Zhao Quansheng was hanging on to his last breath. He was unconscious for longer periods of time than he was awake every day. His body was getting weaker and weaker, to the point where he could hardly eat on his own.
When he woke up again, he heard that Zhang Dacheng had started recruiting soldiers without his consent. He was angry but helpless.
He asked his wife, "Where is An Jingzhi?"
Zhao Quansheng's wife said, "Besides visiting you three times a day, he spends his days patrolling the city gates. Ever since you fell ill, the situation in Daliang Prefecture has been getting worse and worse. People are causing trouble every day. If he hadn't brought people to deal with it, I'm afraid it would have been chaos long ago."
A hint of relief flashed in Zhao Quansheng's eyes. No matter how good a brother is, he is nothing in the face of power.
He was still alive, but Zhang Dacheng, his brother of more than ten years, ignored him and recruited soldiers without permission.
If he really died, would the other party spare his son's life?
In comparison, the concubine that Lou Sanma left to An Jingzhi is still alive and well. He has inquired about it and found out that An Jingzhi has never touched her or forced her. He just treats her politely as his sister-in-law.
He married his wife and children before the uprising. After the uprising, his family became bigger and bigger. Although he married many concubines, he valued his wife and eldest son the most. Naturally, he hoped to find a reliable person to entrust them to.
"What do you think of An Jingzhi?" Zhao Quansheng asked.
His wife thought for a moment and said, "Logically speaking, Zhang Dacheng has been with you for more than ten years. I should support him."
"But now I understand that this man is different now that he has power." She glanced at Zhao Quansheng.
Although her husband still respected her, it was only because she gave birth to his eldest son.
There was no love between the two of them any longer, and it was all up to their son to defend his rights.
She didn't expect her son to take over Zhao Quansheng's position, she just hoped that her son could grow up safely one day.
A trace of guilt flashed across Zhao Quansheng's face.
When they heard that he was about to die, all his favorite concubines packed up their bags and ran away.
The one who took care of him by his bed was his old and ugly wife whom he despised.
His wife continued, "I haven't had much contact with An Jingzhi, but I talk to his wife from time to time."
"Chen Xianyi is very good at dealing with people. Which of the wives of your brothers is not on good terms with her?"
“The brothers who followed you out and died outside, their homes were in chaos, and it was Shen Xianyi who brought people to help.”
“Even Zhang Dacheng’s wife has a good relationship with Shen Xianyi.”
"You probably don't know this yet, but to be honest, An Jingzhi is half a son-in-law."
She briefly recounted the agreement between An Jingzhi and the Shen family.
He sighed, "Now this An Jingzhi is considered a capable man, but when has he ever treated Shen Xianyi badly? All of you men have wives and concubines around you, but he is the only one who keeps himself clean and has an extremely loving relationship with Shen."
"Let's talk about business, why are you saying this?" Zhao Quansheng said weakly.
"I'm telling you this because I want you to know that An Jingzhi is definitely not an ungrateful person."
"He is so respectful to the concubines entrusted to him by Lou Sanma. It is obvious that this man is worthy of your true trust."
"If you really want to find someone to take over your position, I hope it's An Jingzhi."
"If nothing else, at least your son can grow up safely in this man's hands, and your Zhao family will not be extinct."
Zhao Quansheng thought about it for a long time, and kept thinking about him falling into a coma again.
Originally, he proposed that the two men take Wang Ce's head just as a test. He didn't have much time left, so there was no way he could wait for them to kill Wang Ce.
He just wanted to see how the two of them would handle the matter.
Zhang Dacheng disappointed him, and An Jingzhi's actions made him more determined.
Zhao Quansheng's wife's words finally made Zhao Quansheng make up his mind.
After being in a coma for a day and a night, he could feel that he would not survive the night.
He asked someone to help him clean up and put on his clothes, and then he was carried to sit in the seat in the general's mansion.
Almost all the people under his command who could come were called over, including Zhang Dacheng and An Jingzhi.
Sitting on the chair, Zhao Quansheng had to rely on his wife for support, otherwise he would fall down at any time.
He spoke after everyone was present.
"I called you all here today to find someone to take my position."
"I've told An Jingzhi and Zhang Dacheng before that whoever can bring Wang Ce's head here will get to take my place."
"I've seen everything you've said and done recently."
Zhang Dacheng felt a little uneasy.
"I'm afraid I won't make it through tonight. I probably won't see the day when Wang Ce's head falls to the ground. I will pass on the position tonight. I called you here so that you can witness it together."
"Brother..." Zhang Dacheng didn't know what to say.
"Okay, wait until I'm done."
He waved his hand, and the entire City Lord's Mansion was instantly surrounded by soldiers. Everyone was a little panicked and talked a lot.
Only An Jingzhi stood there calmly, while Shi Ziming looked around vigilantly.
"Get him." Zhao Quansheng said in a low voice.
Zhang Dacheng and his confidants were immediately captured by the soldiers.
"Brother! Brother, what do you mean?"
Zhang Dacheng and the people around him were shouting and yelling.
"Actually, the question of who can take Wang Ce's head is just an excuse for me to test you."
He looked at Zhang Dacheng with disappointment, "Dacheng, you and I have known each other for more than ten years, and you have disappointed me so much."
