☆401. Chapter 401: The Hunchback

Chapter 401 Hunchback Uncle

The hunchbacked uncle: "Girl, are you from out of town?"

Xu Lin nodded.

The hunchback pointed to the "small peak" protruding behind him and said with a smile, "Maybe it's because of my health! The villagers think I'm unlucky, and to save face for the group, they've expressly forbidden me from setting up a stall in the market. So I can only fend for myself in this remote corner."

Xu Lin couldn't help but feel compassion and said indignantly: "How could they do this?"

The hunchbacked man looked at Xu Lin and Liu Jian meaningfully and asked tentatively, "Why would you, outsiders, come here to patronize me? Did you read something on Weibo and come here out of pity for me?"

Liu Jian: "Of course not."

He told the hunchbacked uncle the same rhetoric that Xu Lin had used to deal with the middle-aged man today.

After listening to this, the hunchbacked uncle sighed and said, "So it's the young couple who ran away because of a family dispute. Don't look at me as a poor old man with no one to rely on now. I also had loved ones when I was young. I have seen many cases like yours. This is not a place for outsiders like you to stay. You two should leave as soon as possible!"

Xu Lin: "Who would want to be bald if they have hair? We really have nowhere else to go, so we came here out of desperation!"

Liu Jian took advantage of the situation and said, "Uncle, it's getting dark now. This place is so remote. It's really inconvenient for me to look for a place to stay with a woman. I can't let her sleep in the wilderness. Can you please take us in for one night? Just one night is fine. We don't care. You can even let us sleep on your floor or next to the pigpen. We will leave tomorrow morning without anyone noticing. We will never let the villagers know that you took us in and made things difficult for you."

The hunchbacked uncle couldn't bear to watch the person die without helping, so he could only nod.

"Don't be disgusted when you get to my house!"

Xu Lin glanced at Liu Jian, as if she saw hope.

When he saw that the uncle seemed to be packing up his stall, Liu Jian quickly squatted down to help clean up.

Then the three of them slowly disappeared in the last rays of setting sun.

Although the two were mentally prepared, they couldn't help but be shocked by the situation when they arrived at the hunchback uncle's house.

In fact, this cannot be considered a home at all, not even a place to shelter from the wind and rain.

The four walls of the house were already in danger of collapse, and there were only a few tiles left on the roof. It was almost impossible to see the stars and the moon in the sky.

Seeing the visitor's confusion, the hunchback said embarrassedly, "I've already told you I'm a broke man, but you didn't believe me and insisted on going home with me. Now you're disappointed, aren't you?"

Xu Lin said awkwardly, "It's nothing, actually. Uncle, we're already very grateful for taking you in. How could we dislike your family? But then again, uncle, with your conditions, you should be able to apply for government funding. Didn't the village officials ignore you?"

The hunchbacked man said, "How could there be nothing? They devoured all my housing renovation funds and subsistence allowance. I really hate them."

Liu Jian: "As it should be. Don't worry, once we know about this, we will definitely take care of it to the end. We will do our best to seek justice for you."

He pulled Xu Lin aside and whispered, "These people are so despicable. Every household lives in a Western-style building and keeps foreign dogs, but they won't even provide for a disabled old man. When we get back, we must find someone to teach these troublemakers a lesson."

Xu Lin clapped his hands and whispered back, "Of course. Let's get down to business first."

The hunchbacked uncle opened the wardrobe which looked tattered and moldy, took out a decent quilt and spread it on the floor.

"What are you two whispering about? Come over here and help me make the bed on the floor! You need to leave early tomorrow morning, otherwise if they see you, I don't know what they'll accuse me of."

Xu Lin quickly took the quilt and said with a smile, "Okay, okay, thank you for your help, uncle."

The quilt was new, beautiful, and had a sun-kissed aroma. It was clear at a glance that the hunchback uncle treasured it immensely. Although Xu Lin and the others normally wouldn't appreciate such items, comparing it to the surroundings made it clear that this quilt was the finest piece of furniture in the hunchback uncle's home.

Liu Jian: "Uncle, why did you leave the best things for us? You should keep such a good quilt for yourself!"

The hunchbacked uncle said: "This quilt was originally made by my mother for my future marriage. Unfortunately, I was not ambitious enough and never got married. It seems that I have no use for such a good thing. I will leave it to you young people! I have never used this thing once. It is brand new. You can use it to sleep without worry."

Hearing this, Xu Lin's nose couldn't help but feel a little sour. What a nice uncle! Although he was disabled, he was willing to give away his precious things to others. In Xu Lin's heart, his figure was certainly much taller than those who were sweet-mouthed but treacherous.

She wiped her red eyes. Although she was touched, she still had to ask the question.

Xu Lin took out Dingxiang's photo and showed it to the hunchbacked uncle.

"Uncle, please help me find someone. Do you know this woman?"

The hunchbacked uncle placed the photo under the dim light and examined it carefully for a long time. After a while, he said, "Isn't this Erniu's wife? I haven't seen her for a long time. Why are you asking about her? Who are you?"

Liu Jian: "Uncle, don't get me wrong. We are really good people. We love to do good deeds and volunteer, and often participate in various volunteer and social work services. One time, we ran into this poor crazy woman wandering the street. She looked like she was homeless and often slept on the street. It was really pitiful, so we arranged for her to be arranged in a shelter. I heard that she had appeared in your village before, so I stopped by to see her."

Hunchback: "Where did you see her?"

Xu Lin: "In the city!"

The hunchbacked man was shocked. "Why would a woman like her walk such a long way? How long would it take to get from the city to here? This can't be considered a quick trip, right?"

Xu Lin: "Just consider it a good deed. If you know her or her family, please tell us so we can complete our investigation and unite their family!"

The hunchbacked uncle sighed and said, "Is Mrs. Erniu okay now?"

Liu Jian: "As for her, she doesn't have to worry about food, clothing, and shelter anymore, but she's gone insane and has lost all consciousness. She hasn't even been lucid for a minute. But after all, she's still a living person. She must have some relatives or friends in this world, right? I don't believe that no one cares about her."

The hunchbacked uncle suddenly knelt down and kowtowed to Xu Lin and the others, begging for mercy: "I beg you not to let Erniu know about this, otherwise Erniu's wife's life will be even more difficult."

Xu Lin quickly helped the hunchbacked uncle up and asked, "Uncle, please don't be like this. We young people can't accept such a gift. Take your time and tell us what you have to say."
