"And then?" Zhou Huilan asked eagerly.
Xu Yiyi thought for a moment, "I heard that he suffered a mental breakdown and was sent to a mental hospital."
"What? A mental hospital? How could my mom have a mental illness? She's perfectly fine, healthy, and mentally sound. She's even more sassy than others. How could someone like her have a mental illness? Could it be that Zhou Chuyu deliberately sabotaged my mom and sent her to a mental hospital?"
Xu Yiyi has never liked Zhou Chuyu. Zhao Hanqiao is a very hardworking man. He has good grades, outstanding appearance, and is now taking the entrance exam for Tsinghua University's graduate program. With his grades, he will definitely be accepted.
A man as outstanding as him shouldn't have an ex as unworthy as Zhou Chuyu. Xu Yiyi disliked the way Zhao Hanqiao looked when he reminisced about Zhou Chuyu, and she disliked even more Zhou Chuyu constantly trying to get attention from her.
It's a disgrace to Tsinghua University that a woman like that could get into Tsinghua.
Xu Yiyi felt that Chu Yu was incompatible with her. Since Zhou Huilan wanted to bring down Chu Yu, she would help her out. Even if she couldn't bring her down, it would be good to ruin her reputation.
"I don't know about that. From what I know of my grandmother, she's always been in good health. I was quite surprised to hear that she was sent to a mental hospital. But Chu Yu has a good reputation at Tsinghua University, she wouldn't do something like that, would she?"
Xu Yiyi's words made Zhou Huilan even angrier.
"Pah! That little slut is no good at all. I heard that my mom came to Tsinghua University to ask Chu Yu for money, and I told her she should go back to her hometown after getting the money, but who knew she'd be sent to a mental hospital..." Zhou Huilan was frantic. What kind of place is a mental hospital? It's where a bunch of lunatics are locked up. Where was Jiang Meifeng sent? How much suffering is she going to endure! "Do you know which mental hospital she was sent to? I'm going to find my mom right now. Once I get her out of there, I'll make Zhou Chu Yu pay!"
Xu Yiyi heard them mention the name of the mental hospital, so she told Zhou Huilan what she knew.
The mental hospital isn't far from here, but Zhou Huilan doesn't have money to take the bus, and walking there isn't exactly close either.
She glanced at Xu Yiyi, then smiled obsequiously, "Yiyi, your aunt has always treated you well, hasn't she? We're practically family, after all. Your mother swindled my brother out of his money, so it's not unreasonable for your aunt to ask you for some money, is it?"
Xu Yiyi hesitated. She had just graduated and dressed like girls from wealthy families, but she was always broke and had no money left.
Zhou Huilan said meaningfully, "Yiyi, you don't want your aunt to go to your workplace and talk about your mother, do you? Besides, your mother cheated my brother out of so much money. Give me some money, and consider it as helping your mother pay off her debts."
Xu Yiyi's heart tightened; she was getting a little annoyed by Zhou Huilan's constant pestering.
But she still hoped that Zhou Huilan would bring down Zhou Chuyu, so she reluctantly took out 5 yuan and gave it to Zhou Huilan.
“Yiyi, this little bit of money isn’t even enough for your aunt to eat. It’s rare for your aunt to ask for anything, so you shouldn’t just give me 5 yuan. I won’t ask you for more, so just give me 15 yuan! After I finish what I need to do with your grandma, I can buy a bus ticket to go back to my hometown.”
Xu Yiyi looked reluctant, but since she still needed Zhou Huilan's help, she took out another ten-yuan note and gave it to Zhou Huilan.
Zhou Huilan's eyes lit up, and she said happily, "Yiyi, you're such a good person. There aren't many girls as beautiful and kind as you anymore. Zhou Chuyu can't compare to you at all!"
These words made Xu Yiyi feel a little better.
Zhou Huilan found out the address of the mental hospital, took two buses, and walked for forty minutes to get there.
The buildings in the mental hospital are not tall, and the overall environment is not as impressive as that of a public general hospital. The flow of people is also not large. You can hardly see any patients' family members, let alone patients.
The receptionist was wearing a nurse's uniform. Zhou Huilan walked over and asked in broken Mandarin:
"I've come to see Jiang Meifeng."
The receptionist nurse paused for a moment, "Jiang Meifeng?"
"Yes, he is of medium height, over sixty years old, looks quite energetic, and speaks with a strong Deyang accent."
The receptionist nurse recognized the name; Zhou Huilan looked somewhat like Jiang Meifeng. The nurse finally remembered, "Jiang Meifeng, right? She's in a ward on the first floor. Are you her family member?"
Zhou Huilan never expected Jiang Meifeng to actually be here! Zhou Chuyu is a real scoundrel; she's so cruel that she actually sent her own grandmother here to torture people. Her mother is such a good person; who knows what kind of torture she's endured.
In Zhou Huilan's imagination, Jiang Meifeng had been tortured to the point of being skin and bones, sickly and weak, and probably wouldn't see the sun rise tomorrow.
To her surprise, when the nurse brought her to Jiang Meifeng, she was truly shocked!
Things have changed, but Jiang Meifeng hasn't gotten worse; she's gotten better!
The hospital food was good, and Jiang Meifeng gained a lot of weight. Her waist became noticeably thicker, and a double chin was visible when she walked.
Because she rarely gets any sun, her skin has become much fairer, and thanks to the heating, it has a faint rosy glow, making her complexion quite good.
However, her eyes were a bit dull and unfocused. When she looked at people, she seemed unfocused. When Zhou Huilan walked over, Jiang Meifeng did not react at all, not even lifting her eyelids.
Zhou Huilan was stunned by Jiang Meifeng's transformation and was momentarily speechless. "Mom, what are you doing in the mental hospital? Mom, I've come to find you! Look up at me!"
Upon hearing this, Jiang Meifeng glanced up at her, then lowered her head again, her fingers making grasping and pinching motions in the air as if she were squeezing some nonexistent insect.
Zhou Huilan felt a chill run down her spine from her expression. "Mom, what's wrong? It's your daughter Huilan. I've been released from the police station and I've come to find you. Let's go back to our hometown together!"
