Chapter 1: Scum on the Road to Escape 1

During the Daye Dynasty, in the tenth year of Shentai, there was a severe drought in the north.

An Jingzhi, who had just come out of the system, felt nothing except hunger. All he saw were people moving slowly and with numb eyes.

If he wasn't one of them, he would have suspected that these people were zombies. After all, these people were too similar to the zombies in the mission world he had visited before!

I avoided people and went to the nearby woods to secretly take out the enhancer from the space and drank it. My stomach finally felt better.

It was called a forest, but in reality, only the trunks of the trees remained. The leaves had been eaten clean by the refugees around them, and much of the bark had been peeled off.

The things in the space were still stored in his previous mission world, which was an interstellar world where humans lived on nutrients. He had almost eaten up all the normal food stored in the space.

Feeling that his strength was slowly returning, An Jingzhi began to check the memories of the original owner.

He was lazy and greedy and relied on his parents to dig for food in the soil. He lived with his brother, sister-in-law and the whole family. In the last years of the dynasty, there was a three-year drought and no harvest. He also encountered the court's conscription of young men into the army, so his family had to flee.

After fleeing famine for a month, there is not much food left. Now they have started eating leaves to fill their stomachs. In a few days, I am afraid that they will not even be able to get tree bark.

"Son, where have you been?" As soon as An Jingzhi came out of the woods, he was grabbed by his mother.

This team is a mess with all kinds of people. Since a few days ago, I haven't seen any corpses lying on the roadside. Usually I see a lot of bones and piles of fire near the trees.

It’s easy to imagine what would happen if I walked alone now.

When it was time for dinner, An's mother searched for An Jingzhi for a long time but couldn't find him, and she began to panic.

I wanted to go into the nearby woods to look for him, and then I saw An Jingzhi coming out.

"I'm just going to the woods to see if there's anything to eat." An Jingzhi received the original owner's memories, and felt very close to An's mother when he looked at her.

An's father and mother had three sons, but they loved the youngest son the most. The original owner was born prematurely and was weak and sickly since childhood. As a result, he was spoiled by An's father and mother and became a farmer's son who was lazy, did not know the difference between grains, and was not even strong enough to tie a chicken.

The two elders were eventually abandoned by their original owner on the road of fleeing famine and were tragically eaten by refugees.

The luggage on the way to escape famine was pushed by the eldest and second brothers. He just stood by and watched from beginning to end, and even wanted to compete with his nephews and nieces for a seat.

An's mother wasn't surprised to see her son's empty hands. He had already eaten all the food, so there was nothing left.

I returned to the team and took the "porridge" handed to me by my sister-in-law Zhao. It looked gray and I didn't know what was in it.

Looking around, he found that his weight was about the same as An's father and his two brothers, while the others' weight was only half of theirs.

Seeing An Jingzhi not moving for a long time, she thought he was unhappy. After hesitating for a moment, An's mother carefully explained: "Son, we don't have much food anymore, so we have to make do with what we have. When we get there, I'll buy you some proper food."

An Jingzhi looked at his mother and thought that he disliked the "porridge" in the bowl and was unhappy. He explained carefully and felt a little uncomfortable.

I watched as everyone else around me finished their drink carefully.

Several nephews and nieces stared at his bowl.

"What is this? I don't want to eat it, you guys eat it. I just found something to eat in the woods." An Jingzhi pretended to be disgusted and pushed the bowl to An's mother.

He knew that except for being a little partial to himself, An's father and mother treated everyone else equally, and if she gave money to An's mother, she would definitely share it with everyone.

Mother An and Father An looked at each other with deep emotion. How could they not know if there was any food in the woods? They had already searched all the places around here.

Looking at the bowl of porridge that his son pushed in front of him, he knew in his heart that this was his son's filial piety and he didn't want his parents to go hungry.

In the past, everyone in the village said that their youngest son was unfilial. He relied on his parents, brother and sister-in-law at such a young age, did nothing, was idle all day long, and caused trouble everywhere. He would definitely not be reliable in the future.

What did they know? Their son wasn't just idle, he wasn't working. He had been weak since childhood and couldn't do farm work, so he went to the county town every day to find work.

But how easy is it to find work these days? And I can't just rely on physical labor, so I have to go out and about more often, get to know more people.

The original owner was actually a lazy bum, never working, going to the county town just to hang out with his frivolous friends. But he was a master at pretending, and every time he came home, he feigned guilt, hating his own poor health. After such a performance, how could his parents dare to say anything to him? They only blamed themselves for not being able to live up to expectations and give their son a future and a healthy body.

An's mother tried to persuade him for a while, but when she saw that An Jingzhi was determined, she shared the food with everyone. She also had half a vegetable steamed bun in her arms, which she would give to her youngest son if he was hungry.

After the break, everyone started on their way again. They didn't know where to go, as they had never traveled far in their lives. They just followed the crowd. Later, someone suggested going north to Dingxiang City, where there was no drought, and everyone followed them until now.

An Jingzhi knew that even if they went to Dingxiang, these people would not survive long. There was indeed no drought there, but there were still wars and peasant uprisings.

I took a look at a carriage in the middle of the front. It was a family that had suddenly joined the refugees a few days ago. Anyone who still had a carriage at this time must have a good family background and should have some food. It was you.

"Mom, I'm going to go take a look ahead and get some information."

"There's nothing interesting to see ahead. Just go ahead." Mother An looked at her son's back and swallowed the words of refusal she wanted to say. In this kind of world, she and the old man didn't know how long they could live. They couldn't protect Jingzhi for a lifetime. If he didn't learn to take responsibility now, what would happen to his youngest son after they were gone?
