Chen Jie took Ye Ruan to the snack street outside Peking University.
It was lunchtime, and every small restaurant was packed with people.
Chen Jie went to a small but very clean courtyard, which was a restaurant converted from an old house. His own house had a small courtyard outside.
Several large, wine-red umbrellas were spread out in the courtyard, and tables were placed under the umbrellas.
The yard is enclosed by a fence, and roses are climbing on the fence, blooming brightly.
The ambiance here is as tranquil as a coffee shop, but it is actually a Sichuan restaurant.
Chen Jie handed the menu to Ye Ruan, whose eyes swept over it. "Fresh rabbit hot pot, Sichuan pepper fish, and a stir-fried green vegetable, please."
Ye Ruan handed the menu back to the middle-aged proprietress.
"Alright!" The proprietress readily took the menu and looked at Chen Jie, saying, "Young man, the usual? I'll cook you two dishes without the numbing spice."
Before Chen Jie could answer, the enthusiastic proprietress continued, "You've already graduated with your doctorate, right? What brings you to the university today? Is it because your girlfriend is starting college and you came to visit her?"
Upon hearing the proprietress's words, Chen Jie subconsciously glanced at Ye Ruan's expression and quickly explained, "Proprietress, you've misunderstood, she's not my girlfriend..."
Before he could finish speaking, the proprietress said, "Hey, she's not your girlfriend now, but you'll see how things go as you go along. Don't tell me this girl is your sister. I know your sister, and Xiao Danqing said that there are only two of you siblings in your family."
You're not getting any younger, so why are you still shy about dating?
When Xiao Danqing came to my house for dinner before, she was worried about your marriage. You should also pay attention to it.
The aunt thought this little girl was quite nice; she was sweet-looking and had a sweet smile, which made people happy just looking at her.
Look, even after all that talking, the little girl isn't angry at all; she's still all smiles. She's so endearing…”
The more the proprietress talked, the more awkwardly Chen Jie could only smile.
It wasn't until the proprietress went to attend to her work that he awkwardly apologized to Ye Ruan, saying, "Ye Ruan, I'm sorry. When I was studying at Peking University, I often ate here and was quite familiar with the owner and his family, so I spoke rather casually."
"It's alright, the landlady is quite nice." Ye Ruan rested her chin on one hand, habitually observing her surroundings discreetly.
In this small courtyard, couples, best friends, and brothers who would share a drink would come and go, making a lot of noise. It didn't quite match Chen Jie's gentle and refined temperament, but Ye Ruan liked it very much. She felt that the place was full of the warmth and life of everyday people.
The food tasted great, with just the right amount of spiciness, and strangely, Ye Ruan tasted a familiar flavor.
While eating, Chen Jie subtly inquired about her preferences.
If it weren't for the previous apology, Chen Jie's inquiries might have made people think he was interested in her. But after the previous mistake, Ye Ruan knew very well that he was comparing her to the person in his memory to confirm whether she was really her.
After answering Chen Jie's questions one by one, she put down her chopsticks, looked at Chen Jie with her clear and bright eyes, and asked directly, "Do I really look like her?"
When she said that, Chen Jie was stunned for a moment, then he laughed, seemingly trying to brush it off.
But Ye Ruan didn't give him that chance, and asked again, "Do I look a lot like Su Ruanruan?"
Her tone was filled with doubt and inquiry, but without a trace of anger or resentment.
Instead of answering, Chen Jie asked, "Are there still people who mistake you for Ruan Ruan?"
"Never mind that. Anyway, you invited me to dinner not just because you wanted to apologize, but also because I resemble her. So, you have to answer my question." Ye Ruan stared intently at Chen Jie with her beautiful obsidian-like eyes.
Chen Jie felt completely powerless under that gaze.
He looked back into her eyes and said seriously, "You two don't look very alike. When Xiao Ruan Ruan was little, she had a round, chubby face and was very cute."
But you have a very delicate oval face; although you are equally pretty and cute, you are not the same type.
"But your eyes are so alike, so clear and bright, as if they've been filled with the starlight of the entire sky."
At this point, Chen Jie lowered his head and chuckled self-deprecatingly before saying, "I know you're not her, but your eyes look so much like hers. I miss her so much, so I took the liberty of inviting you to dinner. Please forgive me."
Ye Ruan got the answer she wanted, waved her hand generously, picked up her chopsticks again, and while happily picking through the pile of green and red peppers to eat the rabbit meat, she said, "What's wrong with that? Everyone has two eyes, one nose, and one mouth. It's normal to look alike."
"I got a free meal from you just because I look like someone you know. Isn't that a pleasant thing?"
Hearing her words, Chen Jie's smile softened even more. In fact, the girl in front of him not only had eyes that resembled Xiao Ruan Ruan, but sometimes her tone of voice, expression, and some small gestures would also overlap with the image of the person he longed for day and night.
He looked at the person sitting across the table and couldn't help but ask, "Can I be your friend?"
"Sure!" Ye Ruan readily agreed, even extending a slender hand to shake his.
