Chapter 40: A Beast in Human Form
"Dad, Mom, why didn't you wake me up? I'm late for work."
Lao Lin: "It's incredible. You are not only the pillar of the family now, but also a celebrity. How dare a small person like me disturb the leader's rest?"
Aunt Lin: "That's right. If you talk too much, they'll say we're nosy. If you don't, they'll complain we don't care enough. Who can stand being so difficult to please?"
Jun Lan: "Alright, I was just in a bad mood yesterday and pissed you off for a bit. Is there any need to be so petty? Forget it. I'm going to work now. If you have anything to say, we can talk when I get back."
There are more and more people gathering at the entrance of the LaCrosse Hotel, but they are not guests, they are all paparazzi from gossip magazines.
Jun Lan covered her face and went straight to room 666.
Fortunately, Nangong came back. His return not only gave Junlan peace of mind, but also calmed the panicked employees.
Suddenly the morale of the entire hotel was boosted and it looked brand new.
Junlan: "Is it because I looked so photogenic yesterday that all the paparazzi came to take pictures of me and interview me today?"
Nangong: "If you don't believe me, you have to believe the mirror. Didn't you read the gossip magazine today?" He pointed at the gossip magazine on the stage and motioned Jun Lan to look.
The big headline read: "Hotel manager sacked after being caught in sex scandal."
When I opened it, I was shocked. It said that a famous young actress was having an affair with the married Wang Dafu, and was later caught by the actress' boyfriend, so he decided to kill her and hired someone to kill her.
"How is this possible? This is ridiculous." Jun Lan shouted.
Situ: "That's right, that little Miss Wu is just a regular at our restaurant, and Manager Wang is a little more familiar with her. Old Wang and his wife have a very good relationship, and besides, there's no way Miss Wu would fall for Old Wang."
"I mean, why do I look so ugly in the photo? Too ugly. This is not me at all." Jun Lan saw her own photo in an inconspicuous corner nearby. They called her an unknown spokesperson.
Situ was so angry that he said, "Are you listening to me?"
Jun Lan: "Of course I did, but haven't you heard the story of Lao Wang next door? We are not the police, so it's better not to jump to conclusions."
Nangong: "So you think what happened to Lao Wang was just a simple murder caused by jealousy?"
Jun Lan: "I'm just saying there's a possibility, but I'm actually more inclined to believe it's a vendetta, and the murderer is very likely someone from our hotel?"
Situ's eyes glared. "Are you saying we have a mole? Do you have any evidence? Otherwise, what's your basis for saying that?"
Jun Lan: "Reasonable suspicion logical analysis. That night, Yang Ning and I went to a small restaurant near the hotel for dinner. He said that everything was fine when he went to get the car, but just as we were leaving, we saw a police car approaching. This means that the incident happened around the time Yang Ning drove to the restaurant to pick me up. I calculated that it was only a 15-minute drive. It took me several months to figure out the whereabouts of the dozen or so entrances and exits in the hotel basement. The murderer was able to accurately know Manager Wang's working hours and successfully escape after the crime. I think it is very likely that he is one of our internal employees."
Nangong: "Well, that's a very reasonable analysis. Then who among us do you think is the most suspicious?"
Jun Lan shook her head. "That's what puzzles me. From what I understand, Manager Wang is a truly kind person. His subordinates absolutely adore him. And while he's known many people through work, none of them are complicated relationships, let alone those messy relationships you see in magazines. So if he's not a good person, then the Oscars definitely owe him a Best Actor award."
Situ: "Then the matter is back to a dead end. Who wants to kill such a decent person?"
Jun Lan: "We have to wait until he wakes up. We might get some clues if we ask him."
At this time, Situ's cell phone rang.
"Hello! Okay, I understand. Is it convenient for you to go visit the patient now? Oh! Okay, thank you."
Situ: "Lin Junlan, Niu Dali is awake, do you want to go see him?"
Jun Lan rushed out of Room 666 without saying a word.
Situ shouted after her: "The doctor told us not to stay in the hospital too long, as he just woke up."
Jun Lan rushed to the hospital and found Niu Dali lying on the bed with a tube in his throat and a pale face.
Jun Lan was feeling very sad at the moment, but in order to stabilize Niu Dali's emotions, she could only hold back her tears and said with a smile: "Brother Dali, you are awake."
Niu Dali opened his eyes, glanced at Jun Lan, and nodded reluctantly.
Dali's mother said, "You're so thoughtful! Thank you for visiting Dali. The doctor said the anesthetic hasn't worn off yet, and he's still very weak, so he can't speak. The police just came, but when they saw he couldn't answer questions, they had to leave."
Jun Lan: "The most important thing now is that Dali Ge gets better as soon as possible. I'll leave the case to the police."
Dali's mother sighed, pointed at Dali's broken hand, and whispered, "That's okay..." Then she secretly wiped away a tear.
Then he smiled and said, "But it's good that he's alive. Your company's boss is such a kind person. He sent Dali to such an advanced hospital and paid for his treatment. And that Situ also gave me a lot of money. Please thank them for me."
Jun Lan: "Brother Dali did this for the company. This is what we should do."
Dali's mother said, "Dali is lucky to have woken up so quickly. The other patient who was sent here with Dali is much more pitiful. He's still in critical condition. The doctor said if he doesn't wake up soon, he'll probably become a vegetable. His wife and children were crying miserably outside the ward yesterday."
"Then I'll go see him wherever he is now."
"He's still in the intensive care unit! His wife is waiting outside. If he has any news, please let me know. After all, that's the person my son risked his life to save. I hope he can be safe soon."
Jun Lan nodded, turned around and went to the intensive care unit.
Through the glass window, Jun Lan saw Wang Dafu inside, with instruments inserted all over his body. He was lying quietly on the bed, motionless and lifeless.
His wife, Mrs. Wang, was waiting outside like Junlan, staring at Wang Dafu inside through the glass window.
She seemed to have aged ten years overnight, and didn't look like a wealthy lady in her thirties at all. Her eyes were already red and swollen from crying, and there were still tears hanging in the corners of her eyes.
Jun Lan handed her a tissue and comforted her: "Mrs. Wang, don't be too sad. There is always a glimmer of hope. Manager Wang Dafu is a good man. Good people will have a peaceful life. How is he now? What did the doctor say?"
Mrs. Wang said, "Thank you for your comfort. You must be a colleague at his company hotel. I can only visit him for an hour a day. Yesterday, when I went to see him, he would move his fingers in response to my calls, but today he has no reaction at all. What else can the doctor say? They've done what they need to do. The rest is waiting for a miracle."
