Chapter 292 The Vegetable Garden is Taking Shape

That's great, we've found them work, they're busy now, and their homes are lively again.

After chattering and discussing for a while, watermelon was the first thing they decided on. After all, Jian Xin hadn't had enough watermelon from last year. Hu Zi and Hei Dan had a few bites and were also very craving it, thinking about it constantly. The other children just listened to them talking about it, their mouths watering.

They hesitated about what to plant next, and as for growing succulents, Jian Xin had already realized that was impossible.

Liujiatun is quite large, and Liu Sanye's family is considered to be relatively well-off. Even so, Huzi can't eat his fill every day; they currently eat porridge and wild vegetables.

Hei Dan was in a similar situation. After all, Liu Weimin was the village chief, not to mention the other children, who ate wild vegetables as their staple food.

Their biggest concern was how to fill their stomachs, but no family could simply give up their best land for their children to exploit; they all wished they could plant crops on every inch of land.

"How about we plant sweet potatoes? I'll go back and ask my grandma for a few, then we can roast them and eat them, okay?"

The moment food is mentioned, everyone's mouths water; they're all starving.

Basically, it was a few older kids discussing it, while the younger kids were just there for the fun of it and watched. In the future, it will probably just be Tiger and his friends' business.

"Okay, potatoes are fine too, roasted potatoes are delicious too."

"Okay,"

Tiger decisively made his decision.

"Xinxin has watermelon seeds, so let's plant potatoes and sweet potatoes. I'll go home and get some sweet potatoes from my grandma."

Another older child, named Stone, said in a clear voice,

"I'm going home to get some potatoes, but do you guys know how to plant them? Tiger, do you know how?"

At times like these, you can't rely on the kids; it's good enough if they don't cause trouble.

Tiger couldn't help but glance at Jian Dan, who then turned her gaze away and looked up at the sky, clearly indicating that she was not going to do anything about it.

He thought to himself, "If I were to take over, what chance would you guys have?"

Jian Xin stood with her hands on her hips, looking exasperated.

"You guys are really, really stupid!"

"If you don't know, just ask! Brother Tiger doesn't know, Brother Stone doesn't know, but Grandma Third knows. If you still don't know, go ask an adult."

The little girl was so anxious she kept stamping her feet.

"How can you be so stupid? We're just kids! How can kids know everything?"

Jian Dan watched the commotion from the sidelines, laughing so hard his shoulders slumped. He covered his mouth, not daring to make a sound, for fear of upsetting the little girl.

Tiger scratched his head. He'd been mischievous since childhood, rarely doing anything productive, and was often beaten. He still had a lingering fear of his grandmother, always feeling that mentioning her would just get him a beating. He suddenly felt a pang of fear.

"Huh? You want to ask about my grandma?"

"You! Humph!" The little girl lifted her leg and walked away, stubbornly.

"If you're not going, I will, but you can't eat it then!"

Tiger and the others quickly followed.

"Xin Xin, Xin Xin, I'll go ask. I'll go home and ask my grandma, okay? Don't run away."

Simple laughed until tears streamed down her face. She never expected that this child would have the older children completely under his thumb.

Since that's what they said, Jian Dan naturally thought the same way. To prove he was serious, he even dug a ditch with a shovel and made a short fence with some branches, clearly separating the lent land so that anyone coming in could see it was independent.

Since she had nothing else to do, she simply took the watermelon seeds and started planting them right away. These few rows would be quick, and she would be done in no time.

After a while, just as she took out the bean seeds, the group of children came back in a flurry. Before they even entered the house, from this angle, Tiger and Stone were both holding dark-colored things in their hands, and they were slowly following behind the old lady.

Set the bean seeds aside and take a quick walk.

"Third mistress, why did you come here?"

The old lady smiled so broadly her face was full of wrinkles.

"They didn't explain it clearly either. They went back to ask for sweet potatoes and potatoes, saying something like, 'Let them grow their own. I came along to take a look.'"

Jian Dan couldn't help but laugh again, coughed a few times, and stood in the yard with the old lady, looking at the back garden.

"There are only two of us, we can't possibly eat all that we grow."

Xin Xin said that these children's stomachs are rumbling and they are hungry every day. I thought to myself, why not just let them do what they want? Anyway, there's no danger.

Kids need to eat more or less, right? It's good that we grow it ourselves, so they'll feel more comfortable eating it.

What do you think?

The old lady remained silent for a long time.

"You're really willing to let the kids squander such a big piece of land."

In other people's homes, they'd probably plant corn and sorghum; everyone wants to harvest more grain.

“Look, I work and I get decent mileage. Plus, as you know, Xin Xin’s uncle is also subsidizing us. He always sends things here, and sometimes when we go up the mountain, we can get some things. There are just the two of us, so it’s enough for us to eat.”

This garden is so big, and when the west wing was built, it was expanded even more. You know I'm lazy; last year, Xiong Huzi and Xiao Hua helped me collect those things.

I've planted everything I could, so a little more won't make a difference.

Look at this,”

The older kids were already making plans in their new territory, their hopes barely concealed.

"The children are all happy. No matter how much we can earn, it's good to give them something to look forward to."

There was only one piece, and they divided it among several people; it wasn't much more, and it wasn't tiring at all.

Jian Dan was a little worried that the old lady would feel sorry for the child, but that was clearly not the case.

The old lady scoffed.

"They still know what tiredness is? If they used half of the energy they have for going out and having fun all day, that would be enough."

A simple chuckle.

"Just don't feel sorry for the child later."

“Rural children aren’t that delicate. This Shitou has been running around with Huzi and finding his own food since he was four or five years old. This little bit of work is nothing to him.”

Sigh, in the countryside, people rely on these crops to make a living, and every family wants to divide one piece of land into two.

"Only you spoil these kids so much."

That's not entirely true; she is indeed lazy and doesn't want the effort to plant so many.

"I heard something about watermelons. What's up? Are you going to grow watermelons?"

A simple sigh.

"It's all because of my little glutton. Last year, I casually planted a few plants, and she ate them all. This year, she specifically asked me to plant some. I just planted this row, and she wants to plant some herself."

I said that whatever amount they collect is theirs to decide, and I won't interfere.

He was so happy, he asked me several times before he believed me, as if he was afraid I would change my mind and not give it to them later.

"Okay, that's thoughtful of you."

"Anyone they don't know how to do can ask me. Farming? There's nothing this old lady doesn't know."

"Haha, isn't that right? Just now..."

The children were having so much fun that they kept pestering the old lady with questions, while Jian Dan ignored them completely.

It was right after lunch. A flurry of activity ensued as the older children followed the steps to cut sweet potatoes and potatoes, while the younger children helped Jian Xin scatter watermelon seeds. They worked for half the afternoon, and before nightfall, the small vegetable garden was already basically complete.
