Zhou Chufei was preoccupied with the idea of showing off to Chuchu. He knew the address of Yorkham's store and waited in ambush at the entrance of Yorkham for several hours, just in time to run into Chuchu and Shuhui going home.
Shu Hui held Chu Chu's hand, and Chu Chu skipped and hopped around, telling jokes from time to time, and leaning on Shu Hui's shoulder.
That was a kind of pampering that Zhou Chufei had never experienced before.
Back in Zhoujia Village, Shu Hui was strict with him. Under Jiang Meifeng's instigation, he hated his useless mother and felt that if he had a different mother, his life would definitely be better. After Zhou Jian'an was admitted to university, Zhou Chufei also agreed with what Jiang Meifeng said.
The father being with the mother is a burden.
Divorce is the best option.
He'll definitely have a bright future if he follows his father.
Zhou Chufei firmly believed this until he met his stepmother, Dai Qinxue. Dai Qinxue often beat him when no one was around, burned his skin with hot tongs, and poked his genitals with hard objects. Zhou Chufei developed a psychological trauma from his stepmother.
Zhou Chufei clung to a sliver of hope, thinking that if he wasn't doing well, Shu Hui and Chu Chu must be doing even worse.
A woman with no education and no social experience, taking her three daughters out to make a living, will surely live a life worse than a beggar.
Who knew that Shu Hui opened a shop and made a lot of money, and her three older sisters all lived very well with her.
Zhou Chufei felt both envious and jealous.
No matter how well she lives, she can never surpass him. He's going to Hong Kong. Zhou Jian'an is so rich. Even if Shu Hui works hard her whole life, she can never surpass Zhou Jian'an.
Zhou Chufei secretly followed them. Shu Hui bought a fish from a fishmonger. Chu Chu used to have poor eyesight, and Shu Hui had heard that eating fish eyes could improve eyesight, so she often bought fish for her to eat, and always saved the fish eyes for her.
Shu Hui bought some more vegetables and meat, saying she would make meatballs when she got home.
Zhou Chufei followed them all the way to the courtyard house.
The courtyard gate wasn't locked, so he secretly peeked out and saw Shu Hui busy in the kitchen, while Chu Chu took a book out of her bag, sat in a rocking chair, and leisurely read and recited her lessons.
The sound of reading filled the air as the sky gradually darkened. Shu Hui pulled the light cord, and the room was instantly illuminated by a dim, yellow light.
The steaming food on the kitchen stove, the dim light, and the figures of the mother and daughter together all became lingering shadows in Zhou Chufei's heart. He had no intention of showing off. What did he have to show off? Shu Hui even lived in a courtyard house.
Even though Zhou Chufei was young, he knew what buying a courtyard house meant.
Zhou Jian'an used to say that if he hadn't fled to Hong Kong, he would have bought a courtyard house and a Mercedes-Benz in Beijing and seen who would dare to look down on him.
Zhou Chufei couldn't express the feelings in his heart. He wanted to show off but couldn't bring himself to say it, so he could only leave angrily.
Jiang Meifeng was packing her things when she saw Zhou Chufei return. She paused for a moment, then asked in confusion:
"We're about to board the train, where have you been? You've been gone all afternoon?"
Zhou Chufei remained silent with a dark expression, letting Jiang Meifeng ask him until his mouth was dry. Jiang Meifeng didn't know why he was angry, and muttered to herself as she stuffed the last of the items into the box.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open, and Zhou Huilan came in while munching on an apple. She paused for a moment when she saw them packing their things.
"Mom, where are you and Chu Fei going? Why are you packing so much stuff?"
Jiang Meifeng paused for a moment, touched her hair, and smiled awkwardly: "Oh, Huilan, I'm planning to take Chu Fei back to my hometown."
"Go back to your hometown? You're doing so well in Beijing, why would you go back to your hometown to live a poor life? Mom, what are you thinking?"
Seeing that she didn't suspect anything, Jiang Meifeng smiled and said:
“Isn’t your dad home? You know his situation, I’m worried about leaving him alone. All three of you siblings are making money in Beijing, what am I supposed to do here? Mom just wants to take Chufei back to our hometown to enjoy a few days of peace and quiet. Besides, Chufei doesn’t have a Beijing household registration, so he hasn’t been able to go to school in Beijing. He’s such a big kid, he can’t just not go to school, can he?”
In the past few days, Zhou Fangchun arranged for Zhou Huilan and Bao Liu to go outside and rented an apartment for them near the company.
Only when they are not around can Jiang Meifeng openly pack her bags.
Unexpectedly, Zhou Huilan suddenly returned.
Zhou Huilan wasn't particularly clever, but she wasn't stupid either. She felt that her second sister and third brother were hiding something from her, fearing that they would make a fortune without taking her along. That's why she kept coming here every few days, only to run into Jiang Meifeng packing her bags.
She didn't believe a word Jiang Meifeng said. She knew Jiang Meifeng, her mother, too well. Back then, Jiang Meifeng was so heartless as to starve her father to death for fear of being a burden on him. How could she possibly go back to her hometown to take care of him?
This is illogical.
Besides, Zhou Jian'an has made so much money, can't he find a school for Zhou Chufei to attend in Beijing?
Zhou Huilan, cracking sunflower seeds, said sarcastically, "Mom, do you think I'm stupid? You hate Dad so much, would you go back to your hometown for him?"
"Couples may quarrel in bed but make up before they get out of bed. Even if Mom hates your dad, she can't just abandon him, right? Besides, Jian'an and Fangchun are making money now. With money, taking care of him is no big deal."
Zhou Huilan was skeptical, but still felt that something was wrong.
"By the way, have you been to Chu Yu's school? How are things between her and Shu Hui lately?"
Zhou Huilan is just a gossip; she wants Shu Hui to know that she's made money so she can show off.
Jiang Meifeng quickly waved her hand. She had originally planned to make a scene at Chu Yu School and force Shu Hui to give Zhou Jian'an money to pay off his loan. But now that Zhou Fangchun had established a mutual aid association, they no longer needed Shu Hui's money, so Jiang Meifeng naturally had no need to cause trouble.
However, Jiang Meifeng really didn't want that little hussy to be too happy.
When Zhou Huilan heard that Shu Hui ran a fast food restaurant in Beijing, she wanted to go there and freeload off Shu Hui.
