As evening fell, another round of arguments erupted in the courtyard.
After her fever subsided and she took a nap, Aunt Zhu went straight to the Wang family's house demanding an explanation and compensation.
Widow Wang went to work. Her family dared not take leave, because every day she missed a day of work meant one less day of pay. The whole family depended on her for support. Only Widow Wang was at home; the three brothers had long since disappeared.
Aunt Zhu sat down directly in front of the Wang family's door. "Everyone, please be the judge. I suffered so much just for going to the toilet today. Who is it because of them? Just because they said a few words about stealing, I was retaliated against like this. Is there no justice in this world?"
Old Mrs. Wang was not to be outdone. She refused to admit that the three brothers had pushed Aunt Zhu down the slope, refused to pay compensation, and even demanded that Aunt Zhu compensate the three brothers, because they were the ones who were pushed down by Aunt Zhu.
Both women had their own arguments and refused to give in, but it was clear that Aunt Zhu had the upper hand.
Old Mrs. Wang was suddenly in a difficult position. She knew that Aunt Zhu was not someone to be trifled with, but she did not expect her to be so unyielding and aggressive.
She looked at Aunt Zhu, hoping she would let it go, otherwise her grandson would be branded a thief. Actually, this was just Aunt Wang's self-righteousness; she thought her children were perfect, but she didn't realize that nobody around her liked her three children.
Although the three brothers are enviable, no one likes these three kids. Everyone knows they're petty thieves.
Although they don't handle large sums of money, just petty theft and robbing children, it's enough to make everyone disgusted. If it weren't for Old Lady Wang and Wang Meifen having some "ability" and being good at performing, and having a "thug" Qin Fen, their family would have been slapped in the face long ago. Now they've pushed an old man into a latrine, which is really going too far.
The two were still arguing when people started returning from get off work one after another, and the courtyard was once again crowded with people. Even the smell of "gold" in the air couldn't stop everyone from wanting to watch the excitement.
Widow Wang also returned. Seeing the scene, she was in a dilemma. She knew in her heart that it was her son's fault this time, and she also knew that the people in the compound might not let it go easily. But she really didn't want to compensate, didn't want to admit it, and didn't want her son to bear the reputation of a thief who disrespected the elderly.
Aunt Zhu was in the right and wouldn't back down. Although the three brothers did receive a real punishment—falling into the latrine—she also fell in, losing all face. Everyone said that a reprimand would suffice, and the matter would be dropped. But setting aside the theft and revenge in Xuyi, this act of ambushing and pushing an elderly woman into the latrine in the women's restroom demanded an explanation.
This is indeed an indisputable fact. If, as Aunt Wang said, the three men fell into the women's restroom, it would be inexplicable that the three men fell into the latrine.
Finally, Aunt Yuan stepped forward. "Alright, I think this is better. Aunt Zhu really suffered, and ultimately, your three sons bear some responsibility for this. From any perspective, you should give Aunt Zhu an explanation. Aunt Zhu, everyone knows you're upset about what happened, but they all fell too. Just give the younger generation some face. Let's all compromise. Wang family, you give Aunt Zhu some money as compensation for what she suffered today, okay?"
Wang Meifen was about to agree when Old Mrs. Wang immediately grabbed her hand and began to speak, “This whole thing is our fault. The children are young, the perfect age for teasing cats and dogs. They say even dogs hate seven or eight-year-olds, and my three are all around that age. Who would have thought they’d cause such trouble, and the children are terrified. But my three precious children have already been punished. You all know our family’s circumstances; only Meifen works, and we live hand to mouth, eating meager meals. I really… I really…”
As he spoke, he began to cry, and when Widow Wang saw this, she also started sobbing, which broke the hearts of Qin Fen and his son.
Qin Fen quickly chimed in, "That's right, Aunt Zhu, Aunt Yuan, let it go. Just apologize. They didn't suffer any loss. Their family is already so pitiful."
Aunt Yuan was so angry she didn't want to talk anymore, but Aunt Zhu wasn't about to let it go. "Pah! You two, mother and daughter-in-law, got your fair skin from eating chaff and wild vegetables? Those three scoundrels, did they grow up eating chaff and wild vegetables? Who knows how many men they've been hooking up with to support you two?" Aunt Zhu was furious, especially after being poked in the heart by Old Woman Wang last night, and now she just wanted to retaliate.
Then, pointing at Qin Fen, he cursed, "And you damned bastard, you deserve to never find a wife in your life, you shameless, despicable dog, you'll really be stuck in a widow's den every day..."
Aunt Zhu was verbally abusing Qin Fen, and Old Man Qin was not happy to listen. After bullying Wang Xiaomei, he came to bully his son. Is this how people behave?
He said, "Enough already! You're no good yourself. Besides, you're perfectly fine now, yet you're cursing so much and still going to the hospital. Who knows what's wrong with you? Are you trying to extort money from people now? This isn't the first time you've done this. What are you pretending for?"
Aunt Zhu was so angry she nearly fainted. "Who are you trying to extort money from?! You shameless bastard! I knew you and Old Lady Wang weren't on good terms. Your whole family is insane, always being used as pawns. I bet your family will die out sooner or later. You son of a bitch..."
Old Man Qin's arrival drove Aunt Zhu completely insane. Like a mad dog, she unleashed a torrent of insults, viciously cursing the Qin father and son, and even more so the Wang family, using extremely vile language. Old Man Qin, subjected to the insults, retaliated fiercely. The two exchanged insults about each other's ancestors, spitting everywhere.
Everyone was completely absorbed in the watch, occasionally chiming in with a few sarcastic remarks. They were thoroughly enjoying themselves, and after a long day at work, they no longer felt tired or hungry.
