Chapter 27 The Zhou Family Standoff

Four wheels are faster than two wheels. They didn't encounter another car along the way. Dai Donglin drove fast, and they arrived at Zhoujia Village in just half an hour.

"Turn left at the next intersection, then turn right at the first grove of trees, and you'll be there."

Dai Donglin turned the steering wheel, and the military green jeep drove into the village, much like a depth charge, causing quite a stir in the village.

Good heavens! A Jeep! Haven't any of the villagers ever driven one or heard of one?

This car costs 30,000 to 40,000 yuan to buy and is used as a military vehicle. It's not something you can just buy whenever you want. Although it's not the most expensive car on the market, these days the road conditions are poor, and this kind of car is the most practical for long-distance travel.

These days, are people who need to travel long distances just ordinary people?

Chu Yu didn't expect it to attract such attention. She didn't think that Dai Donglin, who drove a Jeep, was superior to others because she used to drive a G-Class. In the era of fierce competition in the automotive industry, Dai Donglin's license plate was really nothing special.

But she forgot that this was the early 1980s, an era when even a household with 10,000 yuan could make it into the newspapers. What did it mean to buy a car for 30,000 or 40,000 yuan?

It would take a full-time employee more than ten years of saving every penny to afford it!

A family in the countryside earns less than two hundred yuan a year. Buying a jeep that only county-level officials can afford is something they wouldn't even dare to dream of!

Some people have calculated that 10,000 yuan in the early 1980s is equivalent to 2 million yuan in later years.

Actually, that's not all. Back then, 10,000 yuan could buy several houses or a courtyard house in Beijing. When museums were short of money, they would sell their collections. For a few dozen yuan, you could buy something of comparable value. In later generations, 2 million yuan would be more than enough to buy such a thing!

Based on this calculation, a Jeep that costs 30,000 to 40,000 yuan would be worth far more than just seven million yuan in later times!

It's no wonder the villagers reacted this way; Chu Yu hadn't thought things through. After a moment's thought, she told Dai Donglin to park the jeep on the side of the road.

"Thank you, Brother Dai, for dropping me off here."

"Are you home?"

Chu Yu replied briefly, "My parents are divorced, and my dad owes us money. I'm here to collect the money."

One should never speak too frankly with someone you don't know well. Chu Yu didn't want to tell Dai Donglin about her family matters, but it wouldn't be appropriate not to answer when Dai Donglin asked.

She could tell that Dai Donglin had feelings for her, but their family backgrounds were very different. Not only did she come from a rural area, but her family also had a lot of problems. From a marriage perspective, no one would want a woman with such a family background. She didn't want to hide anything, so she told him everything so that he would back down sooner.

Dai Donglin smiled meaningfully, "Then I'll wait for you even more. In case you get beaten up, I can back you up. Go on! I'll be waiting for you here!"

The weather was hot. Dai Donglin rolled down the car window, and the noisy chirping of cicadas came in waves. A wave of heat hit him, and he squinted as he watched Chu Yu's back.

This girl is really brave. She came all by herself asking for money without any fear. She looks gentle and weak on the surface, but she's actually like a female warrior charging into battle. I wonder what she's like when she's in love.

When Chu Yu entered the Zhou family's gate, the Zhou family was having dinner.

The Zhou family originally only ate two meals a day, but Dai Qinxue was from Beijing and was used to three meals a day. Zhou Jian'an said he would take good care of her, so Jiang Meifeng had no choice but to serve her like an empress dowager.

Jiang Meifeng thought it was just a matter of three meals a day, but she oversimplified the issue.

After the land in Zhoujia Village was distributed to individual households, Shu Hui was in charge of managing the ten mu of land allocated to the Zhou family. Usually, Shu Hui would take her daughter to work in the fields during the day, cook dinner when she got home, and wash the family's clothes after dinner. She was often busy until the early hours of the morning before she could go to sleep. Before dawn, she would have to get up again to cook pig feed, make breakfast, clean the house, and also find time to take care of the children and look after Zhou's paralyzed father.

When Jiang Meifeng was young, she was a lazy woman. She wouldn't even pick up an oil bottle if it fell over. In the past, her father, Zhou, would always be there to help her. But after her father was paralyzed in the back by a piece of timber while working on the river, and her daughters got married one after another, Jiang Meifeng couldn't find anyone to take care of, so she started to enslave her daughters-in-law.

Shu Hui was always a pushover, never fighting back or arguing back. Jiang Meifeng, taking advantage of this, simply stopped doing any work at all!

When Zhou Jian'an filed for divorce, she was only thinking about Dai Qinxue's status as a city dweller, but forgot to think about what to do with the ten acres of land at home!

Farm work in the fields is no easy task. Whether it's the dead of winter or the scorching heat of summer, rain or shine, you have to do it whenever work comes your way!

Tilling, fertilizing, sowing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding...

After finishing the rice, they moved on to the wheat, and after the wheat, they moved on to the soybeans. When transplanting rice seedlings, the rubber boots didn't work, so they had to go barefoot into the fields. When harvesting wheat, they were so tired that they were dizzy, but they still had to grit their teeth and keep going! One mu (a Chinese unit of land area, approximately 0.165 acres) was manageable, but the Zhou family had a full ten mu of land!

The man is paralyzed, the daughter has long since run away, the son says college students can't work in the fields, and the grandson can't be relied on. She's the only able-bodied person in the family, and all the work falls on her shoulders!

Jiang Meifeng never expected to end up like this. She hadn't worked in the fields for many years and had no idea how hard farm work was.

After a few days, blisters formed on her palms and soles. Even so, she still had to serve Dai Qinxue, this pampered young lady from the city, and she was almost exhausted.

Thinking back, it was always Shu Hui who served her; she had never served her daughter-in-law before.

Jiang Meifeng was seething with anger, but dared not vent it in front of Dai Qinxue. Seeing Chu Yu was like seeing a punching bag for her.

"What are you doing here? You couldn't make it out there and want to come back and ask us to take you in, could you?" Jiang Meifeng held her head high and mocked mercilessly. "Let me tell you! Your mother and father are divorced. Don't even think about getting any benefit from your father by staying with your mother. If you have the guts to leave, then don't come back! Don't think we'll take you in!"

Jiang Meifeng believed she had the confidence to say this.
