After saying goodbye, Lan Ling and Liang Rumo went home. They lived in the same community, on the same floor, just one floor apart. They were neighbors.
"Ling, you're back."
When I went back, opened the door, and turned on the light, I saw my mother, who looked tired. She was leaning on the sofa waiting for me.
"I'm back."
Lan Ling changed into slippers, put down her schoolbag, walked to the sofa, took out a cup, and went to the water dispenser to get some boiled water to drink.
At home, my mother is the only one busying around. My father works away from home and rarely comes home due to his busy schedule.
For the sake of her studies, my mother chose to give up her well-paid job and go home to be a housewife, going back and forth every day for food, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, tea and other necessities.
"Mom, I'm not hungry. I'm going back to my room. Don't wait for me anymore. I can go home. I can do it alone. So many years have passed. I'm used to it."
"Ling, are you still blaming me? I blame myself for giving birth to you but not raising you..."
There was guilt on the mother's face. When she got married, she didn't think about having children. Who knew that the child would come quietly.
Neither she nor her husband were willing to compromise and both chose to give up their children's company for their careers.
But now as a mother, she finds that she is a qualified employee in the company, but she is not a qualified and excellent mother at home, and she is not even worthy of the word mother.
"You weren't here when I needed you, so don't bother me now that I don't need you."
Lan Ling spoke as usual, feeling a little choked up and about to cry, but she forced herself to hold back her tears and turned back.
Many things about her past emerged in Lan Ling's mind. When she was in junior high school, she was a day student and she was the only one at home. Both her parents worked outside and rarely came home. Her grandparents lived in the countryside and rarely came to the city. They didn't understand many of the electronic equipment in the city and they didn't like coming here.
When she was in junior high school, Lan Ling basically took care of everything by herself. She was the only one who did the washing, cooking and cleaning. Her parents never gave her any emotional support, but only financially. The most common questions they asked her were: "Do you need money? How much money have I given you? You have to study hard, otherwise you will let us down."
It was like this every time, over and over again, which made Lan Ling very annoyed. Her parents never showed up at her parent-teacher meetings, not even once. Every time, it was her aunt who helped to attend the meetings. If people didn't know, they would think that she had no parents and was a left-behind child.
"Lan Ling...I did it for your own good. Don't you need money to buy things and toys? Don't you need money to go to school? I did it for your own good..."
"Are you hungry? I'll go make you some food. Are you tired today?"
"No need! Touch..!"
After he finished speaking, he slammed the door shut. He couldn't continue talking to her. No matter how much he talked, how could he make up for so many years of feelings in one go? What's more, she didn't need it now.
Lan Ling's mother stared at the door in a daze, then went back to her room to rest. She still didn't want to accept herself and still didn't want herself as her mother.
He didn't even ask for pocket money, and at one point he even wanted to run away from home and rent a house outside so that he wouldn't see me.
"Lan Ling...I'm sorry..."
She did not accompany her child during his childhood, nor was she by his side when he needed her. She gave up a lot for her career, but who would have thought that when she reached the top, she would realize that what she wanted most was just a child.
