Chapter 12 "You're always yelling at me."
Chapter Twelve: "You're always yelling at me."
There were empty tables in the middle of the lobby. Li Yue originally wanted to sit there, but Li Xiufang walked to the rectangular table by the window first and called out to Li Yue, "Sit here, the light is better here."
The table was in front of Ling Jianwei. Li Yue braced herself, originally intending to sit back-to-back with her blind date, but Li Xiufang took the initiative and pulled Li Yue, saying, "You sit with me, and your brother sits across from you."
So from where Li Yue was sitting, she could see Ling Jianwei's strikingly handsome face in one glance.
Ling Jianwei looked straight at her, her eyebrows slightly raised.
Receiving his gaze, Li Yue looked away, but couldn't help glancing at the girl opposite him.
From Li Yue's angle, she could only see the back of the girl's head and back, but she could tell that the girl was lively and cheerful, with a clear voice, and was constantly talking and laughing. From that fleeting glimpse, she could also sense that the girl was quite pretty.
The woman he's dating must come from a similarly wealthy family and be good-looking and well-dressed.
Li Yue unconsciously bit her lip as she watched her cousin order.
My cousin finally took the initiative and ordered a pot of regular tea, a plate of spiced melon seeds, and a plate of mung bean cakes from the waiter, asking if that was enough.
Li Xiufang said, "That's enough, that's enough. We just want to sit down, rest our feet, eat some sunflower seeds, and chat."
But Li Yue was still absent-minded. His gaze passed right through the girl and looked straight at her, carrying a hint of heat and a touch of resentment. Li Yue felt like she was sitting on pins and needles, as if she owed him something.
Li Yue didn't understand. He was going on a blind date, and she was accompanying her cousin on a blind date. It was a bit awkward, but blind dates were normal, weren't they?
She was too lazy to think about the relationship, so she simply picked up the newspaper they had brought, unfolded it with a rustle, and began to read, avoiding his gaze. Later, she simply held the newspaper up to cover her face.
Li Xiufang could also see Ling Jianwei as soon as she looked up. She thought this man was really good-looking, so good-looking that it made her feel happy and wanted to look at him more.
She leaned closer to Li Yue's newspaper and deliberately asked, "What news are you looking at? Let me see."
Then, she whispered, "That guy across from you seems to be staring at you, so that's why you covered your face with the newspaper?"
Li Yue: "No, that's how I read the newspaper."
Li Xiufang chuckled and said, "It's alright, you're pretty too, everyone likes to look at pretty people."
Li Yue frowned deeply.
Li Xiufang added, "That's quite interesting. Could it be that he didn't like his blind date, but instead liked you?"
Li Yue: "Don't talk nonsense, just focus on your blind date."
The tea was served, and my cousin, having something to do, poured tea for them and said, "Come and have some tea."
Li Yue then put away the newspaper, and the three of them drank tea and ate melon seeds.
But Li Yue could still vaguely feel Ling Jianwei's gaze, which made her increasingly irritable. Since it was time, she said, "I have something to do, I'll be going now."
Li Xiufang asked in confusion, "Where are you going?"
Li Yue said, "I'm going home. You can talk to my cousin slowly."
Li Xiufang realized that her task was completed and replied, "Take care then."
To avoid an awkward silence between them, Li Yue added, "I'll take this newspaper. You two can read the other one slowly. You can chat and discuss some of the news."
After saying that, he stood up, but the moment he stood up, he met Ling Jianwei's gaze again. His gaze was always so clear and cold, and his eyes were like the autumn wind, carrying a chill.
Li Yue gritted her teeth, grabbed the newspaper, and quickly left the teahouse.
Outside, Li Yue couldn't help but wipe the cold sweat from her forehead.
This is unbelievable.
Why is Ling Jianwei staring at her instead of his blind date? And why is he looking at her with a hint of resentment in his eyes? Is he afraid she'll laugh at him?
She's not that bored.
It's 11 a.m. now. According to the previous plan, if the blind date goes well, my cousin will treat his date to a bowl of noodles or dumplings. In short, he will have lunch before going home.
She then took the bus home by herself for lunch.
When my cousin got home, it was already three o'clock in the afternoon.
Judging from his beaming face, the blind date went very well today.
My cousin, ever the gossip, asked, "How did the blind date go?"
My cousin said, "Li Xiufang really likes Yueyue. She said we could go shopping together next time."
My cousin nodded: "There's a good chance. What do you think of her?"
My cousin said, "She's a really nice girl, thrifty and hardworking, and she's also quite interesting to talk to."
"It seems you're quite satisfied with her," her cousin analyzed.
My cousin couldn't hide his smile: "It's mainly thanks to Yueyue. If she weren't here, we probably wouldn't have anything to talk about. We ended up talking about Yueyue the whole time."
"Talk about me?" Li Yue was both amused and exasperated.
“If we don’t talk about you, who should we talk about? She said the guy at the table behind us was also on a blind date, and he kept staring at you.”
Li Yue sighed, "Aren't you afraid someone will overhear?"
“They left quickly after you left; she said that after they left.”
Li Yue: "That's alright."
My cousin added, "Anyway, next time I ask her out, I'll have to bring you along."
Li Yuecai had no interest in getting involved: "She was just saying that. Why don't you ask her out first? Otherwise, what am I, standing here, doing if you two are dating? A third wheel?"
My cousin said, "It's fine to give you a ride the first couple of times. The main thing is that with you there, there won't be any awkward silences, and she likes chatting with you. Gradually, I'll get to know her better, and then you won't need to go anymore."
In short, Li Yue still has to shoulder the heavy responsibility of facilitating her cousin's marriage.
Fortunately, my cousin's blind date went well, and Li Yue's help boosted my aunt's mood. For the next two days, their family's dining table was always filled with meat or eggs.
_
On Wednesday morning, Li Yue knitted a pink woolen hat at home.
Although she was clumsy before, she was an art student, so she had strong hands-on skills and a good learning ability. After mastering some techniques, she started knitting faster.
Seeing how well she knitted, her cousin said, "Sis, you're quite good at knitting."
Li Yue said, "It's alright, but I don't know how to close the needles yet. You'll have to teach me."
Just then, a figure appeared outside the door, and my cousin called out in a strange tone, "Sister."
Li Yue responded and looked over. Ling Jianwei appeared right there at their doorstep, stopping near the door frame with a bright gaze.
She was stunned. Hadn't they agreed not to come looking for her again?
Ling Jianwei glanced at the person knitting and tilted her head slightly: "I need to talk to you. Come out for a bit."
Li Yue stood there, motionless. He patiently asked, "Afraid I'll eat you?"
Since they've come to our door, we should at least greet them and show them the proper hospitality.
Li Yue had no choice but to put down her work: "Why don't you come in and sit down?"
"I'm not sitting here anymore. Come out and come with me."
Li Yue asked blankly, "Where to?"
You'll find out when you get there.
My cousin was also puzzled. She put down the sweater she was knitting, stood up to take her home, and asked anxiously, "Sister, are you going home for lunch?"
Li Yue turned to look at her: "I don't know."
The man chimed in, "Your sister isn't coming home for lunch."
After saying that, he strode outside, and Li Yue followed in his footsteps, feeling even more confused.
His car was parked in the family compound. Several neighbors stared at them, but he didn't care about their gazes. He opened the car door for Li Yue, let her get in, then went around to the driver's seat, got in, and finally drove away under everyone's watchful eyes.
Li Yue glanced at the man driving the car. His profile was slightly sharp, his gaze was fixed straight ahead, his jaw was tucked in, and his lips were pursed.
An ominous premonition came over Li Yue, and she felt that she had to keep a low profile and not talk too much, otherwise she would make a mistake if she said too much.
The carriage was completely silent. After a long while, Ling Jianwei finally spoke: "Why aren't you saying anything?"
Li Yue: "Why don't you go first?"
He glanced at her: "What do you want to hear?"
“I didn’t want to hear anything,” Li Yue said. “You were the one who contacted me.”
“Yes, I was the one who contacted you… then follow my instructions,” he said.
Li Yue thought to herself: Haven't you been the one making all the arrangements all along...?
And with that serious expression, one can imagine that this is how he leads troops in the camp. Does he see her as one of those soldiers he needs to discipline? She's not up to the task.
"What are you thinking about?" Ling Jianwei seemed to be able to read her mind.
"No, I wasn't thinking about anything."
Are you thirsty?
"A little." She felt uneasy, and her throat grew increasingly dry.
"Wait a moment."
The car quickly stopped at the same teahouse as a few days ago. Li Yue looked at him with a puzzled expression: "Why are we at a teahouse?"
This man seems to be doing it on purpose, insisting on bringing her here.
He pulled the handbrake and said, "It's still a while before lunchtime. It would be best to sit in a teahouse and kill some time. Didn't you say you were thirsty?"
Li Yue silently followed him into the teahouse. There were no seats by the window today, so they casually sat down at a table.
The waiter came over to take our order and asked, "What would you like to eat?"
Li Yue said, "You order."
Do you want some Sachima?
“Eat.” Li Yue nodded.
Last time she saw someone order Sachima on the table and wanted to try it, but it was more expensive than mung bean cakes, so her cousin didn't order it.
"What else would you like to eat?" he asked again. "Sunflower seeds?"
Li Yue said, "That's enough, we still need to eat later."
Ling Jianwei then said to the waiter, "First, order a pot of Biluochun tea and a plate of Sachima."
Sitting face to face, Li Yue noticed that he seemed a bit gentler, which eased her tense nerves and made her sit up a little more relaxed.
He smirked and said, "Why are you so nervous?"
"I wasn't nervous."
It was all his fault, how could he even ask?
The tea was served quickly, and as he poured it for her, he sighed.
Li Yue looked at him and asked, "Why are you sighing?"
“You saw it during our last blind date,” he said.
Sure enough, he was bothered by being seen on a blind date by someone he knew. Li Yue said, "I came here with my cousin and didn't know you would be here, otherwise I would have definitely avoided you."
"Why are you avoiding me?" Amidst the commotion of the tea drinkers, he sharply turned his gaze to her.
"You don't like being seen on blind dates by people you know, do you?" Li Yue said, looking at the Sachima on the white plate. There were five pieces in total, with a beige color and raisins and black sesame seeds on top.
She couldn't resist taking the top piece first, and took a bite. It was crisp, soft, fragrant, and sweet, with a hint of honey.
"It's so delicious," Li Yue couldn't help but say.
Although it's a bit sticky, drinking tea helps to remove the stickiness.
He looked at her satisfied expression, chuckled, and asked again, "Wouldn't it be better if you saw it?"
"Why?" Li Yue looked up at him, puzzled.
He paused almost imperceptibly: "Let me show you my situation."
Li Yue fell silent and could only lower her head to take another bite of Sachima.
“I was tricked into coming to see her,” he suddenly said, then picked up his cup and took a sip of tea.
Li Yue was surprised: "How did you trick me?"
Ling Jianwei put down her cup, picked up the teapot and poured tea into her cup, then poured herself a cup.
“My dad asked me to go out with him, and he brought me straight here. The girl is already waiting, so I can’t just turn around and leave,” he said.
Li Yue blurted out, "Isn't that the same as my last blind date?"
Ling Jianwei's interest was piqued: "How did you meet her last time?"
"It's the person I wanted to elope with. I hadn't agreed to the blind date, but my aunt asked me to borrow something from the matchmaker's house. That person was at the matchmaker's house, so I had no choice but to meet him."
Ling Jianwei asked, "So, on the day you ran away from your wedding, were you going to get your marriage certificate?"
"No, they came to propose marriage."
Why didn't you refuse?
"I refused. They kept trying to persuade me, but I thought, since I'm going to escape anyway, it would be better to give them a big surprise, so I didn't refuse very firmly."
“You had quite a plan,” he laughed, “but you still couldn’t escape.”
"It's all that old lady's fault. She's so strong. She just swung her arm and knocked me out." Li Yue was still indignant when she mentioned it.
"If you had escaped, what would be happening now? Would you be free?"
"Don't even mention it," Li Yue said bluntly. "I guess it's about the same for everyone. My aunt wrote to say that jobs are hard to find, but she can help me find a partner."
He seemed relieved: "It seems that God is probably arranging partners for you everywhere."
"No way, I'm only eighteen, what's the rush?" Li Yue declared unequivocally.
In this day and age, let alone the fact that marriage might mean having many children, she can't even make a living right now, so what kind of partner is she looking for? Besides, the one she finds doesn't even fit her aesthetic standards.
He looked at me with a deeper gaze, his tone meaningful: "What if God really arranges a suitable partner?"
Li Yue shook her head again: "No."
Why not?
"The main reason is that I don't want to get married."
"..." Ling Jianwei's expression hardened, and then she pursed her lips.
Looking at that fresh, clean face, the man took a deep breath: "Hurry up and finish what you're holding, stop dawdling."
Li Yue: "I know, you're always yelling at me."
Ling Jianwei: "..."
