Chapter 270 Awakened by the Scent

What?

Jian Dan choked on his own saliva.

"Xin Xin, don't talk nonsense."

Kid, you probably don't know what kind of place that is, do you? You really dare to say that!

"Why can't we go to his house?"

To put it simply, she didn't even know where he lived, so how could she know if she could go?

"Look, Brother Cheng Chao said he'll be very busy when he gets back, so he must be working, right?"

"yes,"

"That job definitely won't be done at home, right? Besides, he's so busy, you definitely won't have time even if you go."

Don't you think so?

Kids don't have such complicated thought processes; they don't have time to think about it.

"So he won't have time to make me roast chicken anymore?"

He nodded immediately.

"That's for sure. I think he probably doesn't even have time to eat."

A few simple words from the group were enough to make the young girl lose interest.

"Okay, then I'll just wait at home."

Cheng Chao tried to speak several times but couldn't get a word in edgewise, and the two of them made up their minds.

"No, aren't you talking about me? Why didn't you even ask for my opinion?"

Cheng Jin, standing nearby, was suppressing a laugh, and Lin Zhengde's eyes also showed a hint of amusement.

The little girl blinked her big eyes, full of confusion.

"Why should I tell you? Didn't you say you'd come over when you had time? You... are you regretting it?"

As she spoke, she twisted her body to get down, and Cheng Chao, forgetting about arguing, quickly hugged her.

"Haha!" Cheng Jin couldn't help but laugh.

Cheng Chao had no choice.

"You, how can you change your face so suddenly?"

The little girl covered her face and protested, "I didn't change my face, I'm still Xin Xin!"

Lin Zhengde whispered to Cheng Jin,

“This child doesn’t resemble Old Jian at all, that rough and uncultured guy. And he calls me ‘uncle’ so affectionately.”

Cheng Jin,

"This is a little girl, why should she look like him? What would she look like then?"

They joked and laughed, and soon arrived at the foot of the mountain.

Simplely, Lin Dongfang carried the chicken, Li Guang carried the fish, and Cheng Chao and his group carried the still unconscious man, carefully lifting the things.

A large group of soldiers remained in the mountains, digging along that line. Lin Zhengde and the others planned to interrogate them when they returned to see if they could extract any other information, such as where else they had buried besides that line.

Cheng Chao didn't go with them. After watching them walk away, he went straight into the village to find the village chief.

Regardless of the situation, we need to be cautious right now, and we can't go up the mountain anytime soon.

They will set up defenses at the foot of the mountain, but they also need to notify the village to prevent any further accidents.

When they arrived at Jian Dan's door, Lin Dongfang left her two fish. Since the fish weren't caught by her, Jian Dan simply took two chickens as a return gesture. Lin Dongfang didn't stand on ceremony either; even if he didn't eat them, his wife would.

Besides, given their relationship, there's no need to be so formal.

When Li Guang returned to the educated youth settlement, Chen Jing and Gu Jianjun had just finished making do with lunch. Gu Jianjun was still muttering to himself...

"Tell me, this kid disappeared as soon as he went up the mountain, completely forgetting about you."

"Brother Jun, you're talking badly about me behind my back again."

Li Guang was smug.

"See? If I hadn't come back at the right time, I wouldn't have known you were this kind of person, hmph!"

Gu Jianjun quickly put on a smile.

"What are you saying? It's just that when you're not home, nothing tastes good to us."

Hey? What's that smell on you? You smell so good!

After sitting by the fire for so long, I was covered in that smell, and the breeze on the way down the mountain didn't blow it away.

Li Guang put down his basket, and Gu Jianjun screamed as if he had discovered a new continent.

"Where have you been? How did you bring back so many fish?"

Li Guang shook his head and stretched out the pheasant in his hand.

"Hmph, I have even better ones."

Gu Jianjun was stunned, and Chen Jing also sat up straight, his eyes burning with desire.

After being here for several days, this is the first time I've finally seen meat.

Gu Jianjun immediately transformed into a walking encyclopedia of questions.

"Did you catch it? Was it a fish too? Where did you find it? Why didn't you see any when you went up the mountain yesterday?"

Once we entered the village, the few dogs that had been slowly following behind suddenly rushed back. We simply poured them a bowl of dog food and then left them alone.

"Xin Xin, come inside and go to sleep."

It was a little past 1:30 in the afternoon. The sun wasn't too hot, it was quite warm. The little girl nodded repeatedly in the sun. After drinking some water, she sat on the kang (a heated brick bed) and started snoring within two minutes.

The package Cheng Chao brought was left untouched; he simply carried it to the west room and placed it at the end of the kang (heated brick bed), leaving it for the child to unpack herself when she woke up.

It wasn't too tiring. After cleaning the chicken we brought back, we immediately stewed it. We washed some mushrooms we picked that day and put half of them in the stew, while we laid the other half out in a large basket to dry in the yard.

The child loves to eat mushrooms, but Jian Dan doesn't go up the mountain as often these days, and she definitely can't make them herself. She's already planning to ask the villagers to exchange some more.

I'll ask Aunt Liu for help later. It's almost mushroom season, and there are also hazel mushrooms in the fall. I think many villagers would be willing to help.

I stirred the chicken and mushroom stew in the pot, placed a steamer rack on top, and put the rinsed rice on it. This way, when the dish is ready, the rice on top will also be cooked.

It was prepared early and simmered for half the afternoon, so today, what woke Jianxin up was not her sister's voice, but an enticing aroma.

Jian Xin didn't get to eat the roast chicken right away, but she was very satisfied with the fragrant chicken stew with mushrooms. Her little mouth was full of oil, and she soaked rice in the chicken soup, making her little belly round and bulging again.

After cleaning up the kitchen, she simply took the child for a walk in the village. She went to see Aunt Liu, which also served as a way to help the child digest his food.

Tomorrow we'll be going to work, so everyone's having dinner early today. Many families are steaming dry food after dinner, and smoke is rising from every household.

The warmth and comfort of everyday life are what truly soothe the human heart; this is probably the meaning behind it.

Not far into the village, I saw a group of children. I simply bent down and asked one of them...

"Do you want to go and play with them?"

The little girl glanced at it, then resolutely turned her head away.

"No, I want to go find Sister Xiaohua. She's waiting for me to read her a story."

Okay, this child seems to like being a know-it-all, so I won't bother her anymore.

Most of the villagers had finished eating, probably because they were going to work the next day, so not many of them were out and about.

When we passed by the educated youth compound, the kitchen door of Li Yan and the others was open, steaming hot, and we couldn't see their figures clearly.

However, I guess they're also preparing for tomorrow.

It was simple and didn't bother her, but Wei Shujuan, who lived in the room near the door, happened to be washing vegetables by the door. Upon seeing her, she greeted her warmly.

"Jian Zhiqing, have you finished eating?"

A simple nod.

"Yes, we've finished eating. I had something to do, so I came out. Is this your menu for tomorrow?"
