Shu Hui's family home is in the neighboring Shanguan Village. Shu Hui has two older brothers. The eldest brother's family is better off; last year, they built a magnificent four-room tiled house. The second brother is honest and hardworking, and when the family divided the property, he was practically kicked out by the eldest brother empty-handed.
The second brother's house was next to the eldest brother's tiled house, but it consisted of only a few dilapidated mud and thatched houses.
Shu Hui went to knock on her older brother's door first.
A voice came from inside: "Who is it?"
"Sister-in-law, it's me."
After a moment of silence, Sister-in-law Shu asked in a shrill voice, "Shu Hui, what brings you here?"
Shu Hui gritted her teeth in embarrassment, "Sister-in-law, I was kicked out by Zhou Jian'an with my three daughters. We have nowhere to live now, so we'd like to stay with you for two nights. We'll move out once we find a place to live."
Sister-in-law Shu scoffed, her tone sharp and sarcastic:
"You talk a good game, but if you stay here and refuse to leave, who am I supposed to complain to? Go away! A married daughter is like water spilled from a cup. My house is too small for you to stay in. Go wherever you want."
Shu Hui's older brother and sister-in-law are snobbish. They used to treat Shu Hui quite well, but when they heard that Zhou Jian'an didn't want her, they stopped paying attention to their younger sister.
But she didn't want her child to go hungry or cold, and Chu Chu's eyes were really uncomfortable. Shu Hui wanted to plead, but the tightly closed door remained closed. Instead, a creaking sound came from next door.
"Shu Hui? It really is you! What brings you here?"
The one who came out wearing a coat was Shu Hui's second sister-in-law.
Shu Hui couldn't bear to let her second brother stay at his house because he was having a hard time. "Second sister-in-law, I was kicked out by Zhou Jian'an. He has another woman and doesn't want me anymore, not even the child."
The second sister-in-law glanced at them, then lovingly hugged Chu Chu in her arms.
"You were just about to make it big, but that heartless Zhou Jian'an wants a divorce! How could he be so ungrateful! He just abandons his own children like that. How are you going to live with three daughters like this?!"
Shu Hui's eyes reddened as she spoke.
Footsteps came from inside the house. Shu Aiguo shone his flashlight on the faces of the group and was clearly taken aback when he saw his sister and niece.
With several people carrying packages, how could Shu Aiguo not understand?
"Little sister? What happened to you... Did Zhou Jian'an abandon you? I knew he was no good! You are his lawfully wedded wife, and Chu Yu, Chu Xiang, and Chu Chu are his biological daughters! How dare he just abandon you like that? I'm going to settle accounts with him right now!"
In the original owner's memory, her second uncle treated them very well. Even though the family was poor, he would often bring them brown sugar to visit them.
Unfortunately, Jiang Meifeng kept all the good stuff and gave it all to Zhou Chufei.
“Second Uncle,” Chu Yu stepped forward and said, “my mother has already signed the divorce agreement, they are divorced.”
Shu Aiguo was so shocked by the news that he swayed.
He was an honest, simple countryman who, once he set his mind on a wife, was determined to stay with her until the end, never imagining he could get a divorce. A person should have a conscience! One shouldn't abandon a wife who has shared hardship. Why is it that even a college graduate like Zhou Jian'an doesn't understand this principle that everyone in the countryside knows?
Shu Aiguo's two children, Yunyun and Xiaojiang, came out.
Shu Aiguo has three children, and his eldest daughter is an apprentice in the county town. She has a boyfriend in the county town and rarely comes back.
Go get your cousin a glass of water.
Yunyun turned around and ran into the house to pour water, while Xiao Jiang looked at them curiously.
"Auntie, why did you bring so many packages to my house? Are you fleeing famine, or was there an earthquake?"
The unfortunate child got a hard knock on the head from Sister-in-law Shu. "Go away, you have no sense at all! What business is it of yours what adults are saying!"
Xiao Jiang ran away covering his head. Shu Hui felt very uncomfortable being questioned by her nephew. Yunyun brought her some water, and after drinking it, she felt better. Only then did Shu Aiguo ask, "Where is Chu Fei?"
Shu Hui's eyes reddened. She wanted to see her son one last time before leaving home, but he turned his head away when he saw her, and she never got to see him.
“That child is really spoiled,” Shu Aiguo had never been very satisfied with his nephew, feeling that he had been spoiled by the Zhou family.
"Second brother, it's my fault for not knowing how to raise children," Shu Hui sobbed.
"Alright, stop taking everything upon yourself. You've taught Chu Yu and the others very well. Now, let's not talk about this. What are your plans for the next step?"
Shu Hui looked helplessly at her daughter. She had always lacked her own opinions; when her husband was home, she listened to him, and when he wasn't, she listened to her daughter.
Chu Yu was surprised that Shu Hui would rely on her so much. It was a little funny. Shu Hui didn't have much of her own opinion, so she would have to put in a lot of effort to take care of the family. But she was also lucky. Whether in her past life or this life, she had a loving mother.
Chu Yu said, "I want to treat Chu Chu's eyes first. Tomorrow, I'll have to trouble my second uncle to accompany my mother to the city to pay Chu Chu's hospital fees. After Chu Chu's surgery, we'll move out."
Shu Aiguo was a little unhappy to see her being so polite.
"Why are you being so polite with your second uncle? Your mother just got divorced and has three daughters to take with her. Where can they move to? No matter how poor the family is, you'll still have food to eat!"
In her previous life, Chu Yu's foreign trade company had always been doing well. When she was in school, she also worked as a street vendor to earn living expenses. Before she transmigrated, she had five houses in Beijing, three cars, and a considerable amount of savings. Her net worth was quite substantial. Surely she wouldn't be unable to afford food in the 1980s when gold was everywhere?
Whether it's setting up a street stall or running a self-employed business, she's willing to do anything as long as it earns her a living.
"I'm planning to open a shop for my mom, but everything will have to wait until Chuchu's surgery is over."
Shu Hui was shocked by her daughter's decision. Open a shop? She was just an ordinary rural woman who could barely read or write, and all she knew was farming and taking care of children. How could she possibly open a shop? She would only lose money if she did!
