Chapter 13 The Return Journey, Bitten by a Snake

She had never been to this mountain before, but judging from what she had seen earlier, the villagers had done a lot of weeding. The weeds were only green at the roots, gradually turning yellow towards the top, and by the time they reached the tips, they looked just like withered grass in autumn.

There were hardly any edible wild vegetables to be seen, and the ground beneath their feet was cracked. The villagers gathered firewood while searching the ground for anything edible. However, after searching so many times, they had practically scraped the ground up. It was clear from their words that food was becoming increasingly difficult to find.

Jian Dan had no intention of competing with them for land; her target was the deep mountains.

In her past life, she would occasionally venture into the deep mountains and forests, but it was always for fun and adventure, and she always went in groups. This was the first time she had gone alone.

It was indeed a severe drought; the branches were all wilted, the leaves were curled up, and the branches drooped listlessly.

The wild grass on the ground was sparse, but the further in you went, the greener it became, which made you more certain that things were better inside than outside.

After walking for more than an hour, Jian Dan could clearly feel the shadows of the trees overhead getting thicker and the scent of grass and trees becoming more pronounced. She had already taken out her self-defense weapon.

These days, people can't even get enough to eat, and the wild animals in the mountains aren't much better off. She came here to find a way to survive, not to die.

It's not that she's a saint; according to the established trajectory, she'll be staying here for at least a decade. For her own peaceful life and for her future personal safety, she needs a base of support from the public.

She doesn't want to stay for two or three years and then leave; she can be indifferent to everything and just endure it.

However, after more than ten years, she didn't want to live like a thief, because the chaos was yet to come. If she could make friends, she didn't need to make enemies.

Moreover, it seems that no one has any ill intentions towards her, and she is willing to do something.

The air around us is getting fresher and fresher; we've already entered the deep mountains.

Not to mention the trees overhead, even the weeds underfoot were standing upright, making it easier to breathe.

Jian Dan picked up a stick and started digging around. She had to admit that the resources in the deep mountains were different. Most of the plants were still growing normally. Wild fruits, wild plums, wild chestnuts, red ground cherries, hazelnuts, pine cones, and wild grapes were all growing. Compared to the bare ground down below the mountain, this place was simply paradise. Jian Dan was having a great time collecting them. Since there was no one around, she simply brought them all to the base.

There were also some mushrooms and wild vegetables that Miss Jane couldn't distinguish, and not wanting to end up lying on a flat board, she didn't dare touch any of them.

She didn't even dare to eat wild vegetables. In her eyes, they were all the same. She had eaten wild vegetables a few times in her previous life, but they were always prepared for import. She had never seen them living in their natural state before, so she simply skipped them. Unfortunately, there was nothing she could do, as this was deep in the mountains.

Moreover, she couldn't say anything about these scattered patches; it would be worth the villagers risking coming up here if there were truly large areas of food that could fill their stomachs.

After coming up once, they weren't in a hurry to go back. They slept at the base that night and didn't start their return journey until the third day.

The mountain is huge, and we've only covered a small area in three days. It's simple and we're not greedy. It's so close, there will be plenty of opportunities to come back in the future. If we don't go back now, I'm afraid it will be hard to explain to the village. What if someone disappears the day after moving into their new house? That would be quite a show.

Perhaps because her trip had gone too smoothly, on her way back, she somehow provoked a snake. Jian Dan was exhausted these past few days and didn't react in time, so she was hit squarely by the snake's tail and flung onto a tree trunk more than ten meters away.

He let out a muffled groan, feeling completely disoriented from the fall. He felt as if every bone in his body had shifted, and even the slightest movement caused him immense pain. He was also seeing stars.

However, knowing that this was a matter of life and death, he used all his strength to enter the base a second before the giant snake arrived.

The enraged snake was stunned by the sudden disappearance of the hand, and its anger surged even higher. It lashed out with its large tail in a chaotic and destructive manner, trying to find the culprit that had disturbed it.

Only when his body landed firmly on the base's ground did Jian Dan breathe a sigh of relief.

Holding her increasingly heavy head, her vision growing increasingly blurry, Jian Dan finally realized something was wrong.

She pinched her thigh to stay awake and checked herself over, only to find two small, blackened holes on her calf. She hadn't even noticed she'd been bitten, so did the snake attack her because its tail had been stepped on?

Without time to think too much, he teleported to the infirmary, forced himself to inject himself with a vial of serum, and then collapsed to the ground with peace of mind.

When she woke up again, Jian Dan immediately looked at her calves, and thankfully, they had returned to their normal skin color.

"Why!"

She sighed softly. She was still too relaxed. Someone who goes deep into the mountains to explore every day, and to be bitten by a snake, is shameful.

This served as a wake-up call for her. Danger is ever-present, no matter the era. Therefore, it is imperative to improve one's self-protection capabilities. Even she, who believed she could foresee the future, was no exception and had no advantage whatsoever.

Her only advantage is that she has a base, food and drink, and ample supplies. She has no worries about food and clothing. Even if she doesn't leave the village or work, she can support herself for several lifetimes.

Time moves slower inside the base than outside; when I came out, the sun was still high in the sky.

The surrounding trees were damaged to varying degrees, indicating that the giant snake had a bad temper and was extremely vengeful.

Jian Dan couldn't help but feel fortunate again; if she had been a step slower, that tree trunk would have been her fate.

Look at my small frame, no, no, I'm still too weak.

When she set off again, she was on high alert. It wasn't the same path that led up the mountain, and even the plants under her feet were different.

As she walked, she looked around, her eyes like radar, nothing useful could escape her notice, except for things she recognized.

The further out you go, the less vibrant the weeds and plants become, and the fewer species there are.

Inside, she also encountered several kinds of medicinal herbs, which she didn't miss.

As she was making her way out of the deep mountains, two brightly colored pheasants flew past her. They were so startled by her that they fluttered away and flew away.

Quick and easy, a few stones flew out, and two screams were heard not far away, followed by the sound of heavy objects falling.

She happily went over to collect her spoils. Although she had killed quite a few, she could never have too much of it. After all, isn't chicken soup more delicious?

In my excitement, I neglected my footing, and vines tangled haphazardly around my feet, making it impossible to move. Only then did I realize something was wrong, and when I squatted down to take a look, oh dear!

The young lady was delighted. She recognized this thing; it was a valuable item at this time. She was just worrying about it, and now this solution had come to her doorstep.
