Chapter 45 A Feast for the New Year

Today's lunch was great, especially considering it's Lunar New Year's Eve and there's a whole family there!

Besides stewing rabbit meat, Yu's mother also prepared chicken stew with mushrooms, a braised carp, a stir-fried cabbage, and a bowl of pickled chili peppers to cleanse the palate. This meal was absolutely delicious.

Because there are children, I specially prepared a dish of sweet and sour pork. Although it is a northern dish, it is sweet and sour, which is very suitable for children.

This meal was ordinary for Liu Yun, and also fine for her parents, but it was excellent for Yu Qianwen and Yu Qianyou. After all, not everyone is like Liu Yun, who has an endless supply of food. You know, most people these days don't even see a speck of meat a few times a year.

By the afternoon, there were hardly any people in the courtyard, but you could hear some noises coming from a few houses. It was probably because everyone was resting inside, since they were going to stay up all night to welcome the New Year.

While Liu Yun was taking a nap, Yu Qianhe moved back to a small bed. When she woke up, she saw him squatting in the corner, quietly tidying up.

"What are you doing?"

Hearing the noise, Yu Qian turned around and saw that Liu Yun was already awake, while the triplets were still asleep. He threw the clothes he was holding into the box and asked, "Did I wake you up?"

"No, I'm awake." Liu Yun leaned over to take a look; he was tidying up the clothes in the closet and putting them into a box.

"What is this for?"

"I bought a small bed. I'll move this wardrobe to my older brother's room later and put the small bed here. I'll put the clothes in the suitcase and stuff them under the bed to make some space, so it won't be crowded when we sleep at night." Yu Qianhe said as he tidied up, and when he saw that Liu Yun was also awake, he quickly got to work.

"It's definitely much more convenient, since we don't have that many clothes here anyway." We just need to tidy up the things in the closet, but we also need to move the desk next to it.

The two of them worked very quickly together, and since all the men were home today, the three brothers carried the wardrobe out in no time. As a result, the room immediately felt more spacious.

The dinner prepared today was also very sumptuous, with fish and meat. Liu Yun immediately noticed the chicken on the cutting board, but that night they had to perform a sacrifice first.

Both Sister-in-law Yu the Second and Sister-in-law Yu the Third were all smiles, and when they saw Liu Yun, they quickly told her to go and take care of the children.

Liu Yun didn't refuse, after all, she had been busy for several days.

All the vegetables were almost ready by the morning. When it was time to make dinner, Mother Yu rolled up her sleeves and went into the kitchen. Her daughters-in-law assisted her, and they quickly started cooking.

The whole fish was cooked in a spicy and sour sauce, which made it less greasy. The clear, glistening broth looked beautiful when poured over it. The meat was braised pork belly with a tiger-skin pattern, served on a bed of preserved mustard greens, also known as braised pork belly with preserved mustard greens. A pot of quail soup was also made with shiitake mushrooms and goji berries. The triplets had a big appetite, so a large bowl of steamed egg custard was specially made for them. There was also stir-fried radish with pork slices and a cabbage dish, making a total of six dishes. The bowls were all bigger than Liu Yun's head and were filled to the brim.

When they realized it was time to eat, the triplets sat by the table, eagerly waiting for the meal to begin. They didn't even run away; some were serving dishes, and others were serving rice.

The atmosphere at the dinner table was a long-lost lively one. At this moment, no one wanted to cause trouble. Father Yu took out the good wine given to him by his comrades-in-arms. After each man filled his glass, he raised his glass and said, "Come on! Everyone has had a good year. I hope our family's life will get better and better!"

"cheers!"

After a glass of wine, everyone's inhibitions lessened. Yu Qianwen poured another glass for Yu Qianhe, his expression pleased, but his eyes held a complex look. "Fourth brother, the eldest brother is in the army year-round, so in principle I should be the one taking care of Mom and Dad. But in many ways, I'm not as good as you. Second brother doesn't know how to talk, but it's all in this glass of wine!"

Yu Qian also gave him face and drank a cup with him. "What do you mean it should be your responsibility? My parents are also my parents. It is my duty to take care of my parents. Besides, my parents have taken care of us more. I also want to thank my mom for taking care of the triplets these past two years, which has made things much easier for us."

Mother Yu felt very comfortable hearing this. "It's good that you know. After all, children are debts owed to their parents from their past lives!"

Seeing this, Yu Qianyou, who had been sitting to the side and had just taken a bite of food, stood up with his cup and joked, "Fourth brother, you can't just drink with your second brother, I'll drink too!"

Yu Qianhe accepted almost everything offered and drank several cups of baijiu (Chinese liquor) in one go. Liu Yun watched nervously from the side, afraid that he would collapse at any moment. After everyone sat down, she quickly said, "Eat something first, don't just focus on drinking."

Fortunately, Yu Qianhe's drinking capacity, honed by his father since childhood, was not to be underestimated. He remained relatively sober and nodded in agreement. He showed no intention of continuing to drink, and the others were not in a hurry to drink either. They ate their food, sipped their wine, and chatted occasionally.

The meal lasted about an hour. After finishing, they sat together chatting. It was already past seven o'clock when Mr. Yu and his three sons got busy.

Yu's mother played cards with her three daughters-in-law, making a perfect table. Yu Zhang took his younger siblings out to set off firecrackers, while Yu Shan carried the firecrackers. The three brothers each held one of the triplets.

Yu Zhang introduced the rare items he had managed to acquire with great difficulty. He had spent a lot of money to buy them. They looked similar to modern fireworks, with relatively flat, square boxes. There were two different sizes of square boxes. There was also a type of firecracker that hung down, made of a long strip of twisted thread.

Several people were attracted by these firecrackers they had never seen before, and a lot of children from the neighborhood gathered around them.

"Watch closely! You three, keep the triplets away from each other."

After arranging the items, Yu Zhang started lighting the fire from the left side.

Bang—crackle and pop.

A cluster of fireworks rose from the spot, spreading out like a fiery tree, burning for a few seconds before disappearing without a trace.
