu Yiyi and was pushed from behind by her. When she fell into the water, her forehead hit a rock and she lost consciousness.

Despite Shu Hui's repeated pleas, the original owner's grandmother, Jiang Meifeng, couldn't bear to give her even five cents to buy a single pill at the health center.

The original owner died from a persistent high fever, which is why Chu Yu transmigrated into this body.

"Chu Yu, you're awake?" Shu Hui wiped away her tears, not wanting her daughter to see her in such a disheveled state. "Is anything bothering you? Let me get you a glass of water."

Chu Yu grabbed her hand, stopping her from doing anything. The original owner's aunt, Zhou Huilan, seeing her niece awake, said without ceremony:

"Shu Hui, look at yourself in the mirror. Your face is sallow, your hands are rough and peeling, and your clothes are tattered. How can you be a good match for a college student? My brother is a handsome young man. He will only be ashamed to be with someone like you. Asking you to get a divorce is an honor for you. Don't be ungrateful!"

Shu Hui couldn't believe that her sister-in-law was so heartless.

Her father-in-law was in poor health, and her mother-in-law was lazy and loved to eat, so she was the one who took care of everything in the family.

My sister-in-law is all talk and no action; she often brings her child home to freeload.

She often helped her sister-in-law take care of her children, cook and do laundry for her, and even took care of her when her sister-in-law had a miscarriage. How could she turn her back on her?

"Sister-in-law, I've helped you so much," Shu Hui said, choking back tears.

"Nonsense! What can a country woman like you do to help me!"

Zhou Huilan had no guilty conscience. Yesterday, Dai Qinxue made a special trip to visit her, treating her, her sister-in-law, with utmost respect and obedience. She even promised that after marrying Zhou Jian'an, she would arrange a job for Zhou Huilan's husband and transfer Zhou Huilan's son's household registration to Beijing.

Dai Qinxue comes from an extraordinary family and is a high-class young lady, while Shu Hui is a country girl who didn't even finish elementary school. Everyone can see which is more important.

So, Zhou Huilan went to her brother's house to clear away the obstacles to him living off his wife.

Chu Yu scoffed inwardly. She had seen plenty of shameless people, but she had never seen anyone as shameless as the Zhou family.

Now that she has transmigrated into Zhou Chuyu, she is Shu Hui's daughter. How can a daughter remain calm when she sees her own mother being bullied like this?

Her dark eyes were fixed on Zhou Huilan. "Aunt, what you said is not right."

Zhou Huilan frowned, unable to understand why her timid and taciturn niece had suddenly started talking.

"What's wrong?"

"My mom may not know how to dress up and isn't good enough for a college student, but she's absolutely good enough for your brother! Don't forget, it was my mom who worked the fields and sold grain to earn money to support your brother's college education. She worked hard in the dead of winter, her face turned yellow and her hands became rough, and all the money went to your brother to enjoy himself. Now you look down on my mom? When your Zhou family took money from my mom, didn't you complain that the money was ugly?"

Zhou Huilan was taken aback; her niece's words made her feel guilty for a moment.

Indeed, since marrying into the Zhou family, Shu Hui has been an incredibly hardworking and devoted woman, handling all the household chores single-handedly. Shu Hui is also good to her two children, and Zhou Huilan can't find a single fault with her sister-in-law.

However, the promises of wealth and luxury that Dai Qinxue had made gradually took over, forcing her to lie through her teeth.

"Money? You two are really good at calculating. How much money could your mother, a country woman, possibly have? It's as if the entire Zhou family depends on your mother for support!"

It's strange. This niece usually lets herself be beaten and scolded without ever daring to talk back. Why did she get shot today?

Dare to talk back to her!

"Why not?"

The original owner was an expert at keeping accounts; she knew exactly how much money her mother earned from the fields.

"To support Dad's schooling, my mom farmed ten acres of land all by herself. She sent Dad at least ten yuan every month, which adds up to four or five hundred yuan over four years. Add to that the money Grandma took from him, and it's at least six or seven hundred yuan! It's not that your Zhou family can't get a divorce, but this account needs to be settled!"

Shu Hui was so shocked by her daughter that she couldn't speak, feeling as if the sky was about to fall.

She was a traditional woman who only knew how to serve men, be filial to her in-laws, and love her children. She never thought of divorcing her husband.

How should a divorced woman live her life?

Shu Hui didn't want her daughter to continue, but Chu Yu stopped her.

Zhou Huilan was furious that her niece had suddenly become so shrewd. She grabbed Jiang Meifeng and said, "Mom, look at the good daughter Shu Hui has raised! She dares to talk to her elders like that!"

Jiang Meifeng gave her a reassuring look and smiled at Chu Yu, "Chu Yu, since ancient times, women have been expected to support their husbands, raise their children, manage the household, and serve their men. Your father is a college graduate, while your mother only has an elementary school diploma. Your mother is not good enough for your father. You can't blame your father for not wanting her; you can only blame her for not being good enough."
