Recognizing the voice as that of village chief Liu Weimin, he quickly raised his voice in response.
"Uncle Village Chief, it's me, Jian Dan, and a few comrades at the foot of the mountain."
Liu Weimin paused for a moment, then quickly walked forward, shining his flashlight up, down, left, and right.
"What's going on? I think I just heard gunshots. What's happening? Are there bad guys?"
The wild boar was behind the group. The faint beam of the flashlight suddenly shone on the pool of blood on the ground, making it appear dark and indistinct. Liu Weimin was startled.
Ouch!
Behind them were Liu Weimin's son, Liu Jianshe, and several villagers who lived nearby. Hearing the noise, they all gathered around.
The people in front also stepped back a few paces to the side, clearing the battlefield.
First of all, Liu Weimin himself was so frightened that he screamed.
"What...what is this?"
The blurry shadows were so indistinct that it was impossible to tell what they were. All that could be seen were piles of things, and even from a distance, one could feel the warmth of their blood.
Some of the bolder ones slowly moved closer, almost pressing their bodies against the flesh, before finally daring to confirm.
"My God, it's a wild boar!"
"Village chief, it's a wild boar!"
I was startled for a second, then I realized it was dead, it was flesh.
Without anyone saying anything, she excitedly got up and ran to look at the few small black bags not far away. She was so excited she almost jumped up.
"Village chief, five...five wild boars!"
Liu Weimin, disregarding his fear, rushed over. The shock of what he heard and what he saw was completely different.
"This is... a wild boar coming down from the mountain? Captain Lin, you've run into one?"
The leader on the other side nodded.
“We were on a routine patrol when they came down the mountain. However, we only managed to stop four of them. This one was one that slipped through the net and was killed by this woman with a single blow.”
He himself was a little speechless. Even those of them who had received professional training might not have the arm strength to kill with one blow. Judging from the woman's appearance, she didn't seem to have exerted much effort, which was quite a blow to him.
Upon hearing this, Liu Weimin was somewhat surprised, but not too much, having witnessed Jian Dan's immense strength before. He simply pointed at her angrily.
"What are you doing out here so late at night instead of sleeping? There are so many adults here, why would we need a child like you?"
Knowing he meant well, I simply smiled and said nothing.
"Captain Lin, what are your plans for dealing with these wild boars?"
Although it was their village's territory, this thing came down the mountain to wreak havoc on people and crops. After all, it saved the whole village. Oh, and this young educated youth, Jian, became the village's savior.
Captain Lin was an upright and incorruptible soldier, the kind of person who would never take a needle or thread from the people—a man of integrity and honesty.
"Village Chief Liu, these are your village's spoils of war, we don't want them."
This encounter was purely coincidental. We are a nearby garrison, and it's part of our duty. Don't overthink it."
Troops stationed here!
Simple and natural, she and Liu Weimin exchanged a glance. Although it was so dark they couldn't see anything clearly, they miraculously understood each other's meaning.
"Village chief, to be honest, I was the one who attacked this one, but the ones over there were all thanks to these comrades."
Liu Weimin naturally took it.
"Oh dear, Captain Lin, look, aren't you making me make a mistake? Aren't you trying to make me have a reputation for getting something for nothing?"
Captain Lin was taken aback. "Really?"
Looking back at his teammates, although they didn't show any obvious expressions, their eyes were clearly telling.
Those who eat the government's food are the most envied by ordinary people, but in these difficult years, even for them, eating meat is an extremely luxurious thing.
Several people were staring at him expectantly. Liu Weimin noticed this and seized the opportunity to speak.
"Captain Lin, although you all killed them together, this one was the work of a young educated youth from our village, while the others were yours. So you should take them away and deal with them."
Hey, you guys come over here and carry this thing to the village office. We'll distribute the meat tomorrow.
"Captain Lin, you should quickly call some people to remove this. Have them come back later to clean up the bloodstains."
After much deliberation, Captain Lin concluded that this was not taking advantage of the people, and finally agreed to give each family half. He had someone come and take away the two larger animals, leaving the three smaller ones for the villagers.
Although he felt embarrassed, Liu Weimin was overjoyed to have gained so much extra meat. After carrying the three pigs back, Liu Jianshe brought people back to clean up the bloodstains. This whole ordeal lasted until the early hours of the morning, when it was almost dawn.
The men working there got excited when they saw the meat and were no longer sleepy.
With all this commotion, most of the village was awakened by the noise. Liu Weimin thought, "Who can sleep now?" So he decided, "Let's all just kill them!"
The two groups separated, and after a quick trip home, they went straight to the base. She was sprayed with pig's blood in the middle of the night, and it was already quite an achievement that she had endured it until now; she had to wash herself clean.
By daybreak, the news had spread throughout the entire village, and the village was as excited as if it were New Year's Day, with everyone spreading the news and celebrating with great joy.
Over there, as dawn broke, Captain Lin arranged for people to guard the foot of the mountain, while he himself followed the two large pigs back to the camp.
Although they were stationed here, they couldn't just go up the mountain to hunt whenever they wanted, and meat was a very rare and precious commodity.
The arrival of these two pigs caused a sensation; they were almost instantly surrounded. Chef Zhang, having heard the news, rushed out with a large ladle.
"Where's the pig? Let me see, let me see!"
God knows, he was so worried. These young men were at the age where they could eat a lot, and each of them could easily eat three bowls of rice and soup in one meal.
But with that meager amount of grain allocated to him, he tried every possible way to produce more, but could he possibly grow any more grain? It was just that much; no matter how much he worried, it wouldn't increase.
The porridge was so thin it was almost unbearable; even after drinking several large bowls, it would only keep you full for a short while.
He was cooking porridge in the kitchen, thinking about whether to add some bran to the porridge for dinner, or to send them up the mountain again to hunt a few pheasants or rabbits, chop them up, and cook a big pot of porridge. That way, it would have a meaty flavor and some oil!
Upon hearing someone shouting "pig" outside, without even understanding what was happening, he grabbed a spoon and rushed out.
"Where is the pig? Where is it?"
A group of young men stared intently at the car that had just arrived, completely oblivious to what was being said outside. They were already pushing themselves to the limit, having just finished their morning practice, and now, seeing this enormous wild boar, their stomachs were rumbling.
Mr. Zhang called out several times but no one paid him any attention, so he waved his long-handled ladle and pushed his way into the crowd.
"Let me see, let me see, is it meat? Ah? Is it whole pieces of meat?"
Even as I squeezed my way closer, I was startled by the two large wild boars and froze, it took me a long time to find my voice.
Am I seeing things? Or am I dreaming?
