Li Mo'er followed the village chief to the office and carried the textbooks left behind by the previous teacher back home.
After leaving school, the four little ones, including Xiaoruanruan, were finally free. Su Xiaowu led her younger siblings straight to the stream they had seen on their way there the day before.
The water in the stream flows down from the mountain. It's not deep; even if a little girl goes in, she'll only go up to her knees at most.
The stream was crystal clear, and you could see some small fish swimming in it.
But when Xiao Ruanruan and the others arrived, there were already several children turning over stones in the stream.
When the children saw Xiaoruanruan and her friends arrive, they stopped what they were doing, glanced at them, and then looked away, somewhat embarrassed.
Some of the older children even deliberately raised their voices and spoke loudly to cover up their embarrassment.
Little Ruanruan saw an older sister who looked about the same age as her older sister, and when she saw them, she secretly tugged at her wrinkled clothes that were a size too big.
Little Ruanruan looked at the clothes she and her older brothers and sisters were wearing.
Since they were coming to the countryside, Xiao Ruanruan and the others packed their clothes as simply and conveniently as possible. So, the four of them were only wearing simple T-shirts, shirts, and jeans.
However, the materials, cuts, and designs of clothes can make even the simplest garments feel completely different when worn.
Moreover, most of the clothes worn by the children in the village were ill-fitting.
Little Ruanruan bent down, rolled up the legs of her overalls, and sat down by the stream without a care, sliding into the water. Her little feet trembled slightly when they first touched the icy water.
However, she quickly adapted and walked over to the village children with her little feet, greeting them politely with a sweet smile: "Hello, my name is Xiaoruanruan. My older brother and sister and I also want to catch fish and crabs. Can we play together?"
The village children were clearly surprised that Xiao Ruanruan would come over and greet them. They blushed with embarrassment, and the two oldest children nodded somewhat flusteredly, "Y-yes."
Little Ruanruan's smile grew even sweeter, and her big, bright eyes, like chilled grapes, curved into crescent moons as she smiled. "Thank you, brother and sister."
Little Ruan Ruan noticed the discomfort the village children felt in her presence, so after greeting them, she returned to her older siblings.
At this moment, Su Xiaowu had already started turning over the stones to look for crabs.
Sisi was moving stones to enclose the stream, trying to stop a group of small fish.
Su Lei didn't go into the water; he just sat on a large rock on the shore and watched them.
Little Ruanruan huffed and puffed as she carried stones to help her older sister.
A village child, watching the two sisters' actions, couldn't help but walk over to them. Looking at the stones they had surrounded, the child asked curiously, "Why are you surrounding the stones?"
"Shh!" Little Softie put her chubby little hand to her pink lips, which looked like cherry blossom petals, and gestured for her older sister to be quiet. Then she pointed to a group of small fish in the middle of the water and said in a low voice, "Sister, we want to catch those fish."
The two girls who came over exchanged glances, and, influenced by Xiao Ruanruan's emotions, lowered their voices and said, "Xiao Ruanruan, you won't be able to catch the horned fish like this. I'll teach you how to catch them."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Ruanruan quickly called her older sister, who was moving stones, back.
Sisi walked over cautiously, afraid of disturbing the group of small fish.
After Sisi stood down next to Xiaoruanruan, the two girls from the village suddenly took a piece of suitable size from the stones that Xiaoruanruan and the others had surrounded and threw it at the group of small fish.
"Thump!"
The sound of a stone falling into the water rang out.
Sisi watched as the group of small fish she had carefully tried to surround scattered and fled. After a moment of stunned silence, she became somewhat angry and was about to question the two little girls.
Then I saw two little girls walk towards where the fish had been. One of them picked up a few small fish that had been stunned from the water and held them in her hands. She smiled brightly at Xiao Ruanruan and Qianqian. "Xiao Ruanruan, look, you have to stun the horned fish before you can catch them. You can surround them with stones, but when you try to catch them, they will still escape through the gaps in the stones."
When Little Softie saw the fish in her older sisters' hands, her pair of dark, ice-cold grape-like eyes lit up as if starlight had been shattered. "Wow, sisters, you're so amazing!"
The two little girls' smiles became a bit shy. "This is how we've always caught hornedfish since we were little."
Sisi felt a little embarrassed. She had thought the other person was trying to cause her trouble, but it turned out she had been mistaken. The other person genuinely wanted to help her.
After the two girls finished speaking, they asked, "Where is your bucket? Let us put the fish in your bucket."
Xiao Ruanruan and Qianqian scratched their heads. They had gone to school when they left home, and they hadn't thought of bringing a bucket on their way back.
One of the little girls noticed their predicament, ran to the shore, and took out a small bucket she had made by cutting a mineral water bottle by removing the neck and stringing it together. She put the fish in her hand and handed it to Xiao Ruanruan, saying, "I'll lend you my bucket for now. You can return it to me when you take the fish back."
"Thank you, big sister." Little Ruanruan immediately asked in her sweet, childlike voice, "Big sister, what's your name?"
