The next morning, the An family got up early and started preparing for Daya's wedding. Aunt Song was in charge of dressing her daughter in the room.
Mrs. Song touched her daughter's face and said, "Once you marry into a family, you will be someone else's daughter-in-law. You must be filial to your father-in-law and mother-in-law, and get along well with your son-in-law."
Daya's eyes were moist. "I know, mother. Don't worry. You and father are doing well at home."
Song thought about it and felt uneasy. Her daughter wasn't strong enough. "Mother knows that as the eldest sister in the family, you are the most sensible. You always give way to your younger brothers and sisters."
"But my husband's family is different from my own. You can't keep putting up with it when you go out, or people will think you're easy to bully. If you put up with it from the beginning, you'll never be able to turn things around later. They'll think it's natural for them to bully you."
"If you encounter any problems in the Lin family after you get married, don't tolerate it unless you've done anything wrong. If they dare to harass you, go back to your parents' home and let them handle the situation for you."
Daya choked up and said, "Mom, I understand. I will listen to you."
Song was still teaching her daughter how to make a living in the Lin family when she heard the noisy sounds of music and drums outside.
"My uncle is here! My uncle is here! Da Ya, come out quickly!"
Daya wiped the tears from her eyes. Song checked her makeup and hair accessories, put a red veil on her, and then led her out of the room.
Lin Dawu, dressed in festive groom's suit, walked into the An family to the sound of trumpets, looking at Daya at the other end with a silly smile on his dark skin.
Lin Dawu looked at Daya's figure, touched the back of his head embarrassedly, turned around and said respectfully to the old couple of the An family: "Grandpa, Grandma."
The old couple looked at him with satisfaction and nodded.
Lin Dawu greeted the An family one by one, went through the local custom of picking up the bride, and finally walked to Daya's side.
An Jingzhi wore his most elegant long gown today. He looked like a scholar, full of pride and integrity.
He walked to Daya's side and bent his back, "Sister Daya, I will marry you today!"
Under the red veil, Daya held back her tears and gently stroked her brother's back. An Jingzhi carried Daya steadily out of the room and walked to the side of the sedan chair.
Today, he was in charge of escorting Daya to her wedding with Uncle An. Originally, the two elders in the family should have been the ones to escort Daya, but An Jingzhi had a great reputation, so having him escort her would show the An family's regard for Daya.
This was also proposed by An Jingzhi himself. Song agreed immediately and sighed in her heart that she had indeed wronged Jingzhi.
The wedding procession arrived at the Lin family with music and drums. On the way, Lin Dawu was a little afraid to look at An Jingzhi. His brother-in-law was so imposing that he was frightened.
When the elders of the Lin family heard that An Jingzhi had come to escort the bride, they quickly rose to greet him and privately sent for the village chief and other elders. Their family was just an ordinary villager in Linjia Village, and An Jingzhi was a student. They didn't know how to entertain a scholar, so they could only ask the village chief and the elders for help.
The Lin family first sent the bride into the room, and then quickly asked An Jingzhi and Uncle An to sit down.
Uncle An is not good at greeting people. He just responds to whatever Father Lin says, and the atmosphere is quite harmonious.
Mother Lin spoke to An Jingzhi enthusiastically, "Jingzhi, why did you come in person? You said this without telling me in advance. Please bear with me if the hospitality was not good enough."
"Today is my elder sister's wedding day. As her younger brother, of course I have to come. No matter how busy I am, I have to squeeze out time. Otherwise, won't my in-laws look down on my elder sister? My elder sister has treated me so well since I was a child. How could I bear to see her suffer any injustice?" An Jingzhi said with a smile.
Lin's mother heard his words hint at something, but she didn't know if he said it on purpose. When the An family said An Jingzhi was too busy and had too much schoolwork to attend to the wedding, they had been wondering, "Could it be that Daya's relationship with the family is not good at all? At least not with her cousin."
When they first chose Daya as their bride, their family was actually thinking of An Jingzhi, hoping to benefit from his good fortune in the future. Coincidentally, after the marriage was finalized, they received news that An Jingzhi had passed the imperial examination, which made them even happier. This was a great early bet! If they were to propose marriage now, they probably wouldn't even be able to get on the doorstep. Many people in Linjia Village envied their family.
She had something to hide, and now when she heard An Jingzhi's words, she felt guilty, "How could it be? How could our family let Daya be wronged? I like Daya."
An Jingzhi glanced at her with a half-smile, "I've heard from my aunt that the Lin family is a kind family and would definitely not do anything like secretly torturing their daughter-in-law. It's just that as a younger brother, I have a good relationship with my sister, so it's inevitable that I overthink things. I hope Aunt Lin will forgive me."
Mother Lin felt that the An family's boy had eyes that could see through people's hearts. After just a few moments of talking to him, she felt uncomfortable all over. She had originally thought about establishing a good relationship with An Jing first, so that it would be easier to ask for help later. She had not expected this to happen. Mother Lin was fidgeting and was about to find an excuse to leave when she noticed Village Chief Lin walking in from the door.
Mother Lin quickly sat up and pulled Village Chief Lin to An Jingzhi's seat. "Oh, the Village Chief is here. Come in, come in!"
Before Lin's mother started to introduce him, Village Chief Lin knew who An Jingzhi was, seeing him standing in the crowd in a long gown with fair complexion and handsome features.
Looking at An Jingzhi enthusiastically, he said, "Oh, this is Daya's younger brother Jingzhi, right? I am the village chief of Linjia Village."
An Jingzhi stood up and bowed politely, "Junior greets Village Chief Lin."
"Oh, I don't deserve it. You are a scholar with honors. How can an old man like me be worthy of this?" He is worthy of being a student at such a young age. He knows etiquette and is not arrogant.
