Mao Xia seemed to have lost her mind, making excuses for Xiang Yanlong on one hand and for herself on the other. She searched for evidence from the smallest details of the past, trying to prove that Xiang Yanlong had not lied to her, that they were truly in love, that he was a generous young master of the Xiang family, and that he would not abandon her.
I checked out because I was going home and there was no need to stay in the hotel any longer.
The company's relocation was just a coincidence.
He gave her so many luxury items; surely they weren't fake? A single bag costs tens of thousands, and a necklace is worth millions. Why would a conman be willing to spend so much on her?
Mao Xia frantically hailed a taxi home, carefully wrapped all the things Xiang Yanlong had given her in a bed sheet. There was a secondhand luxury goods store near Mao Xia's residence that specialized in buying and selling secondhand luxury items; for a fee, the luxury goods could be appraised.
Mao Xia entered carrying a bed sheet. Two staff members in suits paused for a moment before coming forward to greet her.
"Miss, how can I help you?"
Mao Xia trembled all over, almost unable to speak, "Help me... identify these things!"
She opened the bed sheet, revealing a dazzling array of jewelry and dozens of luxury handbags.
"Do we need to test them all?"
"Yes, all of them!" Mao Xia's expression was off. The staff exchanged glances, stated the price, and then picked up professional tools to begin the appraisal.
About half an hour later, the male staff member stepped forward and cautiously asked:
"Miss, may I ask, through what channels were these luxury goods purchased?"
Mao Xia was on the verge of tears. "It was a gift from my boyfriend."
"Boyfriend?" The two staff members exchanged a glance. The female staff member whispered, "Miss, these things are all fake. None of them are real! Especially these jewels, they are as fake as can be. This so-called ruby is just a common stone from Southeast Asia. It has a certificate of authenticity, but it has no value. The luxury bags are the same. These bags look obviously fake at first glance. The genuine ones don't have this kind of texture at all."
The staff member picked up a bag and said, "Ms. Mao, this bag of yours is made of lambskin. Lambskin bags are the most delicate, but your bag is exceptionally durable and wear-resistant. To be honest, this level of durability is obviously fake. This is probably a counterfeit luxury item made in mainland China. Your boyfriend probably can't afford real luxury goods, but he wants to make you happy, so he bought so many fakes. Don't be fooled by him."
Their words were the final straw that broke Mao Xia's back. She could no longer make excuses for Xiang Yanlong, and she suddenly collapsed into tears.
"He cheated me out of all my money. I thought he was the eldest son of the Xiang family, and I thought all those luxury items were real. I was so good to him, and I even got pregnant with his child. Why did he do this to me?!"
Mao Xia's words were very informative, and the two staff members exchanged a glance, both expressing their sympathy for her.
“Miss, please don’t do anything rash. You can report this to the police and let them help you investigate the case.”
"Yes, miss, how much money did he swindle from you? Should we call the police for you?"
“He swindled me out of 37 million yuan! That was money my mother earned with her life! My mother told me not to trust anyone, but I thought I had hooked up with a rich young man, and I treated him with all my heart, only to be swindled out of all my savings!”
Mao Xia was crying with tears streaming down her face, looking extremely pitiful. The staff wanted to help her call the police, but she was conflicted and couldn't make up her mind.
"Miss, he lied to you, why haven't you called the police yet?"
Mao Xia clutched her stomach, crying even more uncontrollably. "I'm pregnant with his child. He's the father of the child in my belly. I haven't made up my mind yet. Give me some time to think it over."
The two staff members looked complicated, both thinking that this person was not thinking straight. Girls in Hong Kong are realistic and clear-headed. Being deceived by a man is bad enough, but he still refuses to call the police.
Is she kidding me?!
Mao Xia broke down. Passing a trash can, she threw everything Xiang Yanlong had given her into it. After a few steps, feeling resentful, she picked it up again. She carried the bedsheets into the house and saw Zhou Jian'an sitting on the sofa drinking tea, crying and questioning her:
"Uncle, didn't you investigate the Xiang family's background? Didn't you say that Xiang Yanlong is the descendant of a billionaire?"
Zhou Jian'an was stunned for a moment, looking puzzled. "Didn't you hear your uncle making a phone call to his friend? The Xiang family is indeed a wealthy family in Hong Kong, and they do have a son of the same age. I'm just telling you what I know, so why are you blaming your uncle?"
"Do you know that Xiang Yanlong is a fraud! All the luxury goods he gave me were fake! His friend's company went bankrupt and he disappeared! He said he would take me back to the Xiang family, and I even got pregnant with his child. If you hadn't said he was the eldest son of the Xiang family, I wouldn't have believed him so much."
Mao Xia broke down and vented her emotions, crying like a baby.
Zhou Jian'an handed her a tissue. "Xiaxia, you're saying Xiang Yanlong is a conman? That can't be true, can it? He has luxury cars and yachts; he doesn't seem like a conman at all. Is there some misunderstanding?"
“What misunderstanding could there be? I took those luxury items to the store for authentication, and they said none of them were genuine. I can’t contact him at all now; he’s just vanished into thin air.”
"I'm sorry, Xiaxia, your uncle didn't know it would turn out this way. Your uncle was just helping out, and he meant well. Your uncle wants you to marry into a wealthy family even more than you do. Think about it, what good would it do your uncle if you were deceived? I definitely want you to have a better life."
Mao Xia was panicked and helpless, all she could do was cry, until her eyes were swollen.
Zhou Jian'an frowned. "Xiaxia, you weren't swindled out of too much money, were you? Tell your uncle the truth, how much of the money your mother left you is left?"
