Chapter 167 The Exhausting Autumn Harvest

Wang Hongmei is a chatterbox, but she doesn't dare to do anything big. Su Hong is aloof and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, would probably disdain associating with them. There's also the cunning Tang Cui, the self-important Li Jianye, and the older brother Wang Jiancheng who always tries to smooth things over. Aren't they all not on the same page?

They returned full of enthusiasm, only to find that things weren't going well, leaving the group of people who were hoping to see a good show somewhat disappointed.

"Alright, isn't this better? If this really escalates, we won't have a peaceful day!"

"Alright, alright, remember to call me next time there's something exciting."

Don't worry, with their personalities, they'll start fighting again in a couple of days. The real drama is yet to come.

It was supposed to be a housewarming party, but since they were newlyweds, everyone went back inside to get some things, each one a token of their appreciation.

Li Yan and a few others brought a large piece of fabric. It was easy for the male educated youths; they could just give it to Lin Dongfang. Jian Dan also followed the crowd and went back to find a large red peony-patterned bed sheet. Unexpectedly, it amazed the girls, who stared at it in disbelief.

"Little Dandan, you had this amazing stuff all along? You kept it from us, waaaaah!"

It's fake, but I can accept it.

"Yeah, simple. Didn't you see Mingzhu's eyes just now? It looked like she wanted to hide that bed sheet?"

Simple, taking advantage of her young age, flirted with everyone.

"Hehe, well, who told me to be younger? What, are you jealous?"

No problem, I'll give you the exact same thing when you get married. Don't be too envious!

"Hey, you little brat, what are you saying?"

After being bothered like this, it's nice to feel a little homesick. I can go back whenever I want and leave whenever I want.

They got along well, but since they were all newly arrived educated youth, they didn't yet have the level of mutual trust. None of them brought expensive gifts; each family brought a box of pastries.

In order to prepare for the autumn harvest the next day, the group didn't stay up too late. Otherwise, it would be quite a scene to be late on the first day of the harvest.

This is the first time Jian Dan has ever had a proper autumn harvest.

She was woken up early by the alarm clock. The journey to the village was already quite far, and she had to leave five or seven minutes early. Without delay, she quickly finished her breakfast and, with the second work bell ringing, slowly made her way out.

Not far past Mingzhu's house, you'll start to encounter villagers. They're all dressed in shorts and trousers, but they all wear triangular headscarves, which is a common practice here. It protects their faces from leaves, provides sun protection, and can even be used as a towel when they sweat—it's a very practical item.

Several educated youths who had participated in farming knew this, and the female educated youths all followed suit.

Simple was naturally prepared, but it was too early; the sun had just risen and it wasn't hot yet. Everyone's scarves were folded diagonally, and since it was a quiet time here, they tied the two corners together and draped them around their necks, which looked quite nice.

Weeding this summer, while not exactly tiring, certainly felt abnormal; we are all abnormal people.

Sure enough, before noon, Li Yan and the others came out for some fresh air several times, as it was really stuffy.

By lunchtime, several girls could barely lift their arms and walked out listlessly, their faces covered in leaf scraps. They were slightly better physically, but their appearance wasn't much better. After all, they were strong, but after a morning of repeatedly getting up and bending over, even the strongest back couldn't take it.

Are you alright?

Li Yan leaned closer, looking weak and listless.

"What do you think? I'm exhausted. That headscarf is useless when it gets hot. The leaves and corn stalks on it keep falling down and almost got into my eyes. In my panic, I reached out to rub them, but I forgot that my hands weren't clean either. As a result, I almost blinded myself."

"Look at that, her eyes are red, and her face is covered in leaves."

She wanted to laugh, but her conscience told her she couldn't. Okay!

"Go back and take a good shower. The lunch break is long, so eat something quickly and take advantage of the time to rest. Move your arms and legs around, especially after you get up from your rest. If you don't move around, you'll be even more tired in the afternoon."

She was so tired that she didn't even have the energy to say hello. Jian Dan didn't say much either. Not to mention others, she was exhausted herself. Her waist felt like it was about to break.

Back home, without saying a word, I first cooled myself down by washing my face and finding a massage chair to lie on for a while. Once I felt a bit better, I dug out the ready-made food from the base. At a time like this, what else is there to say? Wouldn't it be better to rest a little longer? It's not like we don't have the means.

Simple self-comfort was quite effective. After eating, I simply lay down on the massage chair and took a nap until the afternoon work bell rang, at which point I was not woken up.

However, this thing does have some effect; by waving your arms and kicking your legs, at least your stiff body is your own again.

It has to be said that when you're young, your body's elasticity and resilience are at their best, and you recover quickly. You were already bouncing around when you went to work in the afternoon.

However, it only lasted for half the time, and by the time I finished work in the afternoon, I was already a listless little thing again.

Even Jian Dan had to admit that this body was indeed still young, a minor, and high-intensity labor was really unsuitable for it.

Fortunately, after the corn had been drying for a few days, they were all sent to harvest sweet potatoes because they were too slow and were holding the group back.

This year, a lot of sweet potatoes were planted, but compared to corn, they were much better. Villagers led the way, pulling up the seedlings, and then the male educated youth took pitchforks to turn the soil, while the female educated youth picked them up from behind, pile after pile, basket after basket. Although it wasn't easy, there were no leaves to block the air, and they could work for a while by squatting down in one place. Even if they were exposed to the sun, they were willing to do it.

Although her body was still stiff when she finished work, her spirits were pretty good, and Li Yan even had time to complain.

"Didn't you see? Chen Hongli, she injured herself just picking up a sweet potato,"

"Huh? When did that happen?"

The sweet potato field was quite large, and since they weren't in the same area, they really didn't know about it.

"It was only a short while after we started working in the afternoon. The villagers were turning over the soil ahead of us. I don't know what happened, but Chen Hongli ran up to the pitchfork. When they put the pitchfork down, it didn't turn the soil. As a result, she screamed. When they looked, good heavens, the pitchfork had somehow scraped her leg. She was screaming like crazy."

The person working there was initially quite embarrassed, thinking he hadn't seen her, and even offered to take her to Uncle Chen's to check on her. They didn't say they wouldn't help, but she just kept babbling on and on. Well, when everyone's busy, who has time to listen to her rambling nonsense? So they sent someone to call the village chief. And when he came over, guess what happened?
