Chapter 38 Lifesaver

A car being stolen sounds ridiculous and even like a fantasy, but in the days before surveillance cameras, it wasn't uncommon.

Dai Donglin bought this Jeep 212 for the convenience of long-distance driving. It's a good car, durable and sturdy. Even with the terrible roads in Shanguan Village, it can still drive in smoothly. If it were any other car, the tires would be worn out and smoking.

However, the 212's disadvantages were just as obvious as its advantages. This car was tall and bulky, looking quite normal from the front, but with a soft-top, removable cloth canopy at the rear. In the early 1980s, convertible technology was not advanced enough, so there was nothing inside the cloth canopy except for a useless roll cage. You had to be careful in wind and rain, and naturally, there were no anti-theft measures whatsoever.

Zhao Lei, that jinx, was already yelling about it on the way there:

"Brother, what's the difference between having a roof and not having one? I can stick my hand out of the awning, and others can stick their hands in from the outside to open the car door. You can just steal it like that."

Just as I feared, this car thief was quite audacious. He had a stack of documents and permits on his driver's seat, each one of which would be quite intimidating on its own. Even if this car thief was illiterate, he should know that Dai Donglin was not someone to be trifled with!

But this car thief didn't follow the usual path, and he actually managed to steal it!

They stole without hesitation! They stole completely!

Dai Donglin immediately called his connections at all levels in Deyang City and had people block off entrances and exits in various places. Jeeps are very conspicuous things; they can't be hidden just because you want to.

Car thieves steal cars to make some money, and to sell them smoothly, they have to drive them out of Deyang as fast as they can before trying to dispose of them.

Dai Donglin then ordered his men to guard the border of Deyang.

Since the car thief couldn't leave Deyang, he had to find a way to sell the car. Putting aside Dai Donglin's connections in Deyang, even with the abilities of his uncle and several of his local friends, they couldn't let him get into trouble in Deyang.

The man was more concerned about the theft than if his own car had been stolen. He even contacted the border crossing. He didn't ask for the car back for even an hour, let alone a whole day. When the car thief crossed the Deyang border from the village, the local police caught him red-handed!

Since the thief helped him find his car, Dai Donglin naturally had to use his connections to return the favor. The thief had damaged his dashboard, so he went to a repair shop to fix the car. When he finally finished dealing with all that and returned to the hospital, he learned that Chu Yu's sister had already been discharged.

So, they had no choice but to come to Shanguan Village to curry favor.

If they're going to push you, then so be it. What can you do?

Even a strong woman can be won over by a persistent suitor. What does a man care about saving face when looking for a partner? If you care about face, you won't find a wife. Of course, someone as clueless as Mi Fei doesn't understand this!

Dai Donglin, with a cigarette between his fingers, was so jolted around that he was about to curse, but thankfully the winding mountain road finally came to an end.

Although the roads in the village were not good, they were smoother than the mountain roads. He drove to a small river in Shanguan Village, stopped the car, rolled down the window, and asked someone for directions.

Mi Fei was also squinting from the sun.

It must be said that the environment of Shanguan Village is truly beautiful, with green mountains and clear waters, lush trees, and sunlight filtering through the gaps in the trees, scorching yet intense.

"Brother Donglin, there's a group of kids over there!" Mi Fei said, pointing to the riverbank.

Dai Donglin then went upstairs with a cigarette between his fingers.

"Hey! Why are they fighting? It's like they're ganging up on the weak!" Mi Fei stared at the child.

The "smaller" in the so-called "bullying the smaller" refers to Xiao Jiang, who had just bought a Sun Wukong candy figurine. Holding the newly bought figurine, Xiao Jiang heard that the popsicle vendor had come to the riverbank, so he wanted to buy a few popsicles to treat his older sisters.

But as soon as they reached the riverbank, they were ambushed by Zhao Dabao from the Zhao family.

Zhao Dabao was a few years older than Xiao Jiang and was also quite strong. He was spoiled by Du Chun'e and became a bully at home. He dared to talk back to his parents at home, but he was timid when he went out. However, Zhao Dabao was naturally not afraid of a short guy like Xiao Jiang.

Last night, Du Chun'e and Zhao Qianjin failed to find any luminous sand, and upon returning home, they berated Shu Aiguo's family.

Du Chun'e said bitterly, "They'll pay for this sooner or later!"

Zhao Dabao felt that Shu Aiguo had stolen his business.

Shu Aiguo is an adult, and he dared not offend him, but Shu Aiguo's son, Xiao Jiang, was easy to bully. When he heard that Xiao Jiang had come to buy sugar figurines, he gathered a few friends to follow him. After waiting for half an hour, he seized the opportunity when Xiao Jiang was alone and cornered him by the river.

Zhao Dabao shoved Xiao Jiang, his face full of resentment:

"It's all your family's fault for stealing my mother's business! You even dared to eat sugar figurines, you're so proud of yourself!"

Xiao Jiang defended the sugar-blowing artist, not backing down, "It's clearly your family that copied our business! You're the ones stealing our business!"

"How dare you say that!" Zhao Dabao angrily knocked Xiao Jiang's sugar figurine away.

Xiao Jiang had been longing for it for half a year before he finally saved up enough for a toothpaste tube. With his sister's support, he was able to buy a sugar figurine, and that's how Zhao Dabao knocked him to the ground!

The sweet smell quickly attracted ants, and Xiao Jiang's eyes turned red.

"I'll fight you to the death!"

Zhao Dabao was not to be outdone. He caught a glimpse of the floodwaters rising upstream and pushed Xiao Jiang hard. The frail Xiao Jiang lost his balance and fell straight down.

thump!

Water splashed everywhere, and Xiao Jiang plunged headfirst into the river, disappearing without a trace.

Zhao Dabao's friends Dachuan and Erwei got anxious. Zhao Dabao gave them candy and told them to come along and scare Xiao Jiang, but they never intended to kill him.

This river is also known by the villagers as the Deadly River. In previous years, when the village was flooded, children would fall in and never come back up alive. They are young, but they understand what they should know. Their parents have repeatedly told them not to go near the river. If this gets out, they will be in big trouble!

"What...what should we do? If Shu Aiguo finds out, he'll kill us!"

"Then don't tell him!" Zhao Dabao swallowed hard, forcing himself to remain calm. "You're all involved. Anyone who dares to say they're an accomplice will be beaten to death by Shu Aiguo! If you don't speak up, nobody will know. Do you hear me?"
