Chapter 183 Everyone Has a Backer

Innocent? Not necessarily.

It's true that Yu Shengnan and Mao Guangyu were classmates, but she hated the abuse of power for personal gain. She worked in the Deyang Public Security Bureau for more than ten years, but because she was inflexible, not quick-witted, and didn't know how to get things done, she never had the opportunity to be promoted.

She and Mao Guangyu weren't particularly close; at most, they were old classmates and half-fellow villagers who would occasionally visit each other—nothing special.

However, to say that Yu Shengnan would open a loophole for Mao Guangyu and protect Mao Guangyu and Zhou Fangchun from doing bad things is really not the case.

She won't be anyone's protector; she has to live up to the clothes she's wearing.

Yu Shengnan felt that Mao Xia was not innocent because the evidence was too strong. The girl next door said it clearly: the female protagonist in the book was created based on her sister. They even have the same height, figure, appearance, and birthday!

The doggerel in the book is actually an acrostic poem. Mao Xia and Chu Yu are at each other's throats. How could Mao Xia possibly write about his mortal enemy in the book?

Aside from this evidence, Yu Shengnan also possessed a woman's sixth sense. With years of experience in judging cases, she felt that Mao Xia was not innocent based solely on her sixth sense. On the other hand, Chu Xiang and Chu Yu were reasonable and composed, giving people a more reliable impression.

This matter also involved Secretary Zhao and Luo Changgeng, who were both summoned as well.

When Zhou Fangchun and Mao Guangyu arrived at the door, they ran into the two of them.

“Secretary Zhao.” Mao Guangyu shook hands with him.

Secretary Zhao smiled. He had gotten into some trouble, and Mao Guangyu had helped him sort it out and even gave him some money. Secretary Zhao accepted it without any guilt. He just didn't expect the provincial TV station to come and interview him, and he didn't expect Chu Yu to dare to call the police directly during the interview.

It's nothing serious, just plagiarism of a manuscript. Aren't these kinds of things common in publishing houses?

However, things had escalated and were difficult to handle, which inevitably made Secretary Zhao feel troubled.

The two exchanged a glance and went inside. Yu Shengnan was drinking water. When Mao Guangyu saw his old classmate, he felt a headache coming on for some reason. He had spoken to the bureau chief, and the bureau chief should have spoken to his subordinates as well. The problem was that Yu Shengnan didn't get along with the bureau chief and didn't give his old classmate any face.

To be honest, Yu Shengnan was promoted by Luo Kangcheng, the former deputy director.

Yu Shengnan only gave this deputy director face.

Even though the new bureau chief held a high position, he couldn't make Yu Shengnan submit. With his daughter in Yu Shengnan's hands, Mao Guangyu felt something was amiss.

He's quite good at handling things; he first spoke to his colleagues in the bureau.

"Comrades, you've worked hard. I'm really sorry to trouble you with such a small matter. It's just that my daughter is shy and can't swallow the accusation of plagiarism, which is why she came to the police station. But my daughter has excellent grades, all her teachers like her, and she is very talented. She spent more than half a year writing this book, and I can testify that she could not have plagiarized someone else's work."

Mao Guangyu's words defined the nature of the matter.

Mao Xia comes from a good family. Her father holds a high-ranking official position, and her parents have considerable connections in Deyang. She is also an excellent student in school. How could such a good student plagiarize?

A tactful man smiled:

"Mao is an excellent student; this is just a misunderstanding. Zhou, right? We're all classmates. You've taken this to the police station for such a small matter. Aren't you afraid of the negative impact it will have on yourselves? You'll be working in Deyang in the future, and we'll see each other all the time. Why don't you think about yourselves?"

Chu Yu laughed; this was a threat.

Anyone can step on her head.

"May I have your name?"

The man paused, then smiled, holding a glass of water, and said in a slightly slick tone, "Why are you asking my name?"

"I need to know at least the name of the person who threatened me."

The man's expression changed. These high school girls were the most timid. He had more experience. Even if Chu Yu and Chu Xiang wanted to cause trouble, they would have to consider their future job prospects. As long as they returned to Deyang, they would be on Mao Guangyu's turf.

Mao Guangyu was close to the Qiu family. The child was naive and didn't understand the implications. The man kindly reminded him, but the other party not only didn't appreciate it, but actually dared to go against him!

She's gone too far!

The man threw down the notebook in his hand and said sternly, "Threatening you? You little girl are really clueless. No wonder you're accusing others of plagiarism. I think you and your sister are both bad influences, trying to extort money from Director Mao's daughter."

Chu Yu sneered: "I'm clueless, and you're slandering them? You don't even know what happened, and you've drawn such a conclusion without any investigation. I think you're the one who's not learning anything good!"

The man was so angry he almost laughed. He had already thrown his notebook down, and most people would have been too scared to speak, but Chu Yu was different. She actually dared to launch into a long-winded argument with him. This girl was truly extraordinary.

Unfortunately, he was blocking someone else's way. His male colleague's younger sister worked at Mao Guangyu's company and relied on Mao Guangyu for support, so he had to protect Mao Guangyu.

"Watch your mouth! Do you know where you are? You dare to challenge me?!"

The man said some very harsh things, and even threatened to lock Chu Yu up and torture her, to make her experience the cold shoulder. In short, he said all sorts of frightening things that most people couldn't withstand, but unfortunately, Chu Yu wasn't buying it.

In places like this, the weaker you are, the easier it is for others to bully you.

She had evidence: the TV crew members were peering in from outside, suggesting they were interested in the subject matter. Chu Yu didn't mind providing more material for others.

Threaten her? Fine, let this guy keep threatening her. The more intense the conflict, the better. She's just a student, what punishment could she possibly receive? The crackdown in Deyang isn't over yet. There are local bullies and their protectors. Whoever walks into the line of fire is going to be in trouble.

Chu Yu wasn't going to stop this guy from becoming cannon fodder.
