Chapter 4: The Doctoral Student Who Betrayed His Country

Yang Ting'an came to the United States when he was in his forties. Now, twenty years later, his hair has turned gray.

But his back remained straight. Twenty years of infamy did not defeat him, nor did the feeling of not being understood overwhelm him.

After separating from An Jingzhi, he came to his own residence. Unlike An Jingzhi, he had become an American citizen early on and had not made any particularly outstanding contributions. He was just like other ordinary researchers, so the agents here did not specifically monitor him.

He went to the study and wrote a letter on the paper with a fountain pen.

Taking the opportunity to take out the trash, he crumpled the letter into a ball, put it in the trash bag, and threw it out.

Not long after, a homeless man in tattered clothes came to the trash can and rummaged through it.

After finding the ball of paper, he calmly hid it in his sleeve, pretended to search for it for a while, and then imitated other homeless people to find something usable before slowly leaving.

"Old Yang has passed on the news."

"The steam catapult takeoff system for aircraft carriers has entered a critical moment."

"An Jingzhi seems to be able to solve the cylinder's airtightness problem, but I don't know why he suddenly took leave and left the laboratory."

"Old Yang said that if the cylinder sealing problem is completely solved, then the American aircraft carriers will be equipped with this latest steam catapult system, and their combat effectiveness will be further improved."

"This damn bastard, why don't you send someone to tie him back?"

"Don't say such useless words. Even we have to be careful when operating on their territory. It was okay before that they didn't take us seriously, but now it seems that they have been taken seriously by the institute."

"Can he be without agents around to protect his safety?"

"Send the message back quickly."

"An!" An Jingzhi just walked out of the library and saw Jonah running out of breath.

The other person looked out of breath and supported his knees with his hands, trying hard to breathe.

Foreigners have a stronger body odor. After running at high speed, even thick clothes can hardly block the odor on their bodies.

An Jingzhi took two steps back in disgust and covered his mouth and nose with his right hand. "You should change your clothes and take a shower, Jonah."

Jonah: "..." If it wasn't for looking for you, would I do this?

"An, as your friend, I know you're in a bad mood. I can't sleep well or eat well."

"An, can you just tell me how to make you feel better?"

An Jingzhi thought about how to get Jonah away, as he was the agent sent to monitor him.

If he drove Jonah away and broke off his friendship with him, someone else would come, so it would be better to stick to the one in front of him.

"I told you last time that I was a little homesick."

"Do you think I can go home if I quit my job at the institute?"

"Absolutely not!" Jonah retorted excitedly.

If the other party quits his job at the institute, will he still have a good ending? !

Seeing that An Jingzhi seemed a little unhappy, he hurried to make amends, "Even if you quit your job at the institute, you definitely can't go back."

"It's not that I'm restricting your freedom, but it's the rule. Everyone who enters the institute has signed a relevant agreement. You haven't forgotten, An?"

"Of course I haven't forgotten." An Jingzhi said with a gloomy expression, "I was just saying it."

Jonah breathed a sigh of relief, feeling relieved that he no longer had the urge to return to China.

"How can China be as prosperous as the United States? There aren't so many skyscrapers there, right?"

"I remember you said that before coming here, the only time you could eat well was during the Chinese New Year."

"After coming to the United States, no matter what you want to eat, can you satisfy it?"

Jonah said in a gentle and persuasive manner: "The reason you miss home is not because you want to go back to your country, but because you only miss your family."

"I promise you, as long as you can persevere and complete this experiment, I will find a way to bring your family over to reunite with you, and you can live a good life together. How about that?"

He looked at An Jingzhi with an excited expression, then shook his head.

"Are you dissatisfied?"

"I certainly hope my mother and grandmother can come over."

"But that would be too selfish of me. They've lived in China their whole lives and definitely won't be able to adapt here."

The original owner's grandmother was born into a wealthy family and later joined the Red Army. She had bound feet at the time. However, even such a woman with bound feet was as good as any man in charging and fighting on the battlefield.

Later, the country was stable and the original owner's grandmother retired from the army. She led the workers in production and continued to contribute to the motherland.

The original owner only has one daughter in this life, her mother.

The original owner's mother was raised alone by the original owner's grandmother. She was educated to be very patriotic and had a strong and resolute character.

The original owner secretly contacted his family, but all the messages he sent fell on deaf ears.

If they knew that the original owner not only wanted to commit treason herself but also wanted to bring them along, they would definitely have acted without hesitation even if they were their own sons and grandsons.

"How could that be? Don't they like to live a good life?"

"My grandmother was a veteran of the Red Army."

After An Jingzhi finished speaking, Jonah shut up.

As an agent, he collected a lot of information about the country across the sea.

"They're too stubborn," An Jingzhi said, "but they're my family after all. If I finish my lab experiments, can you let me go back once?"

If it wasn't finished, there might still be a chance to go back. Now that the experiment was complete, could they let An Jingzhi go back? At least not before they were sure that he had no second thoughts.

But in order to appease the other party, Jonah assured without hesitation: "Of course, you are free."

An Jingzhi sneered in his heart. He could naturally hear that Jonah was trying to evade him, but it didn't matter.

He pretended to be happy and said, "I knew that the United States would definitely not restrict my freedom in life."

Jonah said with a sincere look in his eyes: "Yes, the United States is a free country."

After seeing An Jingzhi return to work in the laboratory, Jonah's boss finally felt relieved.

"Well done. Keep watching him. I've already let others take over your other tasks. Your most important task now is to keep an eye on him."

"Let him feel the warmth of us Americans and forget about that backward China."

An Jingzhi always makes some useful suggestions every day when he goes to the laboratory to work.

Every day when he got home from get off work, he would meet Jonah by chance. Jonah would enthusiastically invite him to dinner. They usually ate out, but this time he invited him home.

Looking at the table full of delicious Chinese dishes, Jonah said happily, "I know you miss home, but everything has to wait until it's over."

"As your friend, I've come up with an idea. The dishes on this table were made by a chef from Chinatown. I heard he's a renowned chef for state banquets in China. You can try them and see how they taste."
