Chapter 37 Liu Aidang is in love

Meanwhile, the Liu family could hear arguments in the tenement building every day, one family arguing about being sent to the countryside or another about work.

Now, the forced relocation to the countryside has brought all the superficial kinship between families to the surface, making it clear who is favored and valued more within the family.

Liu's mother is now very glad that she gave the job to her youngest son back then. If she had given it to him now, her eldest daughter-in-law and youngest son would definitely have fought.

Now, Liu's mother is the most proud person to take her son out for a walk every day; their family doesn't have any worries about going to the countryside at all. Even if they were to go to the countryside, it's still a long way off.

Liu Aidang also started dating. His girlfriend works at a meat processing plant and has a regular job, but she's a pig butcher because she's very strong, just like her father.

This is no problem for Liu's mother. She would prefer the girl to be straightforward and generous, but she would be annoyed if the girl were as scheming as her eldest daughter-in-law.

So Liu's mother was cheerful every day, as the saying goes, "a happy occasion puts one in good spirits." But now almost every household is worried, so she didn't want to cause trouble and went out less often.

As July arrived, the weather became increasingly hot, especially these past few days with alternating sunshine and rain, making it feel like being in a sauna—both stuffy and hot.

It just so happened that Yu Qianhe had to work overtime again this weekend, so Liu Yun packed up the triplets and gave them to Yu's mother. She went to her apartment to organize things. Since she had told Yu's parents to come over for dinner, Liu Yun came out early to cook dinner, but then she got her period.

After a long, tiring day, it's hot and stuffy, and I'm on my period. Nowadays, there are no sanitary napkins. The current menstrual products for women are rectangular paper towels that look like toilet paper. They're pink, and you have to tie a menstrual belt around them. The absorbency and moisture retention of these paper towels are very limited, so you have to change them frequently. They're also tied up tightly, which makes it hot and stuffy.

You know, when she first transmigrated, she couldn't even accept the outhouse, but she still hasn't accepted this. The happiest thing for her during her ten months of pregnancy was not having her period, but she completely broke down when she started having lochia after giving birth.

When I read historical novels, they said that sanitary napkins already existed in that era, but they were only available at Friendship Stores. However, there are no Friendship Stores here, and she couldn't get any remittance coupons. When Yu Qian went to Shanghai on a business trip, she specifically asked him to go to Friendship Store to look for them, but they were nowhere to be found.

Liu Yun was on the verge of a breakdown, but all she could do was change her pants, put on some tissue paper and a menstrual pad, and continue cooking.

After finishing her meal, taking a shower, and putting the child to sleep, Liu Yun lay sprawled on the bed like a salted fish, completely motionless. She had just changed the toilet paper, so lying there for a while would be fine.

The clothes weren't washed, the dishes weren't washed, but she didn't want to move anymore. She was so tired, physically tired, and mentally tired too.

As soon as Yu Qian entered the room, he saw his wife lying on the bed with a pale face and a tired expression. He knew from her appearance that she must have started her period.

Yu Qianhe jokingly teased Liu Yun, "Comrade Liu, you've had a tough day! You're so tired. Who's been ordering us around like this? Tell us, and your man will avenge you."

Liu Yun covered her face with a pillow: "He's already ruined, don't bother me, if you need anything, burn some paper money."

Yu Qian laughed and scolded, "What nonsense are you talking about? Hurry up and spit it out!"

"Hmph! A staunch communist fighter and a believer in materialism, I have nothing to fear."

Neither being a materialist nor not being a materialist should lead to cursing oneself to death. Yu Qian kicked the bed leg, "Hurry up!"

After thinking about it, I realized I'd transmigrated into multiple books, and my faith in materialism wasn't so strong anymore. I took the pillow off my head and said, "Ptooey, ptooey, that's enough!"

"Alright." After saying that, he got her a small blanket and went out to take a bath.

When he arrived at the kitchen, he saw the bowls in the basin. Judging from the number of bowls, he knew that his parents had come over today. So Liu Yun must have been out all day and then came back to cook, otherwise she wouldn't have looked so tired.

Resigned to his fate, he rolled up his sleeves and started washing the dishes.

Carrying water to the washroom to take a shower, Yu Qianhe saw the clothes of the mother and her four children in the two dressing rooms. He could only resign himself to washing the clothes after his shower.

When he finished washing up and went back, Liu Yun was already asleep; she was really tired today.

When Liu Yun woke up in the morning, the person next to her was empty; Yu Qianhe was no longer there. Liu Yun felt something was wrong with her body, sat up and looked down, and sure enough, there was a leak; the mattress was all dirty.

She got up in frustration to change the toilet paper; there was a chamber pot in the room because the triplets would get up to use the toilet at night.

The chamber pot was made of iron and had the Double Happiness symbol printed on it. It also had a lid to prevent the odor from spreading.

Liu Yun used to see short videos of foreigners using this thing as a lunch bowl, which was hilarious, but now she's using it herself.

Liu Yun now uses this to change the toilet paper. She throws it in first, and after she's done changing, she takes the chamber pot to the toilet to empty it.

It's all because she was too tired yesterday. Before, when she had her period, she would get up at night to change the sanitary pads, but she was too tired yesterday and slept too soundly.

Pushing open the door to the yard, seeing the sunlight, a phrase came to mind: "My mood is as refreshing and bright as the morning light."

But Liu Yun was anything but bright and refreshed. The experience of using pink sanitary napkins was terrible. She used a thick wad, and the menstrual belt was incredibly uncomfortable, only adding to her frustration.

I used to read online that paper cutters were fine and wouldn't interfere with normal work. That's utter nonsense. If anyone ever tells her that she can work normally using these pink paper cutters, she'll smear her menstrual blood on their face.

Not only do I dare not lie down on the bed, but even getting the small mattress protector specifically for my period dirty is a hassle, let alone soiling the bedding. That mattress protector is sewn together and has a certain thickness, which means that if it gets dirty and needs washing, it's okay on a sunny day like now, but what if it's raining or snowing? It's such a hassle.
