People of Shu Hui's generation prefer girls who are a little plump, which is why they think Chu Yu is too thin.
"Mom, I'm leaving now. Zhang Ying is treating me to dinner tonight."
Zhang Ying recently wanted to buy a batch of denim fabric, but she couldn't find a source. This kind of denim fabric is only available in Guangdong Province. In desperation, Zhang Ying had to ask Chu Yu for help. Chu Yu helped her contact a friend of the guy with buck teeth, who managed to get a batch of fabric from an overseas customer's order, which solved Zhang Ying's urgent problem.
"If it weren't for you, I definitely wouldn't have been able to ship this batch of orders."
Zhang Ying got Chu Yu a bottle of soda, and the two sat by the window, each ordering a roujiamo (Chinese hamburger).
"Why are we being so polite?" Chu Yu took a bite of the roujiamo (Chinese hamburger). Every time she ate this roujiamo, she felt a sense of familiarity.
It's like eating your mother's cooking in a past life.
The food was brought over by a young girl. Zhang Ying took a bite of the roujiamo (Chinese hamburger) and asked in confusion, "The boss lady didn't come today?"
Xiao Wang was sweating profusely from his busy work and quickly shook his head, "The boss lady didn't come today, but luckily she had already stewed the meat, made the noodles and porridge, and marinated the fried chicken. I just need to process these things and then I can serve them. My cooking skills are definitely not as good as the boss lady's, so please forgive me if I do anything wrong."
Chu Yu smiled and said, "You did a great job. The crust of this roujiamo (Chinese hamburger) is baked to a crisp, even more so than your boss's wife."
Xiao Wang was a little embarrassed by the praise. "Thank you, but how can I compare to the boss lady? I don't know what's wrong with her. She hasn't come or sent a message yet."
Chu Yu blinked and asked, "Did she always bring letters before?"
"Yes, there was a torrential downpour in June. The roof of the shop owner's house was leaking, and she was trapped and couldn't come to open the shop. So she asked the neighbor who works next door to send a message to me to open the door first, and she would come over later. But this time it's already afternoon, and she still hasn't sent a message. I don't know if something has happened."
Xiao Wang was worried about the boss's wife, so he was a little hesitant to do things properly.
Zhang Ying asked doubtfully, "Doesn't your boss have any family? Even if something happens, there should be someone to take care of her."
“After our boss divorced her ex-husband, she started her own business and made some money. However, her family cheated her out of all her assets, so she broke ties with her family and came to Beijing.”
Chu Yu asked, somewhat puzzled, "Doesn't your boss have any children?"
Zou Minzhao is not young anymore. At this age, she should have at least one child. Chu Yu knew that she had fallen out with her family and always thought that she was a single mother raising her child alone.
"No, the landlady couldn't have children. That's why her husband had a mistress who gave birth to a boy, which led to her divorce. She also adopted a child, but that girl was also a handful. When the landlady was kicked out of the house, her biological parents came looking for her, and she went with them. The landlady was quite heartbroken and has been living alone ever since."
Zhang Ying sighed, "Your boss's wife has had a tough time too. Last time we had dinner, her family came to make trouble. Her parents favor sons over daughters and have no feelings for her. They just want their daughter to give money to support their son."
"Yes, these days even biological children aren't filial, let alone adopted daughters."
Xiao Wang was quite emotional, but the shop was busy, and just as he was talking, a customer came in to buy a roujiamo (Chinese hamburger).
Xiao Wang quickly replied, "Please wait a moment, I'll make it for you right away."
After hearing what Xiao Wang said, Zhang Ying also started to worry about the landlady. Chu Yu pondered, "Where does the landlady live?"
Xiao Wang gave Chu Yu an address, which surprised her. "It's quite close to my house. I'll stop by when I get back."
Xiao Wang said happily, "Thank you so much."
Zou Minzhao gave Chu Yu a sense of familiarity, and Chu Yu instinctively wanted to get closer to her. Besides, in this day and age, people often help each other, unlike in later generations when people are indifferent to each other. If someone needs help, it's not a big deal for her to lend a hand.
After dinner, it was already dark. Zhang Ying rode her bike to the stall to sort the goods, and Chu Yu also rode her bike home. On the way, she made a special detour to the alley that Xiao Wang had mentioned.
Zou Minzhao's house was on the second floor. Chu Yu propped up his bicycle and prepared to go up and see what was going on.
The old-style apartment building was dark. Chu Yu knocked on the door and called out:
"Mr. Zou, are you there?"
A muffled thud came from inside the house, followed by light footsteps.
"Boss Zou, I'm a customer at the roujiamo shop. My surname is Zhou. Xiao Wang noticed you hadn't been to the shop and was worried something might have happened to you, so he asked me to come and check on you. If you're alright, please let me know so I can let Xiao Wang know I'm safe."
The hallway was quiet, and there was no more noise inside the room. Chu Yu frowned, feeling that something was wrong.
The door lock suddenly clicked open from the inside. Chu Yu thought Zou Minzhao was sick and was about to ask her a question when a muffled groan came from inside. Then, a hurried voice shouted, "Danger! Run!"
It's Zou Minzhao's voice!
Through the dark foyer, Chu Yu vaguely saw a shadow being pressed down on a chair inside the room. A man was standing next to the chair. He pulled the person on the chair over and covered the other person's mouth with his hand.
Chu Yu reacted quickly, turning around to run away, but the man who had been hiding behind the door grabbed her.
The next second, a cold blade was pressed against her neck.
Chu Yu's breath hitched, and he obediently raised his hands.
The man snorted coldly, "You're quite sensible."
In the darkness, Chu Yu smiled, trying to ease the tension:
"I can't help it if you don't know what's good for you. You're a man and I'm a woman. I have no physical advantage, and you have a knife. It's dark here, so I can't possibly fight you head-on."
