This was the first time Chu Yu had ever spent the Lunar New Year with her family in the port city.
They stayed at the best hotel in the port city. On New Year's Day, the atmosphere in the port city was particularly good. People set off fireworks on the river to celebrate the New Year. On the mainland, when celebrating the New Year, families would gather together to eat and drink, put up couplets, and set off fireworks and firecrackers.
But things changed after I came to the port city.
They first had their New Year's Eve dinner at a famous restaurant in the port city. The restaurant had a great view, with a distant view of the fireworks on the river. Shu Hui and Shen Jun didn't have to cook anything; they ate whatever was served.
The restaurant offers not only traditional cuisine but also expensive Western dishes. The chefs serve several tables of guests, with several staff members serving each table.
Chu Yu pondered that this feeling was quite nice. In fact, every year during the Spring Festival, the mothers in the family are extremely busy, and even if the younger generation can help, they cannot replace their busyness.
By the time they finished their work and went back to eat, the food was already cold.
"You two mothers have worked hard. Take a good rest this year, enjoy some ready-made food, and savor the food and the river view," Chu Yu said with a smile.
Shu Hui and Shen Jun exchanged a glance, both seeing happiness in each other's eyes.
Shen Jun spent three consecutive Spring Festivals with them. Shu Hui felt that the relationship between Chu Yu and Shen Jun was not like that of ordinary godparents. Chu Yu was too good to Shen Jun, just like Shu Hui. Shu Hui had never seen anyone treat their godmother so well.
An employee in Yorkham asked Shu Hui if she was jealous. Deng Fangping also asked Shu Hui this question, feeling that Chu Yu treated Shen Jun better than a normal daughter treats her mother, and was afraid that Shu Hui would feel neglected.
At first, Shu Hui also felt that Chu Yu was too good to Shen Jun. Later, after hearing Chu Yu say that Shen Jun did not have her own children but had adopted a daughter, the adopted daughter was not good and often caused trouble. Shen Jun had no contact with the adopted daughter, but was particularly good to Chu Yu and her two sisters.
Shu Hui thought that Shen Jun was treating her child as her own.
Shen Jun hasn't had much to do in her life; at this age, isn't it all about taking care of her children?
Shu Hui felt sorry for Shen Jun because she didn't have any children of her own. Shen Jun didn't care that Chu Yu and her two sisters weren't her biological children and treated Chu Yu like her own daughter. Shu Hui thought that was good. At least Shen Jun wasn't lonely or sad, right?
Besides, the fact that Shen Jun and Chu Yu were kidnapped together is, in a sense, a kind of fate.
Fate is a wondrous thing. Shu Hui has lived her whole life watching Chu Yu walk out of Zhoujia Village step by step, and she feels that fate is an invisible hand that no one can resist.
Since fate arranged for them to meet, they should treat each other sincerely. Therefore, Shu Hui never had any other thoughts about Shen Jun. She hoped that Shen Jun would be well, that Shen Jun would feel at home when she was with them, and that Shen Jun would treat Chu Yu as her own daughter.
The family sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, listening to the firecrackers outside and watching the beautiful night view. Chu Yu raised his glass.
"Cheers, everyone, to the upcoming year 1989!"
Chu Yu poured a glass for Chu Chu as well. Everyone raised their glasses and got a little tipsy. After a busy year, not having to cook for the New Year was a bit of a relief, but it was definitely more relaxing than back home.
The port city's night view, the intoxicating evening breeze, the beautiful fireworks, and the company of family...
Such happiness was spreading quietly, so much so that Mao Xia, who was not far away, could not believe her eyes. She stared at it for a long time before realizing that it really was Chu Yu! Not only Chu Yu, but also Chu Xiang, Chu Chu, and Shu Hui.
How could that be? It's one thing for Chu Yu to come to Hong Kong, after all, she has some money and a wealthy boyfriend. But why would she bring her family to Hong Kong? Is it for tourism or business? A trip from the mainland to Hong Kong costs a lot of money. Where did Chu Yu get so much money?
Mao Xia shook her head, took a few steps closer in disbelief, and secretly peered at Chu Yu and his group from the doorway of someone else's house.
Chu Xiang had grown quite a bit taller. She was wearing a red coat, a light-colored sweater, a short skirt and long socks, and a pair of white sneakers. She also had her hair permed like Chu Yu's. Standing in the crowd, Chu Xiang had an air of exceptional elegance.
Chu Chu has become a completely different person.
Previously, Chu Chu was short and small, like an underdeveloped potato, without any feminine characteristics. Now, Chu Chu is tall and has a sweet girlish charm, with black hair, a small face, and a pointed chin. At first glance, she really looks like a pampered little princess from a wealthy family.
The one who has changed the most is Shu Hui.
In Mao Xia's memory, Shu Hui was a timid and hardworking country woman. The scorching sun and wild winds of the countryside had tanned her face dark. Shu Hui had some spots on her face, dry skin, and empty eyes when she looked at people. She was obviously a country woman who had never seen the world.
Mao Xia thought Zhou Jian'an was handsome, fair-skinned, and quite good-looking. Shu Hui, his aunt, was not a good match for him at all.
Who would have thought that Shu Hui would change so much?
She had long, wavy hair, fair skin, and seemed to have drawn her eyebrows, giving her a light makeup look. The mauve lipstick brightened her complexion. She wore a khaki trench coat, and standing next to Chu Xiang, they looked more like sisters than mother and daughter.
Shu Hui has changed too much.
Mao Xia didn't have a good impression of her relatives in the mainland. She always felt that the mainland was still in dire straits and that Chu Yu could only make a little money by doing small things and could not possibly achieve anything great. In the end, if Chu Yu wanted to be respected, she would have to rely on her rich and powerful boyfriend!
Mao Xia felt that her choices were always right, that finding a rich man was right, and that coming to Hong Kong was right. She felt that even if she became a prostitute, she could earn tens of thousands a month in Hong Kong, which was much better than being on the mainland.
