Cheng Zhuo immediately slapped him.
"Get back up, or you'll fall down again!"
He strode over, looked down using his flashlight, paused for a moment, and then burst out laughing.
"Haha, that's true, it's fortunate that so many people came."
Xiao An, bring me that rope, and that basket too.
Simple couldn't squeeze through, but judging from the context, there must be something else.
"Brother, is there anything else?"
Cheng Chao countered with a question,
"Did you only release one fawn back then?"
"Yes, it was injured when I saw it. I was in a hurry to go downstairs to find someone, so I threw it in. What happened? It wasn't completely dead, so it escaped?"
"No, but you probably won't be able to get any venison."
Cheng Rui got anxious first.
"Huh? There's no more meat, brother?"
Cheng An rolled his eyes. His brother was so impatient; he wouldn't listen to everything he was told.
Cheng Chao continued slowly,
"However, we can eat our fill of other types of meat,"
After saying that, he rolled up his sleeves and jumped down, caught the rope that Cheng Zhuo threw down, and soon tied something to it so that Cheng Zhuo could pull him up.
The sun had already set, and now they were using only the light from flashlights. Cheng An, holding the flashlight, could see clearly.
"Wow, it's a cow! Dad, it's a cow, right? Its horns are so big!"
Cheng Zhuo was untying the rope.
"Yes, it's yak. The meat is delicious."
As darkness fell, Cheng Chao moved quickly, and soon all three sizable prey were brought up. Finally, Cheng Chao threw up two more long-tailed pheasants, which were much prettier than the ones he had simply caught, with bright colors and sheen in their feathers.
Jian Dan was also taken aback for a moment.
"So many? Did that little deer attract them all?"
Cheng Chao climbed up the edge of the trap,
"Yes, the fawn was left with only a few scraps of meat and bones, so it wasn't a complete sacrifice; it was a trade of one for three."
As darkness fell, the deep mountains became eerily silent. Cheng Zhuo urged them on.
"Hurry up, stop joking around, or we won't get home until midnight."
Lying side by side on the grass were a yak, a deer (though much larger than the one from yesterday), and a donkey, which was the least injured and still alive, humming softly.
I've looked at it several times, and I'm still having doubts.
"Second Uncle, is that a donkey? There are such things in the deep mountains?"
Cheng Zhuo also laughed,
"I never expected to actually run into one of these. It's a donkey, a breed from the mountains. They're easy to raise; they can survive on grass. And these things are incredibly fast. The last time I caught one was more than ten years ago."
Cheng Rui, being bold, reached out and poked at Gu.
"Dad, is donkey meat delicious?"
Cheng Zhuo kicked him without hesitation.
"If you dawdle any longer, I'll leave you here to feed it."
Originally, they only intended for Jian Dan to lead the way, but now, looking at this row of prey, Cheng Zhuo is in a dilemma. These three are all quite large, and although he is strong, he can only take down one of them.
Cheng Chao chuckled.
"Second Uncle, stop worrying about it. Sister, it's time for you to show your strength."
Simply and directly confront her with a single blow. What nonsense! What strength? Is this how you describe a girl?
"Second Uncle, I'm very strong, let's each take one of the three of us,"
As she spoke, she picked out the cleanest deer. Since it was dead, she felt no guilt about dragging it along.
They tossed two pheasants into a basket, which Cheng Rui carried on his back, while Cheng An led the way with flashlights.
Cheng Chao pulled the yak and followed behind.
The donkey, though alive, had broken a leg and couldn't walk, nor could it be dragged along. This problem was left to the only caretaker.
While going uphill, we could still see the moonlight, but going downhill required relying entirely on flashlights. There wasn't much moonlight, but that didn't affect our speed; in fact, the group actually went downhill much faster.
There were many people around, and they kept talking, so they didn't feel scared. But once they were out of the mountains and on flat ground, the two children breathed a sigh of relief.
Are you tired?
"Son, give me that basket."
Cheng Zhuo still felt sorry for his own son, and he had done quite a bit of exercise that night, going up and down the mountain.
Cheng Rui gripped the suspenders and dodged.
"No need, I can carry it. It's just that I heard some kind of whooshing sound just now, and it scared me a little. Could it be a wolf?"
As they walked, they kept looking back, as if it were right behind them.
"That was just the sound of the wind blowing through the trees. It's nothing to worry about. Don't scare yourself. We've all come down now, and we'll be home soon."
"Um,"
The thought that it was his sister who discovered it made Cheng Rui puff out his chest again.
"Sis, you're amazing! You dared to go so far. Aren't you scared? What if you ran into wolves?"
Simply dragged the deer along without much effort. Cheng Zhuo, watching from behind, couldn't help but twitch his lips. He glanced at Cheng Chao beside him...
"That's quite strong. You're the older brother, aren't you? You've been outdone."
Cheng Chao didn't stand on ceremony either.
"You're supposed to be an uncle, yet you're not much better off?"
Once inside the residential compound, the group deliberately chose secluded spots. Although they might not run into anyone at this hour, there was no need to cause trouble in the middle of the night.
Tang Sumei was anxiously waiting at home, but she dared not make a sound or sleep. Upon hearing the noise, she rushed over to open the door.
"Why are you only getting back now? Hurry up, the water's already boiled."
Seeing that none of them were empty-handed, Tang Sumei was shocked. She followed behind, closing the door behind her, and went inside before daring to speak loudly.
"Didn't you say there was only one fawn? How come you brought back so many? Did you go hunting?"
