Chapter 256 It's Raining

She couldn't discourage this; in fact, she had to strongly support it.

"Wow, Xin Xin is so amazing! But it's so late. How about we go home and go to bed early, and then get up early tomorrow to go find Xiao Hua?"

Nothing serious. Most people in the village go to sleep as soon as it gets dark and rarely use lamps, which would be a waste of kerosene.

The kerosene lamps were only lit a handful of times a year; for example, right now, all the windows in the village are completely dark.

"Look, aren't they all asleep?"

In Jian's family, there's no such rule; they leave the lights on at night as usual. She doesn't want to ruin her eyesight before anything even happens to her.

As a result, Jian Xin also assumed that turning on the light meant she wasn't sleeping, and not turning on the light meant she was sleeping.

I've given up hope.

"Okay then, I'll get up early tomorrow and bring two books with me."

He held up two fingers, looking very serious.

He simply turned around and locked the door.

"It's up to you."

But can you put those books on the shelf yourself?

The west room was originally intended for the children. Like the east room, it has shelves built against the wall, but it's usually just used to store the children's clothes and toys, and it's quite empty.

Moreover, apart from clothes, the children basically arrange everything else themselves.

The little girl jumped around happily.

"Okay! Sister, let's go, let's go! I want to see how many books you bought!"

I was so engrossed in a comic book in the bookstore that I didn't even notice Jian Dan's grand gesture of booking out the whole place. All I saw was Jian Dan carrying a bundle of books, happily planning to go inside and browse through them.

She practically booked the entire bookstore, but she didn't want to move everything out now. Today, she just wanted to organize the comic books with her child and then hand them over to the child.

Upon entering the house, first light the stove pit, as the early spring nights are still a bit chilly, and the kang (heated brick bed) needs to be warmed up.

Then I went inside and first took the things out of the basket.

"Here, these are some foods. Grandma Cheng said they were for you. You can pack them up yourself."

The child didn't refuse, untying each item one by one, then clumsily wrapping it up again, muttering to himself.

"This is a peach shortbread,"

"This is milk candy,"

......

After wrapping each item, I turned around and placed it on the shelf behind me.

She was very skilled at this. She didn't hide any of the snacks at home that could be exposed to light, and let the children arrange them themselves.

Aside from reminding her to eat less sugar and rinse her mouth more often, Jian Dan rarely interferes as long as her child doesn't miss meals because of snacks.

It's fair to say that even in later generations, many parents wouldn't be able to raise their children with such a free-range approach.

"Sister, this box contains succulents,"

A quick glance revealed that the square oil paper package that had been placed on top contained two lunch boxes filled with braised pork. By now, the pork had naturally solidified a bit. However, given the short time available, the only option was to sleep in a state-run restaurant.

Moreover, the lunchboxes were all new.

"Let's heat it up tomorrow. What should we say to that grandma next time we see her?"

The little girl answered in a loud voice, "I know I should say thank you!"

Once the books were taken out of the basket, Jian Xin immediately had no time to think about anything else.

Wow! Sister, why did you buy so much?

While she wasn't looking, I quickly mixed in the comic books from my space, putting away any that didn't seem suitable.

"So, do you like it?"

The little girl pounced on him and gave him a wet kiss.

"I love it! It's the newest older sister!"

However, it must be said that, perhaps it was the girl's inner energy, or perhaps it was the energy of a scholar, that made Jian Xin so fond of books. She handled them with great care, putting the big books aside and putting her little picture books together, doing it with great enthusiasm.

"Sister, this is yours!"

I did a simple selection process. Apart from the dozens of children's picture books and textbooks that were placed outside, I picked out one or two of everything else, including those about animal husbandry and planting, and then put out a book of quotes with a big red cover. That was about it.

Now she and her children live in the west room, so the books haven't been separated, but she has her own floor.

Jian Xin was delighted. She didn't recognize all the books, but the covers were mostly similar. She asked Jian Xin about the ones she didn't recognize on the spot. The books were arranged quite neatly.

Jian Dan didn't interfere. She said it was for her, so she had full control over it. Jian Dan just needed to make sure it was safe.

Dozens of comic books, a dictionary, and a book of quotations were neatly arranged on the bottom shelf. The shelf was long, so it wasn't fully filled; it was only less than half full. A wooden box was placed on the outermost side to prevent the books from slipping.

After finishing arranging everything, he admired it for a long time with great satisfaction before reluctantly drawing the curtains, crawling into his little quilt, and whimpering several times, still too excited to fall asleep.

Finally, I snuggled into the simple blankets and stayed snuggled up for a long time before finally drifting off to sleep.

If you have something on your mind, you'll wake up early.

This applies to children as well.

The next morning, just as dawn was breaking, the child started fussing. Jian Dan, still half asleep, quickly pulled the child into her own bed.

"Sleep a little longer. Why get up so early? We're not going to work today."

The little body struggled.

"No, I'm not going to sleep."

In a daze, he simply let go of her hand.

"Do you need to pee? Go now."

Then I fell asleep immediately, and when I woke up, it was already broad daylight, and I could hear the sound of pattering rain.

Looking up, I saw that it was indeed raining.

Looking around, she saw a little girl lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) with her bottom sticking up, engrossed in a picture book. Jian Dan immediately smiled and gently patted her bottom.

"Why are you up so early?"

"Sister," the little girl immediately sat up.

"Sister, you're awake? Look, it's raining. Can we still go out?"

I don't like getting up on rainy days; I'm just lazy and lethargic.

"Let's see, we can go out once the rain stops."

"Oh well,"

The little girl was still pouting, clearly a bit aggrieved.

"Oh well."

Jian Dan couldn't stand seeing her like this, so she quickly got up and dressed, then smoothly changed the subject.

"What would you like to eat for breakfast? Millet porridge, rice porridge, noodles, dumpling soup, or perhaps steamed egg custard?"

To be honest, having a child has really made me more meticulous. I've even become more serious about cooking. I can now make dumpling soup and have learned several different ways to make noodles.

The little girl's attention was diverted. She had been awake for so long, but the kang (a heated brick bed) was still cold. She felt cold all over, and her hunger was even more pronounced.

It was a rainy morning in early spring, and the dampness was unbearable. We had plenty of firewood at home, so we didn't want to make do with it. It was just making things uncomfortable for us.

So the first thing she did after getting out of bed was to light the stove.

Have you decided what to eat yet?

The little girl followed Jian Dan closely, hesitating for a long time before finally making up her mind.

"Let's have some dumpling soup."
