When Shu Hui rushed to the Luo family's house, Aunt Zeng came out of the house with tears streaming down her face.
"Aunt Zeng, what's wrong...?"
Aunt Zeng realized she had misunderstood, wiped away her tears, and smiled:
“Shu Hui, Kang Cheng is awake! He’s awake! Didn’t the doctor say that even if he woke up, he would have brain damage and be no different from a disabled person? I just talked to him. He remembers the past, he remembers who I am, he knows what happened in his family during the years he was in a coma, and he knows that I talk to him every day. Shu Hui, go and talk to him. I’ll go and call Dr. Wang to come and take a look.”
Shu Hui was stunned for a moment before she came to her senses, nodded, and went inside.
Shu Hui had seen Luo Kangcheng many times. For the past few months, she had been helping Aunt Zeng and Uncle Luo take care of Luo Kangcheng. The unconscious Luo Kangcheng was pale and thin, and lay on the bed without any threat.
When he woke up, his features were sharp and distinct, and his gaze was deep and authoritative, exuding an air of authority even without anger.
Shu Hui felt uncomfortable whenever he glanced at her.
"Uncle Luo... Uncle Luo."
Uncle Luo, with tears still in his eyes, quickly greeted her, "It's so late, why did you come here? You haven't met Kang Cheng yet, have you? Kang Cheng, this is about Shu Hui. These past few months, Shu Hui has often come to our house to help out and has taken care of you for several months. You two should meet, just to get to know each other."
Shu Hui felt awkward and forced a forced smile as she nodded at Luo Kangcheng. Luo Kangcheng noticed her restraint. He was naturally not fond of smiling and, as the deputy director of the Public Security Bureau, dealt with criminals all day long. Without a stern and imposing demeanor, he couldn't possibly keep them in check.
His professional habits made him rarely smile at people, and fearing that Shu Hui might overthink things, he nodded:
"Thank you."
Shu Hui quickly waved her hand, "I didn't do anything, I was just helping Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng out. We're all neighbors, and Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng often take care of my child. It was just a small favor."
Luo Kangcheng remembered this woman; she was in a vegetative state and could hear what was being said outside, but her soul was trapped inside her body and she couldn't wake up.
In the past, only his parents took care of him and would nag him. In recent months, Shu Hui often came to his home, would wipe his body, and would tell him interesting stories about opening a shop. More often, she would talk about her daughter.
The eldest daughter, Chu Yu, opened a clothing store and also invested in a furniture factory; the second daughter likes to write novels and is full of imagination; the third daughter is like a boy, but she has grown a lot taller in the past six months and looks like a girl now.
Shu Hui was full of pride when she talked about her daughter.
Luo Kangcheng had been lying in bed for years, feeling bored and listless. Hearing Shu Hui chatting about everyday things brought him a sense of novelty. The woman's voice was also gentle. Luo Kangcheng had heard his parents talk about her past. Her husband had gone to university and then abandoned his wife and daughter. Shu Hui had come to Deyang alone with her daughter to make a living, which was extremely difficult for her.
Luo Kangcheng's voice was hoarse. Shu Hui poured him some honey water, but he refused it.
It was bad enough when he was in a vegetative state, but now his muscles are weak and he can't walk. If he drinks too much water, his parents have to help him to the toilet. He is a man with his own dignity, and he has caused his parents too much trouble. He really doesn't want to trouble the old folks anymore.
Aunt Zeng's voice came from outside, filled with obvious joy. Dr. Wang also came in, gave Luo Kangcheng a simple examination, and asked some questions.
"It's a miracle. Even if a person in a vegetative state wakes up, they will still have brain damage. But you are no different from an ordinary person. The tests are normal. If you are still worried, you can go to the hospital for a brain test tomorrow."
Dr. Wang and Luo Kangcheng are old classmates who have known each other for many years. In the past, when Luo Kangcheng was injured while handling cases, he would always seek out Dr. Wang.
Luo Kangcheng nodded. "Thank you."
“We’re too polite to say thank you to each other. Kang Cheng, you have no idea how sad we classmates were for you after you fell into a coma. At class reunions, everyone would tear up whenever you were mentioned, saying that you and Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng had been good people your whole lives, but you ended up with people like this. Fortunately, God has mercy on you and you have woken up. Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng’s later years can finally be looked forward to.”
With Dr. Wang's words, Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng were relieved. Luo Kangcheng was no different from an ordinary person; he remembered everything and spoke well. It was just that he had been lying in bed for too long and his legs were not very agile, so he needed to take it slowly.
After seeing Dr. Wang off, Uncle Luo and Aunt Zeng massaged Luo Kangcheng's legs while chatting with Shu Hui.
"I brought you steamed buns at noon. I saw Fangping, and she said Chu Xiang's article had a problem? What happened? Chu Xiang submitted an article to the newspaper?"
Shu Hui didn't hide it from her; this matter made her uncomfortable, but Zhou Fangchun and Mao Guangyu were powerful and influential, and she was afraid that she couldn't fight them and protect Chu Xiang.
Shu Hui recounted what had happened to them, and Uncle Luo noticed her worried expression and furrowed brows:
"Is this even possible? Secretary Zhao of the publishing house is just a Party Secretary, where did she get such audacity! And the Public Security Bureau isn't her private property, how can she just pull strings like that? The court can't allow her to cover up everything!"
Shu Hui didn't understand these things. Although she was afraid of trouble, she wouldn't let her daughter suffer. If she couldn't reason with Deyang, she would go to the provincial capital. If that didn't work, she would go to Beijing. Could Zhou Fangchun really extend his reach to Beijing?
"I plan to take my daughter to the police station tomorrow."
“Yes, call the police first. The officers at the police station are all pretty good, not those kinds of people. If my Kangcheng hadn’t been unconscious at home, they could have solved the problem for you with just a word,” Uncle Luo said.
Shu Hui waved her hands repeatedly, "We can handle this ourselves. Let Comrade Luo get some rest and don't bother him with such a trivial matter."
Deyang Middle School hadn't been interviewed by a TV station in a long time, so Principal Ji dressed up carefully early in the morning and instructed the whole school to wear their school uniforms to ensure that Deyang Middle School would have a good image.
The TV station interviewed Mao Xia and the principal, so naturally Zhang Zhihe, the homeroom teacher, also had to say a few words. Zhang Zhihe had already bought a suit, but not for Mao Xia's interview; he bought it for Chu Yu.
