Chapter 16 Quail

Dai Donglin laughed in exasperation. "No, care for...the disabled? Comrade, are you sure you want to care for me?"

The man had deep-set eyes, thick eyebrows, and a fierce, wild look. He was staring at her so seriously, wasn't it because he was unhappy that she hadn't given priority to the disabled?

I've already given him my spot, why isn't he satisfied?

Businessmen value harmony and prefer to avoid trouble. Chu Yu wisely chose to remain silent, after all, this man seemed ruthless and not someone to be trifled with.

The people in front of them had already paid. Because of Dai Donglin's arrogant demeanor, no one was willing to line up behind him, so only the two of them were waiting to pay.

Seeing that he was not moving, Chu Yu had no choice but to take the form and walk to the payment window. "Hello, I'd like to pay the hospital fees."

The hospital's efficiency has never been low, it's just that the tools are outdated. They still have to use abacus beads to do accounting, and checking accounts requires flipping through a stack of documents. It took quite a while to complete the admission procedures.

"One hundred short."

"Can I pay 700 first, and then pay the remaining 100 in a few days?"

The female accountant glanced at her and said, "Just don't forget."

When Mi Fei pushed the wheelchair over, he saw his brother Donglin staring at a girl in a daze. Following Dai Donglin's gaze, Mi Fei's heart skipped a beat. Damn! How come there's such a pretty girl?

Where did this fairy come from? How did she descend to Deyang?

Although her clothes were shabby and her braids were so outdated they were almost unbearable to look at, her appearance was truly stunning. Her skin was fair and smooth, and she was covered in fragrant sweat. Even without makeup, she was beautiful and exuded a natural fragrance.

Noticing their gaze, Chu Yu raised her eyes, a slight smile playing on her lips, and gestured for them to proceed.

This laugh stunned Mi Fei. He stood there dumbfounded, holding Dai Donglin's arm, laughing like a fool.

"Brother, this girl is so polite. She's so courteous even though we've only just met. It's really embarrassing. Do you think she might have a crush on me?"

Dai Donglin scoffed, "Taking a fancy to you? They're just showing concern for disabled people."

"What? A disabled person?"

Mi Fei's eyes widened, and he belatedly glanced at the cane that his brother Donglin was using. It's not that he's saying anything, but even with cane, Donglin still had an arrogant aura that made him look like he was about to rush up and fight someone. He didn't look like someone who needed care at all.

What was this girl thinking?

However, being cared for by such a beautiful woman, Donglin is truly getting his money's worth.

As soon as Chu Yu entered the ward, the noisy room immediately fell silent, and everyone stared intently at her face.

"How are you doing at your second uncle's house? Are you settling in alright?" Shu Hui asked with concern.

"That's good." Chu Yu told her about selling Night-Shining Sand.

Shu Hui was clearly surprised that the stuff could be sold for money. She was stunned and felt it was unreal. It was incredibly difficult for other people to make money, but her daughter could make money so easily. She had only been gone for three days, and her daughter had already sold night-shining sand for two days.

Shu Hui felt heartbroken again, blaming herself for being useless, being kicked out of the house by her husband while she was taking her daughter to school, and having to struggle to make a living instead of letting her daughter go to school.

"If Mom were home, she could help you."

"Your main task now is to help Chuchu heal her eyes; you don't need to worry about anything else."

Her daughter was even more like her mother than she was, which made Shu Hui inexplicably amused. "Alright, alright, whatever you say, Mom will listen to you. It's just that Chu Chu's hospital bill is still short by a hundred."

Chu Yu had her own plans for this. "Have you forgotten that Zhou Jian'an still owes us three hundred yuan?"

Shu Hui certainly remembered, but she knew the mother and son too well. Getting Jiang Meifeng's money was harder than getting her life. Jiang Meifeng had agreed to write an IOU to force her to divorce. Now that they were divorced, the Zhou family would definitely not acknowledge the debt.

Chu Yu wasn't worried at all. Those with nothing to lose have nothing to fear. Zhou Jian'an had obtained a Beijing residency permit and a secure, respectable job. He didn't want to pay any fees; Chu Yu wouldn't mind going to Beijing to help promote him, letting everyone know how touching his love story with his mistress was, and how Zhou Jian'an treated his wife and daughter back in his hometown.

"What if we can't sell the Night-Shining Sand?" Shu Hui asked worriedly.

"We'll sell for as many days as we can."

Chu Yu didn't ask Zhou Jian'an for money because she felt the weather was good lately and she wanted to seize the time to sell the night-shining sand. That's the downside of relying on the weather; you can't predict how the weather will change, and one day you might find that you can't make any money.

Before leaving, Chu Yu gave Shu Hui 1.4 yuan for emergencies. She didn't give her all of it because she knew that the security situation was bad these days, and there were especially many thieves in hospitals. Years ago, when Chu Yu's mother was hospitalized, Chu Yu went to the hospital to stay with her and almost had her phone and hospital fees stolen. If it weren't for the kind-hearted man next door who helped her catch the thief, she really wouldn't know what to do.

"There are restaurants outside the hospital. Don't skimp on the food; buy some good food for Chu Chu to nourish her," Chu Yu instructed.

Shu Hui reluctantly agreed, but she didn't know how to do it. She and her three daughters had been kicked out of their home by her in-laws, and she had to be extremely frugal. Where would she get the money to spend outside? She could just buy some affordable food for Chu Chu to eat her fill. As for herself, it wouldn't matter if she went hungry for a few days. She still needed to save the money to give her daughters a dowry.

Zhou Jian'an doesn't care about his daughter, but she can't ignore her.

There are at least twice as many shops on the streets of Deyang as in Rongtai County, and the variety of goods is much greater. The turnover rate of goods is also much faster than in the county town. Chu Yu saw a shop selling thermos bottles and she was somewhat tempted.

In those days, thermos flasks were a luxury item. They were expensive and required ration coupons, so ordinary farming families couldn't afford them. If you needed a thermos flask to be hospitalized, you had to borrow one from the village head.

Chu Yu really wanted to buy a thermos because her second uncle's family didn't have one, but she was short of money.

If you have little money, you have to spend it wisely. You have to be careful with every penny. Buying a thermos will have to wait.

A little boy was sitting on a stool selling newspapers on the street. When he saw her, he said in a childish voice:
