There aren't many entertainment options for kids these days. Besides running around outside, people like Liu Guangming, who have some skills, can make a couple of toys for the kids, but those are just things like toy guns, ice guns, and sleds.
As for the stories, they are all based on real events. They are all stories told by the older generation about the wars of previous years. I have heard them dozens of times since I was a child. The adults would just start to say something and the children could recite it word for word.
The first comic book that Jianxin and Xiaohua read together was Journey to the West.
Putting everything else aside, the various poses of monkeys wielding sticks in the picture captivated the two children, providing them with a lot of motivation to learn characters, since understanding solely from pictures is somewhat lacking.
Tiger was simply attracted by them. As soon as he got home, he saw his sister lying on the kang (a heated brick bed) looking at something so intently. Out of curiosity, he wanted to know.
Upon closer inspection, hey? Interesting.
Doesn't that spark your interest?
The more I watch, the more engrossed I become. Now, I look for Xiaohua as soon as I get home.
After all, he doesn't know many words, so it's still very difficult for him to read on his own.
Because of this, he was ridiculed by Old Man Liu and his wife.
"My brother even said he wanted to learn to read from me."
It's simple, and a little unexpected that it worked so quickly?
"Really? Xiaohua is a little teacher too? That's amazing!"
Here, your older sister will reward you with a piece of candy.
Xiaohua blinked her eyes and couldn't help but smile shyly, carefully putting the reward into her pocket.
Jian Xin leaned over and said something, and the two girls immediately burst into laughter.
I didn't think too much about it.
She's just an ordinary person, not someone particularly noble, and she doesn't have the ability to teach and nurture students.
However, in this environment, people's lives are hard. She always thinks that if her children can learn more now, they will have more skills to rely on in the future and be more able to protect themselves and be independent. At least in this era where the order is not very normal and in this society that is just beginning to develop, they can be upright people.
After a winter's rest, it was the first day back to work, so I needed a break. The tasks assigned to me weren't heavy to begin with, and I simply turned over most of the land in the morning. The afternoon was much easier, and I finished in less than half the afternoon. I called Liu Guoqiang, the scorekeeper, to check and record my work points. I returned the tools and, completely ignoring the envy and jealousy of the villagers and other educated youth behind me, happily headed home.
After lunch, Jian Dan didn't let Xiao Hua go back. The two children were still taking a nap, so Jian Dan just glanced at them and left without disturbing them.
At this time, it wasn't just about working in the fields. The work in the fields and the garden at home followed the same steps, only in a small area. There was no one forcing anyone to do it, and the time was flexible.
The garden in the simple backyard was quite large, and she didn't want to dawdle. She was the only one in the family who could do chores, and sooner or later it would all be her work, which she couldn't avoid. She might as well take advantage of the time she had now and get it done quickly.
Last year, I only grew common vegetables in my garden. After harvesting the second crop of Chinese cabbage in the fall, I hardly ever came to this garden. If you want to talk about hardness, it really can't compare to the hardness of the earth.
Moreover, their own tools were all in good condition; the forks and shovels were new and only used when planting the garden. With this setup, it was naturally much easier and less strenuous to work.
Being at home with the children right under her nose, Jian Dan was in a good mood and did her work with ease. When the two children came out to use the toilet, still half asleep, she saw that Jian Dan had already dug two holes in the backyard.
"You're awake?"
Jian Xin was stunned for a moment, but then happily ran over.
Xiao Hua looked up at the sky, wondering if it was time to finish work yet.
"Sister Jian, weren't you at work? Why are you back so early?"
He simply slammed the fork into the ground, wiped the sweat from his face with his sleeve, and walked over to meet Jian Xin.
"Slow down, don't fall."
Then answer Xiaohua's question.
"I'm at work now, but I can go home once I'm done."
The two children went to the toilet in a daze, and only after washing their hands did they become fully awake.
"Wow, sister, are you digging in the dirt? I'll help too."
Xiao Hua corrected,
"It's not digging, it's turning over the soil. We need to dig out all the soil underground and turn it over."
Jian Xin didn't understand either, but she went to the woodshed to find her little shovel. Seeing that Xiao Hua was still empty-handed and following her, she seemed to want to go too. After circling the woodshed twice, she ran into the house and pulled out the small shovel for sweeping and dusting from the corner of the kitchen wall.
"Sister, here, take this! Come on!"
The two little girls walked out with an air of indifference, as if they didn't recognize anyone.
"Pfft!"
"Woof woof woof!"
"who?"
When the door opened, Cheng Chao was stunned to find himself surrounded by four dogs and two wary little girls. This treatment was a bit too much!
Upon seeing Cheng Chao, all her wariness vanished instantly. Jian Xin tossed aside her small shovel and ran over.
"Brother Cheng Chao, what brings you here?"
Last time I came here, it happened to be when Jian Dan and her friends were going up the mountain. As a result, we met that guy again. We didn't even exchange more than a few words that day, except for delivering the things. Today, since it was my afternoon break, he came over without even changing his clothes.
"Of course I miss Xin Xin,"
With a swift movement of his long arm, he lifted the child and placed her on his shoulder. The little girl was startled; the sudden height and wide open view frightened her, and she clung tightly to Cheng Chao's hair.
Cheng Chao was also jolted awake by the arrest.
"Hey, take it easy, take it easy, are you trying to murder me? Grab my arm, grab my arm, don't grab my hair."
I heard the noise coming from the backyard and saw this lively scene. The little girl was sitting on Cheng Chao's chair, giggling and holding onto Cheng Chao's short hair tightly.
Cheng Chao winced in pain, shouting for her to let go, but his hands remained firmly supporting the little girl's body.
Down below, Xiaohua stared in disbelief as four dogs circled around Cheng Chao, wagging their tails and barking enthusiastically.
Simple's lips twitched, and she forced herself not to laugh. For a moment, she didn't know whether she should come out or take a few steps back to the backyard and wait a while before coming out.
Sitting high up, she could see far, and Jian Xin saw her the moment she came out, excitedly running around.
"Sister, sister, look, it's so tall."
Her little bottom bounced up and down, and her shoulders slipped so hard that Cheng Chao almost lost his grip. Jian Dan quickly stepped forward to stop him.
"Don't run around, you'll fall down."
In just a short while, Cheng Chao was already covered in sweat, and he thought to himself that coaxing children was definitely no easier than their training.
It was a breezy spring afternoon. After playing for a while, Jian Dan quickly ushered the group inside.
"Alright, go inside and have some water to cool down, then come out and play again later."
