Chapter 8 New Year

The next morning, I got up early for breakfast, which was extremely lavish, including chicken stew with mushrooms, fish and fish jelly, pork belly stewed with tea tree mushrooms, cured meat, radish, and snowflake balls.

Everything was served in a large bowl. After finishing breakfast, I had a New Year's red envelope in my hand. I opened it and saw that it contained the same five cents as last night.

When it was fully light, everyone changed into new clothes. Because Xu Hongxing was heavily pregnant and it was inconvenient for her to go out, Liu Aiguo stayed at home with her, while the others carried their things and headed to Liu's parents' house.

Mr. Liu and Mrs. Liu's hometown is in the same village. It would take at least an hour and a half to walk there from the county town, but today they can only take a bus to the edge of town and then walk for another hour.

It was obvious that Grandpa's family was already waiting. Liu's father had six siblings in total, and he was the sixth child, with three older brothers and two older sisters.

Liu's mother was the third of five siblings, sandwiched in the middle, and was the kind of child who was neither loved by her father nor her mother.

However, Liu's mother had a different personality from the original owner. She was the kind of person who would fight anyone who disagreed with her, regardless of who they were, and she was extremely hot-tempered.

Mr. and Mrs. Liu were both exceptionally capable. In the countryside, they were both factory workers, achieving this through their own hard work. They were the only couple in the village to do so.

Upon entering, one is greeted by a large family exchanging pleasantries. Every time Liu returns, his family is the center of attention. Last year, Liu Jing and Liu Yun found jobs one after another, making this situation even more pronounced.

Liu Yun didn't like these kinds of occasions, so she drank a cup of tea and left.

Liu Yun grew up in the countryside and actually quite likes rural life as long as she doesn't have to do farm work.

After finishing lunch, the family hurried to Liu's mother's house, which was not far from her home, about half an hour away.

Liu Yun was uncomfortable with the Liu family's flattery, let alone seeing the Wu family's obvious ulterior motives. She quickly slipped away after drinking a glass of water.

It's still early, I'll definitely eat dinner before going back. Dinner won't be until at least 5 pm, and it's only a little before 2 pm now. I ran up the mountain, found a secluded spot, and slipped into my spatial dimension.

The first thing to do upon entering the space is to feed the rabbits. After continuous planting, the breeding area is almost ready to allow them to roam freely. You know, feeding so many rabbits every day is really painful, especially since there is no privacy in the space.

Sweet potatoes, wild vegetables, and wood ear fungus that these animals can eat have been planted almost to fill half of the breeding area. Anything that reproduces quickly, grows quickly, and that poultry like to eat is planted in the breeding area.

Malabar spinach, in particular, thrives because the temperature remains constant throughout the year. Even though it gets eaten, its widespread planting has resulted in a dense abundance of it, making it ubiquitous. Soon, it will no longer need artificial feeding and will be self-sufficient.

Liu Yun's favorite animals to raise in the space are the pheasants and wild ducks. She bought them at a small market on the outskirts of the city not long after she started working. She bought them several times, spending a whole month's salary, just to buy enough to ensure they could breed in the space.

These pheasants and ducks didn't need her to take care of them at all; they foraged for food on their own. This completely free-range farming method was inspired by them.

Without a watch, I felt it was almost time, so I slowly started walking back.

When I got home from dinner, I had to walk. There were no more buses at that time. I soaked my feet and went to bed. It had been so long since I had walked like this. I felt like my body was falling apart. I'm sure I'll have a good night's sleep tonight.

The next morning, Liu's mother got up early to pack. After breakfast, Liu Aiguo took Xu Hongxing back to her parents' home. Not long after, Liu Jing and Xiao Zhihua arrived.

This was the first time Liu Yun had seen Liu Jing since she became pregnant. She seemed to be doing well, with a rosy complexion. Her belly wasn't very noticeable because she was wearing a cotton-padded coat.

We have to go back to work after the second day of the Lunar New Year. The office was decorated with Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf the moment the New Year was over.

"Oh, Xiaoyun's here! Happy New Year! Come and have some melon seeds, these are what I just got." With that, she grabbed a handful of melon seeds and put them in Liu Yun's hand.

"Thank you, Sister Luo." She took the sunflower seeds and put them in her backpack, then took out two handfuls of peanuts from the bag. These peanuts had been boiled with salt and then dried in her space. "Come on, come on, big sister, have some peanuts. They're on the table! Everyone, help yourselves."

People eat more sunflower seeds than peanuts, because peanuts can be pressed for oil, so these two handfuls of peanuts are very popular.

The office was filled with a harmonious atmosphere as everyone shared their latest gossip. Liu Yun, meanwhile, was munching on melon seeds and enjoying herself immensely. Life couldn't be better.

Just be careful if you're just watching the show, or you might end up getting caught in the crossfire.

How old is Xiaoyun this year?

"The New Year is over, and I'll be eighteen soon." The original owner was born in the second month of the lunar calendar, a Pisces, so I can understand that personality—prone to overthinking and depression.

"Do you have a boyfriend yet? Let me introduce you to someone."

"Sister, there's no rush! Right now, I just want to dedicate myself to the country, work hard and improve myself every day. Finding a partner is something I'll think about later."

"Let me tell you, you should grab a good man as soon as possible. Don't think you're too young to rush. The younger you are, the more you should pick and choose to find the right one."

Once this was started, it was as if everyone had suddenly been freed from some kind of shackles. Indeed, being beautiful, having graduated from high school, having a good job, and having a family of factory workers, she was definitely a hot commodity.

Several older women were subtly inquiring about what kind of person she was looking for. Liu Yun simply laughed it off and changed the subject. No one brought it up again, and she quietly breathed a sigh of relief.

However, this interruption made Liu Yun suddenly realize that it was already 1966, and that the decade was about to begin.

Liu Yun had never witnessed how chaotic those ten years were, but judging from the period novels she had read, they must have been incredibly difficult. So now she needed to start making plans and also put finding a partner on her mind.
