Chapter 15. She's not a nun.
Chapter Fifteen: She's not a nun.
The aroma of dishes from my great-uncle's house wafted out and filled the entire courtyard.
Upon seeing Li Yue, the old man smiled so much that wrinkles appeared at the corners of his eyes: "Jianwei said he would bring you over at noon, but he came alone and said he would change it to evening."
Li Yue explained, "We had originally agreed to meet at noon, but something came up and I had to go out."
The old man said, "It's good that it's true, otherwise I would have thought that you two had a fight."
Ling Jianwei scoffed coldly: "Why are we having a fight? I've already told you, but you just wouldn't believe me."
"I can't comment on things that concern you young people," said the grandfather. "I bought some pig stomach this morning. Luckily, it's cold now, so it won't spoil. I made you some pig stomach soup to warm you up."
Li Yue obediently replied, "Okay, thank you, Grandpa."
The old man couldn't help but say, "Jianwei calls me 'Little Grandpa,' and you call me 'Grandpa,' so why don't we both call each other 'Little Grandpa'?"
Li Yue felt a little strange, but she still obediently called out, "Oh, Grandpa."
Ling Jianwei suppressed a laugh upon hearing this form of address. Li Yue glared at him, and he casually rolled up his sleeves, asking, "Is there anything I can help you with, Grandpa?"
"Go and wash the bok choy."
They ate dinner at six o'clock. After dinner, Ling Jianwei helped clean up, the lights were turned on under the corridor, and Li Yue fed the sparrows.
Grandpa said, "I'm actually afraid of noise. Every time they come in a huge group, it gives me a headache. But with you two here, I feel quite comfortable. It's not noisy, but it's not too quiet either. If Jianwei can be transferred back to Beijing soon and bring you over for meals from time to time, I'll be very happy."
Ling Jianwei chimed in, "Me, transferred back to Beijing? I'm afraid that won't be possible for the next two years."
The old man said, "Why not? How difficult is it to get your father to transfer you back to Beijing? I think you just don't want to come back."
Ling Jianwei retorted, "Who said I don't want to come back? No matter where I am, it's never as comfortable as working in a government compound in Beijing. It's just that the time hasn't come yet."
Grandpa snorted coldly: "The armored battalion you're in is a testing battalion for new equipment. You've been staying there all this time, aren't you just trying to make a name for yourself?"
Li Yue had never asked Ling Jianwei about the specific branch of the military or what his job was, and could only learn a little from snippets of information.
The more she learned about him, the more she felt that Ling Jianwei was a talented and capable young man from a military family who wanted to make a name for himself. In addition, he was so handsome and good at housework... After marriage, he would definitely be a good family man.
Such a flawless man should definitely be the male lead in a book.
But if he's the male lead, then who is the female lead?
The one you were on a blind date with?
Li Yue thought it was unlikely, since he had already made his position clear.
Or perhaps he isn't the male lead, but rather an important supporting character in the book.
As Li Yue pondered, she stood under the veranda looking into the house, her brows furrowed. Ling Jianwei came out and looked her over: "What's wrong? You look terrible. Are you sick?"
After saying that, he looked up and touched her forehead.
Li Yue leaned back, but his large hand was already covering her forehead.
"My temperature is normal," he said.
āIām not sick.ā She placed the small water bottle on the shelf.
"Come inside, it's windy outside." Ling Jianwei grabbed her arm and led her inside.
The great-uncle looked at the two of them and said with a smile, "Yueyue, Jianwei lived a rough and tough life in the army, but I think he still has the thoughtfulness he should have."
Li Yue sat at the table pouring tea and nodded: "Yes, Deputy Battalion Commander Ling is actually very good at taking care of people."
Ling Jianwei chuckled: "Is it a genuine compliment or a fake one?"
Li Yue said frankly, "I am stating the facts."
"I thought you couldn't see any good in me."
Li Yue took a sip of tea and didn't respond.
Around 7 p.m., the wind was a bit strong in the dark night. They came out of her maternal grandfather's house, and Ling Jianwei escorted her home.
Although there were streetlights on the streets at night, the light was not bright, and Ling Jianwei drove slowly.
As the lights outside the window flashed by one by one, Li Yue asked, "Are you going back to camp in a week?"
Ling Jianwei: "You counted them for me?"
Li Yue: "I remember when I ran away from my wedding it was in mid-October, and now it's November."
Back then, she could wear a long-sleeved dress with a coat without feeling too cold, but now she has to wear a thin sweater.
He remained silent for a long time before finally managing a smile: "What's the rush? I'll come and say goodbye when we get back to camp."
Li Yue nodded: "Okay."
"How so?" he asked with a smile.
Li Yue was speechless, but teased, "The good thing is I know you're back at camp. Now you have something to do and don't need to find someone to kill time anymore."
"You have no conscience. I'm not that bored."
The car drove into the residential compound as usual, and the lights of each household were turned on. Ling Jianwei sat in the car and watched her figure walk into her home through the flickering light and shadow before driving away.
No matter how you look at it, she still has the same attitude and hasn't considered personal matters.
Is it because they are too young?
But isn't eighteen the best age to dream? Or perhaps she hasn't let go of her childhood sweetheart, or she's heartbroken and hasn't considered these things.
Ling Jianwei speculated as she drove back to the compound.
These past few days, everyone in the compound has been talking about the two of them, saying that he's dating a beautiful girl. Aunt Yu, who's the most gossipy person in the compound, said to Ling Jianwei's mother, "Jianwei's made something of himself. He brought a stunning girl back to the compound. She's got looks that are undeniable; she'd be outstanding even in the dance troupe."
Ling's mother said to him, "I heard from your great-uncle that you even took her to his place for a meal. If you like her, bring her home to meet us."
Even the usually stern and unapproachable Ling's father relented: "Why didn't you tell me the truth about having a girlfriend? I've dedicated my life to revolutionary work, am I some kind of old-fashioned feudalist?"
Ling Jianwei was speechless.
The question is, is that his partner? Or is it that he doesn't want to bring her?
-
As we were going to bed that night, my cousin asked, "Sis, are you and Deputy Battalion Commander Ling dating? People in the compound are asking about it again."
Li Yue reiterated, "No, don't ask anymore."
My cousin bluntly pointed out, "But I feel like he might be pursuing you."
Li Yue fell silent.
If there were various seemingly legitimate excuses before, claiming they were just friends, then their visits to the compound and his great-uncle's house revealed subtle details in their eyes and actions. She wasn't stupid; even if she was pretending, she knew what was going on.
Li Yue said, "Go to sleep quickly. How old are you? Why are you always asking about these adult things?"
My cousin muttered for a moment, then said, "By the way, Gu Yanmei came over this afternoon to ask if you were here."
"I understand. She'll come to see me tomorrow if she needs anything."
The next day, Gu Yanmei came over again, saying she wanted to go shopping and asked Li Yue to accompany her.
Feeling bored, Li Yue went out with her.
Li Yue thought she was going to the department store, but Gu Yanmei said she was just going to wander around nearby. As a result, at noon, she ran into Wu Rongrong and Li Dongping near a hospital.
The four childhood friends met up and stared at each other blankly. Gu Yanmei took the initiative to greet them and asked why they weren't at work.
Rongrong said, "Dongping took leave and took me to the hospital."
Gu Yanmei asked with concern, "What's wrong? Are you sick?"
Wu Rongrong said proudly, "I'm not sick, I just went to get my blood tested."
Gu Yanmei: "Why would you need a blood test when everything is fine?"
Li Yue realized what was happening: "Oh, you're pregnant?"
Perhaps because her tone was too flat, Wu Rongrong rolled her eyes: "Could you change your tone?"
Fortunately, Gu Yanmei was both happy and surprised: "Really? You're pregnant so quickly!"
Rongrong nodded happily.
Seeing Rongrong's smug look, as if she were showing off that she was the winner, Li Yue couldn't help but find it funny. She herself had been too impulsive before, wanting to compete with someone like her.
So she said, "Congratulations on becoming parents at such a young age."
Li Dongping called out softly, "Yueyue."
It seemed to be a reminder to her not to be sarcastic or sarcastic.
Li Yue said, "No, I really wish you all the best."
"I think you two are a good match, why don't you have more children?"
Upon seeing the newlyweds, their expressions seemed even more unpleasant.
She truly wished him well from the bottom of her heart.
But they didn't appreciate it.
Seeing this, Gu Yanmei frowned and interrupted, "We still need to buy some things, let's talk again next time."
After saying that, he pulled Li Yue away.
On the way, he complained, "Yueyue, haven't you let go yet?"
"No, I really have let it go." Li Yue felt extremely wronged.
"But it sounds weird to me."
That's because you have something to hide.
Gu Yanmei seemed a little skeptical: "Although I believe you've let go, I still feel that you're really different from before."
Li Yue said in a nonchalant tone: "People have to grow up eventually, and besides, Dongping is just so-so."
Gu Yanmei glanced at her and said, "I have a question for you."
"What?"
"Do you have someone better in your heart?"
In that instant, a clear image of that man appeared in Li Yue's mind.
She shook her head, trying to banish him from her mind.
"Is it Deputy Battalion Commander Ling?" Gu Yanmei asked directly.
"Huh?" Li Yue came to her senses. "How could that be? No."
"But I feel that you must have fallen for me."
Li Yue's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
She maintained a calm demeanor and replied dismissively, "Let's not talk about this, let's go home."
However, this time she met a truly outstanding man, so how could she remain calm and unmoved?
She's not a nun.
