Chapter 6 Wedding

That night, in Liu's mother's room, she said, "Old man, it seems like our four children have all drifted apart. How did things turn out like this?"

"Sigh! The fourth brother is now wary of the eldest brother's family! The second and third brothers also have quite a few grievances against the eldest brother. Let's just let it go for now. Children and grandchildren have their own blessings."

"The eldest brother is unreliable, the fourth brother is a good-for-nothing, but I really misjudged the third brother. Today the second brother told me that the third brother gave her a dress, and when I looked at it, it was a red plaid one. It would be perfect for her wedding day."

"She got it herself? You didn't give her money or a ticket?"

"No, she got it herself. I only knew she could grow some vegetables in the countryside, I never imagined she had this ability. I really underestimated her before. But I hope nothing bad will happen to her?"

"Probably not. Did anyone notice anything amiss when she was at home? Children and grandchildren have their own lives to live, let them be. We shouldn't interfere too much. The children are all grown up, at least the three of them are still of one mind. By the way, is the second child's dowry ready?"

"Six pairs of shoes are ready, and clothes are also made. I wasn't planning to make a quilt, but seeing how she was recently, I'm afraid she has some resentment because of the eldest son, so I prepared a new quilt."

"Okay, let's add another twenty to our savings! We can start preparing for the third brother's too. They're right, we should start thinking about ourselves too. We might not be able to rely on the eldest brother in the future."

"Okay. How come the eldest brother... sigh! Children are all debts from past lives!"

As for why Liu's parents couldn't sleep all night, no one in the family knew or cared.

Tomorrow, Liu Jing is getting married. The two sisters moved back into their original room. Looking at the forty yuan that Liu's mother gave them and the quilts they had made during this time, the mother and daughter finally reconciled.

Xu Hongxing kept looking at the quilt and skirt with a long face, as if they were her things, while Liu Aidang happily moved them in and out.

Liu Jing got up very early the next morning, while Liu Yun was woken up to make tea and welcome the guests.

The custom here is that the bride's family is supposed to prepare breakfast for the guests who are seeing off the bride and the guests who are welcoming the bride from the south this morning. However, Liu Yun doesn't need to do this; her relatives from the Liu family came over early this morning to help.

People started arriving before eight o'clock. Liu Yun finally met Xiao Hongmei, the female lead in "Rebirth in the 1960s". Sure enough, she had an oval face and almond eyes. She was the kind of woman that middle-aged women loved in this era. Even in the 21st century, she wouldn't be inferior to those popular young actresses.

According to the timeline, she should be reborn in March next year. Right now, she looks like a naive and innocent girl who has been well protected by her family, while Xiao Zhihua next to her has the most popular square face at the moment.

Nowadays, simple weddings are preferred, so there aren't many ceremonies. Apart from some necessary customs, everything is kept as simple as possible. The six bicycles that came to pick up the bride were quite impressive. They set off from the Liu family's house at 9:18 sharp and arrived at the Xiao family's house in a grand procession.

Most people come to see the bride and her dowry; the children just come to get some wedding candy.

The banquet didn't start until almost one o'clock at the state-run restaurant. The Xiao family was much better off than the Liu family, and they only had one son and one daughter. However, they had more relatives and friends, so the wedding banquet was much better than when Liu Aiguo got married, with six tables set up.

After attending the wedding banquet, Liu Yun began her life of going to work and living alone in the living room. Because her workplace was far away, and because of the big argument they had had before, no matter how much Xu Hongxing made a fuss, he couldn't do anything about it.

Liu Yun's life has even become easier because her workplace is far away and the commute between the two places takes a long time.

However, Xu Hongxing was pregnant, so most of the work was done by Liu's mother. Liu Aidang seemed to have become more sensible since that argument, and at least he would help Liu's mother with some housework.

Although Liu Aiguo wasn't a great person, he truly doted on his wife, doing everything from washing clothes to emptying her foot bath water.

Of course, Liu Yun couldn't just ignore everything. Although she didn't do much housework anymore, she would bring groceries home every few days, maintaining a routine of working six days a week and bringing vegetables for three days and eggs for one day.

There are plenty of vegetables and wild greens now, and the eggs in the space—chicken, duck, goose, and quail—are more than we can eat. They've also hatched many little chicks.

Fortunately, even though I live in the living room, I live alone, so as long as I'm careful, I can still feed the chickens, ducks, geese, and rabbits.

Now a large patch of Malabar spinach is planted in the space. Because it is a climbing vine, it can be propagated by cuttings and reproduces quickly. It can be eaten from spring to autumn. Most importantly, poultry love to eat it, and it is also highly nutritious. It has solved a big problem. Otherwise, if she had to feed all the poultry with grain, she wouldn't have enough to feed them.

Because most of the eggs in the enclosure that weren't eaten or collected were hatched, and the rabbits reproduce quickly, feeding them became a real problem. But with Malabar spinach, this problem has been solved for now.

Since starting work, Liu Yun has been sending gifts to Teacher Yuan's home every month, mostly rabbits and chicken/duck eggs. She now understands why she was able to find such a good job.

This time, I really hit the jackpot. I only knew that Yuan Ping was different from other teachers because she was from the city and should have better access to information, so I asked her for help. After all, teachers were still pretty good at this time. I didn't expect that her husband was from the Education Bureau. No wonder she had such good access to information.

Liu Yun absolutely loves this job now. Her colleagues are easy to get along with, and Liu Yun has successfully integrated into the group of people who enjoy eating melon seeds and slacking off.

There are also meal buddies, either with the older women in the office or with Lin Chaomei, whom I met back then, and now the two have successfully become good friends.
