Chapter 350 Zhou Jian'an Settles Down in the Port City

Zhou Chufei is Zhou Jian'an's only bloodline, and he never expected to become successful.

If he had known, he would have abandoned Zhou Chufei and come to Hong Kong to find another woman to have a child with.

Have a few kind and loyal children, instead of an ingrate like Zhou Chufei who would sacrifice his own grandmother and aunt for personal gain.

Zhou Chufei has a mirror on him, which allows Zhou Jian'an to see the secret realm deep within his heart, where a true version of himself resides.

Zhou Jian'an was displeased. He stared at Zhou Chufei for a long time with a gloomy expression before issuing a warning:

“Hong Kong is different from the mainland, so you better not try anything funny.”

Zhou Chufei frowned, then heard Boss Jing call them in to get their residence permits. Boss Jing slipped them some money, and they got them done quickly. Both Zhou Jian'an and Zhou Chufei now had residence permits for Gangcheng.

"I can get my ID card in half a month," said Boss Jing, smoking a cigarette.

Zhou Jianan nodded. Hong Kong was completely different from the mainland. The air was filled with the scent of freedom and money. Zhou Jianan looked at the rows of lights in the distance and felt a rare sense of bewilderment.

He was among the first batch of college students after the resumption of the college entrance examination in mainland China. He had his own ideals and ambitions, and he once thought of using his knowledge to give back to society. However, he went astray and eventually ran away to Hong Kong.

It's not uncommon for mainland university students to be in Hong Kong. The city is full of elites, and the pedestrians you encounter on the street are all dressed in business suits and have shrewd expressions on their faces.

The port city is too developed, with subways and ferries, and skyscrapers that make you feel lost.

In his forties, starting from scratch, even though Zhou Jian'an had money in his pocket, he felt lost and helpless.

Boss Jing glanced at the two of them. "You two don't seem to be poor. So, is there anyone here who can help you find a place to stay? If you don't have any relatives, I can help you find a house. Just give me a commission."

Zhou Jian'an shook his head. He knew Mao Xia's address. Zhou Fangchun had secretly sent Mao Xia to Gangcheng without his knowledge, thinking she had done it perfectly. But Zhou Jian'an wasn't stupid. He had intercepted Zhou Fangchun's letters several times when she tried to send them here.

Zhou Jian'an pulled Zhou Chufei along the streets of Hong Kong. Their clothes were out of place in Hong Kong in the 1980s. The huge contrast brought disappointment, making Zhou Chufei feel particularly inferior.

He couldn't ignore the scrutinizing gazes of passersby.

One cannot ignore the sense of superiority hidden in the humid air of the port city.

Zhou Jian'an also noticed the stares from passersby. He hadn't noticed it on the mainland, but after coming to Hong Kong, he realized how unfashionable their clothes were.

The two men, carrying snakeskin bags, made their way through a maze of alleyways to a relatively new apartment building in a residential complex.

Zhou Jian'an pounded on the door. The neighbor, brushing his teeth, poked his head out, frowned, and cursed in Cantonese, as if telling them to stop arguing.

Zhou Jianan had someone tutor him in Cantonese, so he could understand a few sentences. He apologized and continued knocking on the door.

After a long while, a sound finally came from inside the house.

The door suddenly opened, and Mao Xia, dressed in tank tops and hot pants, appeared before them in disheveled state.

Mao Xia had just woken up and was still in a daze. When she saw them, she stared blankly for a long time before letting out a surprised cry:

"Uncle? What brings you here? Chu Fei? You've all come to Hong Kong? Where's my mom?"

Mao Xia peeked out and looked behind them. Zhou Jian'an, his expression unchanged, said:

“Your mother is handling some matters in China, so she asked Chu Fei and me to come first. She and your grandmother will arrive shortly after.”

“I need to take care of something. My mom wrote to me saying she’ll be in the port city in the next few days.”

"That's how it was supposed to go, but who knew the news would leak out? The four of us escaped to Bao'an together. We took a fishing boat and fled, but we ran into the police halfway there. To avoid attracting attention, we took two boats. Chu Fei and I took Boss Jing's boat, and your mother and grandmother took another one. After the police came to check, we all fled in different places by boat, and we agreed to meet up in the port city."

Mao Xia panicked a little. She felt that something was wrong. Although Zhou Fangchun had not mentioned Jiang Meifeng's imprisonment, she knew Zhou Fangchun's character well. Her mother was willing to give up everything to come to Gangcheng. How could she run away with Zhou Jian'an?

"Uncle, you're not lying to me, are you? My mom has been planning this for so long, what if she gets caught?"

“When we parted ways, your mother told me that if she couldn’t get out, I should come find you. She gave me your address because she was worried that you would be alone in Hong Kong without anyone to take care of you, and she wanted us to support each other.”

Only Zhou Fangchun knew Mao Xia's address. If Zhou Fangchun hadn't told Zhou Jian'an, Zhou Jian'an would never have known it.

If Zhou Fangchun can't escape, she'll only have Zhou Jian'an and Zhou Chufei as her two relatives.

Just as Mao Xia was about to let them in, a naked thug came out of the house. Seeing Zhou Jian'an and Zhou Chufei, he sneered, not even bothering to put on any clothes:

"Mao Xia, do we have guests?"

Zhou Jian'an was, after all, an elder. Mao Xia was spending Zhou Fangchun's money to fool around in Gangcheng, but she didn't expect to lose face in front of her elder. She pushed the thug out the door, threw her clothes at him, and slammed the door shut.

Mao Xia rented a two-bedroom apartment, but people in Gangcheng are used to apartments without balconies or living rooms. Since the living room can be converted into a bedroom, it's actually a pretty good three-bedroom apartment.

Renting such a large house in the port city must cost a lot of money.

She originally planned that when Zhou Fangchun came, there would be a place for her and her daughter to stay. The two rooms had a kitchen and a washing machine, which was spacious and modern. After Zhou Chufei and Zhou Jian'an arrived, Mao Xia pulled out her sofa bed for Zhou Chufei to stay on.

Zhou Jian'an stayed in another south-facing bedroom.

Mao Xia knew Zhou Jian'an had a lot of money, but she didn't know exactly how much, so she tentatively asked:
