The villagers all watched Chu Yu and her three siblings grow up.
Zhoujia Village is such a small place that the children run around freely, going from house to house to play. The villagers have watched her grow from an infant in swaddling clothes into a graceful young woman.
I often marvel at how fast time flies.
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, no one in Zhoujia Village has ever gone through a divorce. Rural people struggle to make ends meet, so why would they have time for all sorts of ulterior motives? No one would resort to divorce unless absolutely necessary.
When Zhou Jian'an, a college graduate, returned to Zhoujia Village, he set a precedent and broadened people's horizons.
When she got divorced, Chu Yu took her younger sister and left with her mother without saying a word. She preferred a mother who begged for food to a father who was an official. The villagers all gave her a thumbs up, thinking that this child was kind, conscientious and had backbone!
Zhou Jian'an is a hands-off parent who has never taken care of his child. Chu Yu's growth into her current state is entirely due to Shu Hui's efforts. Even so, Zhou Jian'an doesn't appreciate Shu Hui's kindness and pushes such a good daughter away.
Zhou Laosan's wife, who lived on the east side, was straightforward and immediately stood up:
"Chu Yu, you and my daughter were elementary school classmates. Your aunt watched you grow up, so of course she'll recognize you!"
"We acknowledge it! How could we not acknowledge it?"
"Of course I do! You're just like my own daughter! I even dreamt the other day that you were picking grapes in my backyard when you were little."
Rural people are kind by nature and were very lenient towards the original owner and her daughter. Even though Zhou Jian'an was a native of Zhoujia Village and a genuine college student, the villagers did not show him any favoritism.
Chu Yu was grateful for the care and love these elders had shown to the original owner of the body.
"Thank you, uncles, aunts, grandparents. My mother taught me that we should always be grateful. I will always remember your kindness to me."
She took out the IOU signed by Zhou Jian'an and waved it in front of everyone.
"The elders all witnessed what happened on the day of the divorce. It was agreed that the three of us sisters would live with my mother, and my father would pay my mother 1,000 yuan in expenses."
"Don't think that a thousand yuan is a lot. This is the money my mother has spent supporting my father over the years. The Zhou family didn't have the money, so they wrote an IOU. Originally, I thought that if my family didn't have the money, I would be more lenient for a few more days. But my sister needs to have eye surgery and it costs eight hundred yuan. My mother and I really can't come up with that money, so we had to come back to ask my father for it."
"But he actually tried to renege on the money! He didn't even mention Chu Chu's surgery. I want to ask you elders, have you ever seen a father like this?"
Chu Yu's questions resonated deeply with the elders.
Not to mention the Zhou family, even these unrelated elders were very worried when they heard that Chu Chu was having eye surgery.
Are the eyes a common part of the body?
If 800 yuan can cure Chuchu's eyes, then it's definitely worth it!
What was Zhou Jian'an thinking?
He raises daughters for city dwellers, spoiling them rotten, but neglects his own daughter.
This father is so heartless! It's true what they say, with a stepmother comes a stepfather!
"Jian'an, Chuchu's surgery will cost money, and you have to pay for it!"
"Even if we're divorced, she's still your daughter. Make sure she has the surgery, and that Chuchu won't be affected when she looks for a job or gets married. This is a lifelong matter!"
"You're the one who wanted the divorce, so you should give Shu Hui some compensation. If it weren't for Shu Hui farming and supporting you, you wouldn't even have enough to eat, let alone go to university!"
"Jian'an, you weren't like this when you were little! How did you go to the capital and become so bad? You were all blinded by that vixen!"
The villagers don't care whether Dai Qinxue is a young lady from the Dai family or not; they only care about one thing!
Zhou Jian'an, what you did was unreasonable! They have to say something!
The people of Zhoujia Village feel ashamed when they talk about Zhou Jian'an's way of doing things!
A violent cough broke the noise of the crowd, and after a brief silence, a hoarse, aged man's voice came through the broken glass window:
"Jian'an, you have to pay this money!"
Chu Yu looked towards the northeast corner window, where the sunlight was dappled and intense, and the shadows of the trees seemed oblivious to her sorrow.
In my memory, the original owner's grandfather lived there.
The original owner's grandfather was a very kind person who never lost his temper with his granddaughter and never argued with her in his entire life. However, he was paralyzed in bed and had no say in the family.
If Yuan were still alive, hearing these words would have been somewhat comforting, as her grandfather still protected her even at this point.
Unfortunately, Jiang Meifeng was not happy.
Why is that old geezer getting involved in this mess?!
Jiang Meifeng panicked, "Jian'an, what should we do!"
Zhou Jian'an originally thought he could enjoy the prestige of being a superior person after returning to the village, but Chu Yu's meddling ruined everything!
Before he could even say he wouldn't give it to her, Chu Yu had already caused a stir in the village, with people gossiping about him and saying they were going to Beijing to find his teachers and superiors. Zhou Jian'an had no doubt that his eldest daughter was capable of doing such a thing.
Zhou Jian'an said angrily:
"What can we do? We'll give it to you! Mother, you go and borrow the money, and I'll send it back to you to pay off your debts when I get back to Beijing!"
Jiang Meifeng thought to herself, "Where can I borrow any more money? If I borrow again, I'll have to pay even higher interest rates. I can borrow but I can't repay!"
But things had already come to this point, and she couldn't back out without lending the money. After much hesitation, she had no choice but to grit her teeth and go out to borrow some.
Half an hour later, Jiang Meifeng returned with the money and counted the stack of ten-yuan notes in front of Chu Yu:
"Look carefully, here's three hundred yuan. Our Zhou family doesn't owe you a single penny! From now on, we're going our separate ways. Our Zhou family has no granddaughter like you! Once your father becomes successful, don't even think about coming back to ride on his coattails!"
Chu Yu took the money and found it amusing. "Don't worry, once I leave this room, I'll tell everyone that I don't have a father, that he left a long time ago! How did he leave? My grandma took him away!"
