Chapter 4 Getting Married

When they met that day, A'ruan saw that Zhang had been holding his wrist, and he guessed that the other party might not know that he was a mute.

Zhang was afraid that he would raise his hand to gesture, so she kept pinching his wrist with her nails. Once she felt that he was about to raise his hand, she pinched his flesh hard.

Zhang was ruthless and showed no mercy, and Ah Ruan couldn't even scream.

A'ruan was not a piece of wood. He lowered his head and bit his lips in pain. His hands hidden in the wide sleeves could not help but struggle backwards, but as soon as he moved, Zhang pinched his wrist and glared at him sideways as if warning.

After meeting the person, Zhang dragged A'ruan back to the inner room, pushed him inside, gave him an unfriendly look, and closed the door.

The Wei family was not a troublesome family. The marriage between the two families went smoothly. Zhang was naturally in a good mood and was too lazy to argue with A-Ruan about what happened just now. After everyone left, he let A-Ruan out and said, "Go and cook. Are you waiting for me to prepare it for you?"

Ah Ruan clenched her fingers, hesitated for a moment, and finally pursed her pale lips, raised her hand and gestured to Zhang:

——You are deceiving others.

Zhang was drinking water. He pretended that a cup of plain boiled water tasted like Longjing tea before the rain. He raised his eyelids casually and caught a glimpse of Ah Ruan standing in front of him, saying these words to him.

Zhang's eyes narrowed immediately, and with a "bang", she threw the teacup in her hand onto the table fiercely, not caring about the hot water that splashed out. She stood up and poked A'ruan on the forehead, angrily saying, "Who are you talking to? Since ancient times, marriages have been decided by parents. I finally found you a wife, but you still can't even say a word, right?

Don't you look at yourself? You're a dumb person who can't even fart. If that poor scholar knew you couldn't speak, let alone marry you, I would even take your surname if she could just look at you for a second! ”

As Zhang was talking, she started to fight, pushing A'ruan, and the curses she said became more and more unpleasant.

He cursed A'ruan as a worthless thing who only made him lose money and he couldn't even earn a few taels of silver from marrying her.

After scolding her, he also scolded Wei Min, saying that she was a poor scholar whose family could not afford much money. She looked righteous but was actually a lecherous pervert who could not even move her eyes when she saw a man. He said that the books she read were not good-looking and brought shame to scholars. It would be strange for her to pass the imperial examination and become the top scholar.

Ah Ruan's face turned pale after hearing this. It would have been fine if Zhang had just scolded him, but why did she scold the scholar as well?

From the first glance, A Ruan felt that the scholar was not the kind of person Zhang described.

Zhang had no control over her mouth and cursed at everyone with all kinds of nasty things. Ah Ruan endured her for a while, but then she felt an inexplicable rage in her chest. She didn't know where the strength came from, but she pushed Zhang back.

Zhang was stunned by the push. He never thought that A'ruan would dare to resist. When he was pushed back, he took several steps back in a daze before stopping.

"You've grown up, Ruan, and you've become so independent now, right? I just said a few words to you, and you dared to touch me? I'll beat you to death!"

Zhang rolled up her sleeves and looked around the room for something useful, cursing, "If I don't beat you to death today, you won't know who is the boss of this family!"

Zhang was always ruthless. Once, A'ruan was beaten by him and could not get out of bed for three days.

Seeing Zhang striding towards the hall and bending down to get the fire stick, Ah Ruan was shaking all over.

But being afraid is not a big deal now.

A Ruan gritted his teeth, reached out to pick up the long chair and held it against his chest, then turned around and ran out.

Since Zhang wants to marry him off, he won't get a penny if she beats him to death!

He couldn't speak, but he could use his neighbors to make Zhang understand this truth.

Zhang shook the stick in her hand, turned around and saw Ah Ruan running out. She immediately chased after him, holding up her skirt. "You bastard, it's useless even if you run to the ends of the earth today!"

A'ruan is a nice person and gets along well with his neighbors. Now, as soon as they heard something was happening at the Zhang family, the neighbors on all sides would quickly put down their work and come out.

Glancing at Zhang holding a fire poker with an angry face, as if she was going to beat A'ruan to death, everyone looked at each other knowingly and rushed over to stop Zhang.

"Why are you so angry again? Weren't you fine this morning?"

"Aruan is going to get married in two days. What if you hurt him and he doesn't agree to marry her?"

"Don't tell me you're selling Ah Ruan to a brothel. Your daughter will be the top scholar in the imperial examination. When the time comes, the emperor will grant her a marriage with the prince. If someone with too many mouths reveals that her brother is a prostitute, won't your daughter's bright future be ruined?"

"Yes, Brother Zhang, don't bother with this child. She's going to get married anyway, so don't get yourself upset."

“…”

Everyone was trying to persuade Zhang, while protecting A'ruan who was behind them without leaving any trace.

Zhang was so angry just now that she just wanted to beat him to death and bury him. But after hearing what the neighbor said, she felt that she should put up with him for two more days for the sake of her daughter.

But Zhang couldn't swallow her anger. She spat angrily in the direction of A Ruan and threw the fire stick at him.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when they saw that the fire poker didn't hit anyone.

One or two people helped Zhang, who was gasping for breath, to calm him down, and then they supported him into the house. The remaining few reached out to take the bench that A Ruan was protecting in front of him, and asked him in a low voice if he was hurt anywhere.

Although A Ruan's face was pale, he was still calm in his heart. Looking at his neighbors who cared about him, he couldn't help but shook his head and forced a smile with the corners of his mouth.

Ever since he was nearly beaten to death, A'ruan no longer liked to go against Zhang. He would just endure whatever happened, and if he couldn't endure it like today, he would run away immediately.

When the neighbors saw that he was indeed fine, they felt sorry for the child, but they didn't know what to say to him.

We are all neighbors, so we should help if we can. We can't just watch Zhang beat someone to death.

After hearing a lot of nice words and several neighbors praising his daughter, Zhang finally calmed down. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ah Ruan coming in timidly from outside and didn't even look at him, so he just pretended not to see him.

Two days passed in peace, and on the wedding day, Zhang didn't even hang a cheap red lantern on the door. A'ruan's wedding dress and makeup were all done for him by several uncles and aunts in the neighborhood.

Wei Min was going to start a family, so he naturally could no longer live with his sister and brother-in-law. With the help of Wei Lian, Wei Min moved back to the old house.

The old house has only an inner room connected to the main room, and the yard in front of the door is pitifully small. Fortunately, it was quite clean after cleaning, and it is just the right size for two people to live in.

Festive red lanterns were hung in front of the doors of the main hall in the courtyard, and the word "囍" was pasted on several doors. The bed in the inner room was the one Wei Min often slept on. She put away the bedding on the bed and took out the big red quilt her father made for her and spread it on the bed.

The festive bright red quilt was embroidered with a pair of mandarin ducks playing in the water. It was embroidered by the old lady for her daughter stitch by stitch.

Touching the brand new quilt and smelling the clean sunshine scent on it, Wei Min seemed to see her father sitting on a low stool in front of the door in winter, basking in the gentle sunshine, embroidering mandarin ducks in his hands and saying to her: "Amin, you must be good to your husband when you get married."

Before leaving, Daddy had just finished embroidering the wedding quilt. He held her hand and said, "Daddy may not be able to see our Ah Min getting married, but don't worry, Daddy has prepared all the things for you... When you get married in the future, you must treat him well. It's not easy for men, and the women of our Wei family cannot be unfaithful and let him down..."

Dad was cared for by my mother all his life and lived a happy life. He experienced what it was like to be a husband who was loved by his wife. He also saw many husbands who were beaten and scolded by their wives when something went wrong at home. Before he died, the old man hoped that his two daughters could live a good life and have a harmonious family.

Wei Min thought of A'ruan whom he saw that day. She was wearing a sky-blue robe, with her long hair hanging down behind her. She lowered her head slightly, and stood there submissively, being led by someone. She was as docile as a toothless rabbit, with her long ears tucked in and letting people stroke her fur.

She would love a husband like this so much after marrying him that she would never let him suffer any injustice.

When Wei Luo came jumping in, Wei Min came back to his senses. He lowered his eyes to hide the expression in his eyes, lowered his head and took his little nephew out.

When passing by the table with peanuts, Wei Min grabbed a handful of peanuts and secretly stuffed them into Wei Luo's pocket, causing the little nephew to happily raise her hands to cover her surprised mouth, her eyes curved with joy, and whispered in her ear: "Mom said I can't eat it."

"Then let's not tell her." Wei Min smiled and touched Wei Luo's head.

Wei Luo immediately covered his pockets with joy and nodded repeatedly.

After two days of cleaning up the old house, the wedding day arrived in the blink of an eye.

When a poor family gets married, it naturally cannot be like the rich families who need to prepare for a month or so, and then have servants carry boxes of betrothal gifts and dowry, sit on tall horses, and lead the way to welcome the bride in a lively manner with suonas and trumpets.

If the two families are close to each other, they usually just set up a plate of firecrackers, a sedan chair carried by two people, and one or two tables of food and wine to invite relatives, friends, and neighbors to eat and drink, and that's it. If they were far away, they would need to borrow a donkey from others, tie a big red flower on the donkey's head and carry them back.

The Wei family and the Zhang family are separated by two villages, which is not far, but if you find two people to carry a sedan chair, it will still be a bit difficult to go back and forth.

Wei Min thought about it and decided to borrow a donkey from someone and lead the donkey to Zhang's house on the wedding day.

When she arrived, A'ruan was wearing a red wedding dress and a red veil and was helped out by her neighbors.

That neighbor had watched A'ruan grow up, and now seeing him getting married, he felt deeply moved.

I don’t know whether he fell into a happy nest or walked from one fire pit into another.

After all, they were not relatives. When the neighbor handed A'ruan's hand to Wei Min, his eyes were wet but he could not say a word of advice. If he said something that made others dislike him, poor A'ruan would be the one who would suffer in the future.

When the Zhang family got married, the whole family just leaned against the door frame and watched with squinted eyes. They didn't even go out. They were so cold and inhuman.

When Zhang saw Wei Min holding A'ruan's hand, she sneered sarcastically, spat out the melon seed shells in her mouth, turned around and went into the house to take out A'ruan's bag.

All of Aruan's dowry consisted of a cloth bag, which contained only a few of his own clothes.

Seeing Zhang's gloomy face, the neighbors were afraid that he would embarrass A'ruan on such a festive day, so they quickly took the bag from his hand and handed it to A'ruan.

While passing the cloth bag, the neighbor held A'ruan's hand tightly, lowered his voice, and said in a voice that only the two of them could hear, choking with sobs: "Take care of yourself. No matter what, life will still take its course."

As he spoke, he squeezed A'ruan's hand tightly, then turned around after a while and wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with his fingers.

The sound of firecrackers popped behind them. The auspicious time had arrived, and A Ruan was helped by Wei Min to sit on the donkey's back.

The donkey carried A'ruan away from the "home" that had raised him for twelve or thirteen years, and walked unsteadily in another direction.

Ah Ruan straightened her back, stared at the red veil swaying in front of her eyes with open eyes, slowly hugged the bundle in her arms with both hands, her heart was filled with mixed feelings, bitterness, sourness and astringency, but the only feeling missing was the sweetness of joy.

Getting married is nothing more than moving from one Zhang family to another "Zhang" family.

Even though his wife likes his appearance now and won't treat him coldly after knowing that he is a mute, life will not be easy after all.

In order to marry off A'ruan, the Zhang family never mentioned the fact that he was mute during the marriage discussion. Li Bing felt sorry for A'ruan and was afraid of hurting her, so he didn't mention this either. As for Sun, he didn't mention her either.

Yes, it was not until the wedding night that Wei Min pushed her down on the bed, and she realized that the man she married was actually a mute...

The author has something to say: Ah Ruan: (guilty face)

Wei Min: (horrified face) I've taken off my pants, don't tell me you're a woman...

Ah Ruan: ... (shakes his head)

Wei Min: (breathes a sigh of relief and presses on again) That’s okay. I thought I had to pull up my pants.

A Ruan: ...⊙?⊙! (Why don’t you play by the rules?)

I will be writing the copy tomorrow, I am so excited_(:зゝ∠)_
